Hmm...well I do have the program Game Maker...but I haven't tampered with it much.

I plan to get off my lazy butt eventually and learn some stuff on it. I'll keep you posted when I do! .

I'm working on a game that's coming out soon!

Wth I didn't know there was more replies! I was refreshing the previous page! So what program are we going to be using?
Speaking of music, I did a short Cave theme in Mix Super Star... it's very simple but I think for this kind of stage it's ment to be like that. Sounds like the underground theme...

Hi I thought I'd introduce myself My real name is James but people on fourms and stuff usually call me Colt. I'd just like to congratulate you on making such an awesome thread I'm already pretty pumped for this project and I think as a team we can make something great.

Hey everyone, best of luck with this game. I know a lot of musicians of different styles who I bet would be happy to lend a track. One of them specializes in dark brooding tracks and heavy rock music, another makes alternative rock, I even could get back in touch with a reggae guy I used to know. That's besides the electronic artists I know, I can contact them as well.

Honestly, I have Stencyl, and always wanted to make a Mario Party game (except adding in my own characters and whatnot along with the Mario ones)...for some odd reason, I can never get started, dunno why.

Well if you were to leave the programming to me I program in Delphi. This is a programming language not a game maker so for those mentioning game maker collaborating on the game engine code might be difficult. However I have good knowledge of DirectX and game design (I have written some myself as previously explained)

Though I understand if you want to find someone else, I haven't really posted much proof apart from a video.

EDIT: Sorry would like to add that if this was the case I would of course write level edit tools and all that.

The only reason I am mentioning Game Maker is because it's easy to use. Though since we have a programmer, you should do with what you are good with. So as a programmer are we the ones who will send you the sprites?

Tell me a bit of how you "run" things. I want to get to know your process so I know what I can ask you and not to do.
Things to discuss first. (doesn't mean you can't still post designs and stuff go ahead)
Edit:: Wth happened to my post!

Just to add my two cents; I think it would be a good Idea to make the game from schratch using programmeing language; I'm in no way an expert or even a novice in programmeing but of all the game makers I've used I've found that none of then let you express true freedom to develop the way you might want. secondly if we do someday get any official recognition (eg. wiiware, XBLA) it may be hard to get the publishing rights; I know it early days but it just seems like the best option seeing as we have Yai who knows Delphi plus all the other reasons I mentoined.

KaiserGX

This is best, I hope everyone agrees to this. Colt has a point and if we really want to make something out of this we need to depart ourselves from such programs and really make this from scratch.

Edit: I use to go to programming class but, I couldn't never really grasp it (I herd you have to like math to like Programming?) My only real expertise in concept designs, and in game artwork/manual/backgrounds.

so I'm guessing were desided on genre thet being 2D platformer am I right?

ps is there anything eles we've fully established

Raylax

So Yai's doing the programming?

Also uh, I doubt Wiiware etc is on the cards, as nice as it would be. Let's not run before we can walk xD

Now things we need to discuss

-Main Character
Who is he? Is he human? What can he do? What can't he do?
-Setting
A fictional world? Is there anything special about this?
-Story
What is the motive behind everyone's actions?
-Controls
What are we going to use (keyboard, joypad?)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Once we set on this, we can work on the finer details.
Edit: Yes Relax, first we become Indie Game of the Year... THEN WIIWARE! No reason we can't dream big.

Also realize this, we are not going to be done in a day, or even a month. This takes time, if we are dedicated and patient, sky is the limit. Not everyone has as much free time as everyone else, we sleep at different times, we all have our own lives (I will have a BUNCH of free time this semester). Cooperate, don't be afraid to speak up and most importantly let's work together... and LET'S DO THIS COFEE!!!!

My vote's on a non-human character, I like your cutesy animal designs. I think they'd make good protagonist material. Also I vote for a girl protagonist because there's not enough of those.

Well I'm willing to work from any ideas/concepts that may be thought up. A few things must be considered before the engine is written though. Basically I would be creating the game engine and its physics. Graphics, ideas, story, music, sounds and any resource such as that would need to be discussed and then I would implement it into the engine. Tools which allow other people to add things would also have to be made (Level editing, graphics tests etc).

An important thing to consider which I normally go through before starting any platformer:
Come up with a base plan for the engine -

  • Is it tile based, object based?
  • Do certain situations need to be considered such as gravity?
  • Will there be slopes / pixel based movement?
  • Character restrictions. (Jump height, character size in relation to tiles/objects, speed)
Then things like how the level is structured. A lot of my platforming engines had a visual layer, attribute layer, background layer and special layers for monsters and objects. After that a very basic physics test and a level editor is written, with new objects added as discussed. This is theory though, whatever this game here comes out with will be what the engine becomes.
KaiserGX

Tell me the difference between object and tile. Also the slopes and pixel based movement is what exactly? Gravity need's to be considered as I think some people would want to implement water levels. The restrictions will come after we have the concept of our character.

To test the physics we need real basic objects like squares correct?
Edit: Wiiware IS my dream. I want to play our own game on the Wii, lol.

yeah I know we've got to think realistically about this but I would hate for us to succseed in this game and then find out that we couldn't publish it because of some legal stuff.

anyway I suggest a human charectter or at least a homonid this way our hero can use tools and objects as well as any special abilities he may have I know it doesnt sound important but from a mechanic stand point but a charecter that can use tools blows our options wide open.

Yai

Gravity was referring to any 'unusual' gravity such as levels where it switches. Normal gravity comes as standard.Object/Tile is my own way of seperating Sonic style levels with Mario (Mario is lots of little squares while Sonic uses large items of different sizes linked together, I prefer the Mario style to be honest here).

Also yes to test physics it is just simply a few obstacles and a character to move about, tweak jumping and other such things with it.

KaiserGX

I get it, Tile style is easier to work with. It's like adding in separate bricks correct? For object we would have to draw the hills separate. As to gravity, you said you wanted switches and such correct? We might have a few items that could effect gravity, enemies as well.

Ah, see this is where I come in. I definately think we have to look at what kind of platformer we want to do first, then base our "skin" around it. Do we want a tough-as-nails hardcore platformer? Do we want one that's more story-based or run and gun infused? Plain ol' stage by stage style? What, if anything, is the main "gameplay gimmick," that sets it apart from others in the genre (it could be things I previously mentioned.) Once these have been decided, it'll be a lot easier to think, okay this works best with a purple-based Utopian world theme where everything is loveable and heart-based. And then I can really flex the proverbial muscle;)
