I've seen it before, referenced many times, I've herd it mentioned and discussed but I have never played it. I went over to Amazon to check it out but I am confused as a monkey's uncle. Can anyway show me to a starting place, maybe discuss how it's played. Little run down. I have friends who would be interested in playing. Though I have nowhere to start or what all these kits are.

Well I have recently been reading a book on John carmack and John Romero and how they got their ideas off stuff they did like diakatana, quake, and even doom. I haven't played it myself but I was asking a friend about it and he just started gushing about it. Maybe I should give it a whirl.

Same here. I was thinking of getting a board and materials and my buddies and I could enjoy a night of Dr. Pepper and D&D, but I'm confused as well.

Well being a D&D player years ago I can say the best way to start is pick up what is know as the Players Handbook, The Dungeon Master Guide and the Monster Manual. Those three books are your core rule books for playing Dungeons and Dragons. I think the latest edition is 4th so you want to make sure that you get the same edition for each book. Getting a fourth edition Players Handbook and a 3rd edition Dungeon Masters Guide is not going to help you in fact it will confuse you more. You can get those at bookstores like Barnes and Nobles or sites like Amazon. Some comic and hobby stores carry them as well. Read through at least the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide to get a better idea after that you can look into box sets and stuff for adventures.

@Tasuki I was watching someone on youtube play the 4th Edition Red Box Starter Kit. Would this be good? It seems there's a solo adventure that you go along with kinda like a choose your own path adventure book. And it's explaining thing's as it goes along.

For some reason the box art looks nostalgic, is this what the first game looked like?

The best place for people to get into the game now would be the Dungeons and Dragons board games. Which are very accessible and easy to play, but give you a rough idea of how the game works.

Like that? Then you want to get the following next: Player's Handbook (1, not 2 or 3 or whatever they're up to, the "sequels" are optional extras), Dungeon Master's Guide (again, the first one), and Monster Manual (again, the first one). With those three books, you're set to play.

If you want more books after that, feel free to ask. I've been playing D & D for some 20 years.

Having played D&D and AD&D a lot 20 years ago, I think the best thing is firstly to see that you have a bunch of people to play with and that will be serious in it, and invest the time in it.

If it's still the same today. Then you have a group, a gang, of friends, and you can decide together what you want. If everybody is OK with you being the DM, then you can pick the books, because you are the one who will do most of the reading... so it's very important to have the background first if you actually intend to play, and not just read the book and put it on the shelf, which is cool too.....

I would advise against buying a Board game if it's actual D&D that you want, because for me, that's the whole point of D&D, not having any pieces or boards, but then again, times have changed.

Not only does the 3DS come with an SD card, but it also happens to come pre-installed with one, additional dimension.

If they do indeed have a starter kit for 4th (I know they had one for 3rd edition) than yeah I would suggest getting that and looking it over. The explain it in a simplified way for new players and if you and your friends enjoy that than I suggest looking into the full blown Player's Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide. My suggest for doing 4th edition is because its the newest edition and probably the easiest to find. I am not sure what all 4th edition has since I stopped playing back in the beginning of 3rd edition. My suggest is maybe look for a hobby store in your neck of the woods that deal in comics and Magic cards and that sort of thing those places usually carry Dungeons and Dragons too and let the people there know that you are interested in playing Dungeons and Dragons but you have never played I am sure they can help you. Otherwise I say go with that starter kit.

I actually really like the look of the Starter Set. Also not to expensive (13.59 on Amazon) I think I might go for this first. Here is the website for the set.

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/redbox.aspx
It says it comes with this.

PLAYER'S BOOK
Create a character and set out on a solo adventure. (You get to keep the loot all to yourself.)
DUNGEON MASTER'S BOOK
Run the game with rules and adventure content that will challenge heroes of levels 1-2.
HERO & MONSTER TOKENS
Keep track of your characters and creatures when they clash in combat.
BACK TO THE BOX
CHARACTER SHEETS
Record your Stats, Hit Points, Weapons, Equipment, Treasure, and other heroic information.
POWER CARDS
Quick and Easy reference for all your Powers, Abilities, Spells, Magic Items, and more.
DOUBLE-SIDED BATTLE MAP
Explore a deadly dungeon or venture across a forested field.
DICE!
A set of six dice you can’t do without—it's time to roll for initiative.

If I have the character and monsters stats, can I draw my own maps. I know this comes with set adventures and maps but... after playing can I do my own thing? If so how do I start. Or is that what the advanced books are for.

Yep thats what you would need and yes you could draw your own maps and write your own adventures as well as use the ones provided.

As far as the "advance" books go this set will be good for you to get started the books that come in this set basically give you a simplified version of the main Players Handbooks and such just something to introduce you to the game. Once you feel comfortable with the game and such you can pick up what D&D players call the core rule books. The difference is that those books have optional rules that you can use for your game and go into a bit more detail but for someone like you who have never played D&D that starter set is perfect for you.
