There were only 2 power ups if I recall correctly? Even 3 has the Super Leaf, the Tanooki Suit, the Magic Wing, the Frog Suit, the Hammer Suit, and the Goomba's Shoe.
SMB3 had a lot of power-ups. That said, the Yoshis are effectively 4 different power-ups in SMW although 2 of them overlap cape and fire flower.
Well I finally beat SMW for the first time. While I thought it was a great 2d mario, I have to say it doesn't hold a candle to 3 or even wonder. The requirement to find secret exits in one of the world's was kind of frustrating if I'm being honest. There were only 2 power ups if I recall correctly? Even 3 has the Super Leaf, the Tanooki Suit, the Magic Wing, the Frog Suit, the Hammer Suit, and the Goomba's Shoe. The world's were much more varied and alive in 3 compared to world. Still a great game though. Just not in my top 3 mario games. Please hold your pitchforks 🫠
I agree with you 100%. I feel the same way with SMW compared to 3. While yes SMW is one of my favorite SNES games it's not my favorite Mario game. 3 topped it in so many ways. I have yet to play Wonder but I was told I am not allowed to buy it for now.

@NintendoByNature I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not quite as in love with SMW compared to the other games. I do think it's still a great game, but a lot of people reference it as the best 2D Mario game, which just doesn't quite seem right to me. It's also not even in my top 3. Top 5 for sure, again, it's a great game. But for the reasons you mentioned, not my favorite either.

@StarPoint yep, fully agree. It's almost everyone's #1, I'm not sure why. Wonder is genuinely the best 2d mario I've played since 3. And I'd even go as far as to say I enjoy the new games better, actually. Especially the wii title. I'd probably go..
To me, Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 are VERY close, but I have to go with SMW as my favorite 2D game to date. Though what I've played of Super Mario Bros. Wonder so far (on the third world now) makes it a worthy contender. Some of this may be nostalgia, but I prefer the graphics, Yoshi's utility, and the Super Cape is one of my favorite power-ups ever.
@StarPoint Funnily enough, I tried buying both the original and N3DS versions of XC1 once I was capable, but by then the prices were very inflated. I was frustrated at the time, but in hindsight it worked out so much better for my first experience of the game to be the Definitive Edition.
Oof...Poppi's initial introduction was clearly fan service, which for me does nothing and at the very least elicits an eye roll or two. What stinks is that she's quite a useful character, but they placed upgrading her behind an arbitrary game within a game that I couldn't be bothered with for long. I'm normally not a cutscene skipper unless I've been through a game several times, but I wouldn't be against bending my preferences when it comes to XC2. All told, it's a decent albeit flawed game that I do intend to keep.

@StarPoint@NintendoByNature@Tyranexx Chiming in here to say I've always found SMW to be the weakest of the 2D Mario games personally (outside of the original/Lost Levels of course but those are the first ones so I can excuse them a bit). I've always enjoyed the graphical style, spritework and enemies (it's the game that introduced Galoombas, nuff said) but the physics/movement have always murdered my enjoyment of it every time I try to give it a go; Mario feels like he has absolutely zero traction, making seemingly basic platforming feel so much worse than it should, and the Cape Feather, what many people laud as one of the best aspects of SMW, is probably my most loathed power-up in the series because good lord: HOW DOES ANYONE CONTROL THIS.
I'm going to be giving Mario Advance 2 a go later on this month so maybe I'll ease up on SMW as a result but for right now? Yeah it's definitely one of my least favourite 2D Marios (and Mario games in general honestly) and I wish I saw what so many others do in it.
As for my favourite however, it's a close one between SMB3 and NSMB as I think both of them are pretty much classic 2D Mario refined to an absolute sheen but I think 3 barely gets the edge for it's distinct visual style compared to other games in the series, excellent headlining power-up in the Tanooki Leaf and insanely creative and inventive level design compared to pretty much all of it's peers from around the same timeframe that still holds up incredibly well today.
of course Yoshi's Island is better than all of them but I don't know whether that really counts as a '2D Mario' game or not XD
@Fizza Yeah, I've always thought the controls felt really weird. Can't quite put my finger on why exactly, but there's just a lack of momentum to movements.

