Before I get started, if there's already a thread like this, go ahead and lock it, but I couldn't find one digging back a few pages (just one asking about what games you beat in 2013 in particular). Also go ahead and lock if you think this is too similar to the What Are YOU Currently Playing thread (although I think this is a little different, I have no problem with the mods deciding otherwise). With that out of the way: Just finished up Kirby & the Amazing Mirror for the first time! Positives: It's pretty much "Metroid-Kirby", which is actually pretty awesome once you get used to it. They really adapted that style of gameplay to Kirby quite well. Now, you don't acquire upgrades to solve puzzles & defeat enemies like in Metroid , rather whenever you come across an obstacle, you think about whether there were any enemies in nearby rooms that could give you an ability suited to it. This works in it's favor quite well too, as it allows it to be more open than more recent Metroid games. Like any good "Metroidvania", there's still plenty of things to look out for though (instead of being key to progression, the items you find here are mostly optional stuff, like spraycans that you can use to change Kirby's color, Sound Test music sheets, and optional health upgrades). This is like one of the most non-linear games I've played in a long time, if ever (remember, this is a freakin' Kirby game!). While the 9 "Areas" are numbered, and the difficulty is higher in the higher numbered areas, you're free to explore & complete them in any order you wish. It's actually a tad more difficult than the average Kirby game, which is nice. It isn't at Mega Man or DKC levels of difficulty of course, but the bump in challenge is noticeable compared to other entries. There's a nice mix of new & returning bosses (the boss of Area 5 is my personal favorite). While the connected world may not meld together as organically as Super Metroid's does, the world on offer here is still colorful as you'd expect, and all the tropes are present (grasslands, haunted mansion, caves, mountain/fire, castle, water, ice/snow, ruins, and sky/space). Negatives: Unfortunately, maps are seen as an optional item here (a big no-no as far as "Metroidvanias" go, IMO), and all the area maps are hidden away as optional items to find & collect, some hidden behind some devious puzzles. To compound this further, while rooms you explore are highlighted even before finding the official map, it's very barebones & not much help. While not a deal breaker, this did noticeably damper the experience for me. It's a bit on the backtracky side. This should come to no surprise given the genre, but I feel it's a little more prevalent here than in other examples of the genre, and the map issues make it slightly more irritating as well. @Nintoz oh wow, maybe it’s a good thing you didn’t go for the extra semester then.

Fair point about Mementos. I thought you could chip away at it throughout the game to alleviate the grind at the end, but I may be misremembering. Unfortunately the end-game grind is a genre trope that I’m not totally on board with either. Too many JRPGs wear you down at the very end.

Great to hear you still find it to be a 10/10 though. Hope the post-Persona depression doesn’t hit too hard!

Just beat Dark Souls 2 again. This time was surprisingly easy. Just get the starting Rapier, upgrade it to +10 and kill everything.

Unlike my first time, now I beat Vendrick and Aldia!

Amazing game and it is so different from DS1 and DS3, and in my opinion unfairly criticized

Shame we did not get it on the Switch 1!

@Zuljaras I played DS2 for the first time only recently, my buddy gave me his old xb360 copy. I got to the giant flame demon in the lava castle area, and was just like, nope this game is impossible lol.

Beyond the Ice Palace 2. Never played the original but I rather enjoyed this sequel. Loved the pixel art, the developers were really channeling 90s Capcom, particularly Demon's Crest, and the snes Aladdin.

@OldManHermit All Souls games seem impossible and if you managed to get to the Old Iron King why stopped?! You got through so much already!

Also the Scholar of the First Sin edition (the PS4 one) is the one to play!

Such a great collection of games. I've beaten over 30 of them now. Still got a lot more to play.

I highly recommend you play Hot Foot and Caramel Caramel co-op instead of single-player as well. They're much easier and a lot more fun that way.

Harvest Moon (Super Nintendo)
I had a great and relaxing time. The ending scenes were funny and cute. At the end I was told, that I earned 739 points and, that I can become the best. I hope this means, that I did good enough.

@Zuljaras haha, it was just one of those moments where the challenge seems so insurmountable, it becomes completely demoralizing. I'm certainly no stranger to the souls series tho, I beat the first one, and Bloodborne is my personal favorite. I'll probably give another go at it, but DS2 seems particularly challenging in a series know for it's difficulty.

@OldManHermit Its challenge comes from new mechanics that are not in the other games.

The most frustrating for me is that every time you die your health pool becomes smaller as the curse progresses.

The adaptability stat is also unnecessary.

Just beat Outer Wilds. (The true ending, I believe.) Absolutely beautiful game. I'm genuinely awestruck by the ending.
