According to metacritic, gaming site Gamekult's reviewing history is as follows: 549 reviews. 4% is higher than average reviewer's score, 1% the same, 95%(!) of their reviews is lower than average reviewers score. Their score are averagely 15.7 points lower than others. So, because of Gamekult, no game will ever surpass OOT in metacritic. If you look at different games reviews, Gamekult has it's scores almost always at the bottom of the list. What i mean is that shouldn't metacritic ditch GK, since they clearly have completely different reviewing policy than others? They have never given any game a full score. Any thoughts?
For the record, they gave games like Portal 2 and Mass Effect 2 a score: 7/10. That just can't be right considering the metascore of these games. At least they were "generous" enough to give Xenoblade 8/10 (which is also too low IMO).
Reviewers are there to give their opinions, and maybe Gamekult's are reviewers are just harder to please than others.
The Internet's done for if websites that have their own scoring policies are struck from a list of notable reviewers, which is primarily what Metacritic is, really.
To be fair, they do give the impression that they're in it just to cause a stir. I mean, looking at their review history, they've never given out a single review score which is higher than 9/10. Out of 621 games reviewed. When you've scored that many games and there is a number on your 10-point scale that has not yet been used, there is definitely a problem here.

They probably view 10/10 as being a "perfect game", and there's no such thing as a perfect game. Everyone has different opinions and tastes.

I think perfect scores are given a little too freely by a lot of websites, but if they've reviewed 621 games and haven't handed out a single one you have to ask yourself just how big that stick up their a** is.

I find that mentality absurd and wrongheaded. Reviewers should not think their scores so loftily meaningful that a perfect score from them implies a perfect game. If you have a 10 point rating scale, then 10/10 indicates a game of the highest calibre. The concept of the highest score being reserved for an impossibility, a 'perfect game', throws out the entire concept of score-based ratings. A 10/10 may as well be infinity then — an undefined amount that can never be reached.
You think Gamespot overrate games? I've only seen them do that with 360/PS3 games. They've underrated many games on Nintendo consoles but do sometimes give games on Nintendo consoles scores they deserve. Its nowhere near as bad as IGN though.
So, all you people criticizing Gamekult, I take it you all understand French fluently? Because I don't need to tell you how silly it is to judge a review based on its score alone, do i?

Plenty of people judge games just on their review scores. I don't pay attention to reviews, I play the game myself to see if I like it.

Plenty of people are stupid. We know that. That doesn't make being stupid acceptable.

But he is right. Plenty of people (like me and my brother) look at the score over the full review. Better yet we watch IGN's video reviews which are very neat, by the way. That doesn't make us stupid. But, like him, I will read the review if I'm not so sure about the game. I wont if it's a Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear, or Animal Crossing game hence the fact I know what I'm getting myself into. Okay I might read the conclusion but still.

That's besides the point! I am not offering any opinion about the quality of their reviews. I just believe they are abusing the score system (and their spot on industry standard Metacritic) by arbitrarily ignoring the "10" in their 10 point review scale — the same scale that Metacritic uses. If they aren't going to dole out 10s, even when deserved, then perhaps they should officially switch to a 9 point scale. That would even the playing field.
unfortunately review scores by themselves actually makes a bigger difference to all involved (wish this wasn't true) so yeah, this is a still a problem Mr. Journalist. I don't think Gamekult is at fault for that but The_Fox is right so screw them.

They're trolling for traffic. It's easy to do. Give a popular, good game 6/10, and you piss off everyone, but of course, like watching a car accident, everyone looks anyway, so you get the click. And on top of that, you end up with a cult of regular readers who "appreciate" how "awesome honest" you're being. Win-win for websites with limited integrity.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't read the review first before dismissing the website. For all we know they're writing incredible reviews, and trolling with the end score. It happens.
The real problem is that Metacritic is pretty crap in screening the websites it includes in its matrixes. As long as you get good traffic (so, trolling) Metacritic is likely to let you in, at least for one "period" (they reassess who should be on the list every 6 months or so).

Yeah, I realise this. The problem is that everyone these days can set up a blog and claim to be a journalist, without any actual qualifications (or, you know, lessons in ethics). And the bigger problem is that Metacritic exists and people give that average review score legitimacy.
The biggest problem, though, is the lazy-ass gamers who can't be arsed reading a review before getting all crybaby over its score. Because apparently some people haven't clued into the fact that websites troll for traffic, and the content of the review gives the score context even if they're not.
Seriously. It's like getting all disappointed over War and Peace because you flipped to the back page and read the last few words. Worse, in this case, it's like getting pissed off at the book after flipping to the back page, reading the last few words in Russian and not even understanding Russian.