Practice. Seriously, I don't know how much time I've spent in Donut Plains 1 over the years messing around with that power-up. I do agree the controls could be more intuitive though. I do wonder if some of it is the SNES controller since I can make the same argument for Super Metroid despite it being tied with Dread as my favorite 2D entry.
I actually never beat either SMB3 or SMW as a kid; the difficulty curves, limited lives, and cousins overwriting my saves (My aunt and uncle owned that SNES; they babysat me often) made sure of that. I finally beat both through the Virtual Console a few years ago. I will say to SMB3's credit that I do prefer the castle structure and progression more. Not to mention the final boss fight is slightly harder. Though both are easy.
Really though, it's hard to go wrong with most 2D Mario entries outside of the NSMB titles past the first one (Not that they're bad by any means, just generic and not innovative at all IMO) and The Lost Levels unless one is a masochist.
I made the genius move not to spoil myself at all, and in typical Fire Emblem fashion, I ended up inadvertently neglecting to recruit Lindon (and so late in the game too...). I think I accidentally skipped Gaius in Awakening, and in my Birthright play-through, I think I missed Rhajat by S-ranking a unit that couldn't have children besides Morgan.
I've since cut my losses and yesterday, I finally A-ranked everybody so I can skip most of the support conversations in my next play-through, which will most likely be Casual+Hard. Ugh. What a drag. But I suppose it's a convenient excuse to replay the game.
My physical copy of Good Pizza, Great Pizza also arrived earlier this week (over a year after placing my order with LRG!), and I was hopelessly addicted to this otherwise very simple game. I'm not sure if there's an ending (and/or credits sequence), but I think I've unlocked all of the toppings (and upgrades). I'll need to play some more to unlock absolutely everything though.
I've also completed MK8D's DLC (if that counts) and unlocked everything in WarioWare: Move It, minus the poses, which I intend to get around to soon.
Porygon did nothing wrong.

@Tyranexx Super Mario World is also my favorite of the two. Not just for the things you've mentioned, but I also like how Mario controls in that game. It's a bit hard to explain on my end, but if I were to describe his controls/physics, it would be... more "free," I guess you could say. Plus you could throw objects upward. Super Mario Bros. 3's controls, while they're definitely good and serviceable, feel a bit stiff in comparison. Perhaps it's just me, and I've played SMW for many years at this point. I also think that the vast majority of SMW's levels last just right. While I do love SMB3, the one thing I'm not too crazy about is that the game's levels are generally kind of short. I also like SMW's music just a little more.
Both are excellent games and they both have their own strengths, but yeah, I like SMW a tad more.

Bought and beat Prison City all in one day. Its only a few hours ago, but I couldn't put it. I did play on easy, but make no mistake, some sections are tough even on easy. And a few of the bosses towards the end took a number of tries. Reminds me of the old days 🙂. Highly recommend it to nes/snes lovers.
@Vortexeo No joke: I think the only way I got through this one was by constantly saying 'Castlevania III is next, Castlevania III is next, Castlevania III is next' over and over again XD

@MarioLover92 Funny you mention throwing objects upward; I knew this but neglected to mention it since it was many years before I learned it could be done! XD Both SMW and SMB3 control a bit differently, so at this point I'd say it's up to one's preferences. I do agree on many of the level lengths in SMB3. When I revisited the game after many years, I was surprised that they were shorter than I remembered. The game is still fun to play through though; I enjoyed "revisiting" it through Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 on the Wii U VC a few months ago. I nabbed the game right before the eShop shutdown.

@Tyranexx Ah yeah I agree for sure, even with SMB3's levels being a bit short, it's still an awesome game. It's a more challenging game too, especially near the end... I still remember that last airship level in world 8. That level really put up a good fight.
