There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
my favourite zelda game tends to be whichever one I am playing at the time.
this is true of me as well, also, I must say that, while Majora's Mask is my favourite overall Zelda game (with Wind Waker as a VERY close second), my favourite handheld Zelda game is Minish cap (I tend to judge console and handheld Zelda games separately, since their design and feel are often quite different)
A Link to the past - This was where the series completely exploded and became what we know today. It had every single element that makes a Zelda game a Zelda game, while executing them flawlessly. Excellent game design, lots of replay value, a huge ammount of game time. The excitement upon entering each dungeon and hearing those beautifully-crafted tunes wich would ( after a few minutes or so ) make our skin creep =P. The difficulty was just right, and there is so much to do in the game.
Not to mention that it definitly set the tone for future Zelda Masterpieces like Ocarina Of Time.
One More Choice: THE ORACLE GAMES!!! YES!!! Alot of people seem to have ignored these 2 marvelous titles, and i have no idea why. They're just as amazing as Link to The Past and OoT. Same description for ALTTP. Genious game design. The visuals are crisp and colorful. 8 Dungeons and alot of additional content. Not mention that they both link up with eachother for an extended part of the story. New and original items, enemies, puzzles.
A Link to the Past. The series' defining game that introduced most of the reoccurring design/gameplay concepts, themes, and plot elements, while executing it all near-flawlessly.
That's a hard one. Ocarina is very engaging and the world is well-realized in terms of the emotional impact felt upon first seeing destitute Hyrule 7 years later, but the graphics are dated (even the 3D version's) and the environments are too empty.
Wind Waker has a timeless visual style, loads of charm, and a fantastic sense of adventure about it, but the ocean is a pain and it's not the most dramatic Zelda game, story- and imagery-wise. It's just too lighthearted to be that epic feeling.
Skyward Sword has amazing pacing, a brilliant universe to explore, and some of the most dynamic and fun gameplay in the series, but the controls are hit-or-miss for me and some locations and mechanics are ridiculously frustrating.
Tight race between these three, and I haven't even beaten any of them yet!
