We could limit the gliding by only being usable after you run for a certain amount of seconds.That way we can control that people don't glide/skip trough the levels but where necessary, we provide enough space to do so.
I would like it to do a flip when you do a full run and jump. Which could then be turned into a glide.
Quick last thought before I log out for the night. Love the climbing idea. Although instead of just certain surfaces (although certain surfaces being not climbable might be a good idea), the fact that he'd have to reach top speed first should keep levels from becoming easily beaten by just climbing over the top of everything. Maybe you will start sliding back down if you stop moving whilst climbing (and you can't climb back up again once you've stopped), which could add an extra layer of challenge - if you want to decide where to jump off, then decide fast, because you're not going to stay there for long. It'd also explain why you can't just climb up stuff from slow speed or stopped, he's gotta have momentum.
Gliding sounds good too. I'm thinking instead of Knuckles-style endless gliding, maybe you could have a very short glide period to give a little extra air control and distance - a bit like spinning in the air in NSMBWii, or Yoshi's flutter jump - to make landing on tricky platforms that bit more controlled.

What if you had to get to a place with air currents to glide. You could use the climbing as something that could be used to get to a place to glide. Also maybe there could be some gliding levels after you get to some of these "takeoff sites"?

What if he was just an ordinary squirrel, but was adopted as a baby by some creatures (birds, real flying squirrels, etc...)? Edit: would have to glide by artificial means, like gliding with leaves or something like that? Then you could make it possible for the "wings" to get damagef if you wanted to @KaiserGX: What number?
