Sure, but you compare it to some of the shounen shows out there that are churned out on a weekly basis with no breaks (other than filler arcs when they catch up) and I wouldn't say that off season results in dramatically better quality production.
I'd say MHA looks obviously and more consistently better than basically any long runner I've ever watched. Maybe its because I never got around to the most recent season, but I genuinely have no idea what you're even on about.
It does look better and more consistent, I already said that. Just not dramatically so. You look at all the style of like a Jujutsu Kaisen which is done in seasons, versus the mostly fairly bland looking MHA which looks way closer to your weekly shounen chrunathon.
I think that reflects more on how impressive JJK is then badly on MHA. And quite frankly, if JJK ends up on that annual schedule, it'll presumably run into some of the same issues (see also: Attack on Titan).
But to be fair, the standards of tv anime animation is wild nowadays. MHA was absolutely one of the best looking tv anime of the year during its first couple of seasons, but in the past 3 years there's been an unbelievable amount of anime that one-upped MHA at its best. I watched a mobile game adaptation a while ago that looked better than it. Why is a mobile game, let's be honest, advertisement better looking than a seasonal shonen series done by studio Bones? I dunno!
So I think its more that MHA has failed to live up to increasingly higher expectations. Along with other potential issues (I've heard people suggest the movie/s might've taken priority and caused some issues, I don't know anything about that).
That is true, in the first season especially the show went really hard. It has just never gone that hard since, which is weird because you think the budgets would only grow season by season with how big MHA is, but I'd say there has been a pretty steady decline in quality. Even stuff like the final battle against Overhaul, visually amazing, but it went all like weird and abstract for that final showdown which I thought was spectacular, but it isn't the same as like some of the detailed, fluid, set pieces of earlier seasons. Like it just feels like they decided to get weird with it because it saved them having to do any intricate or complex animation and it is hard not feel like it is cheap looking, even if it is interesting.
Then it just feels like there is way more blandness in between. Like Deku versus Muscle, then just a mostly forgettable mush, then Deku versus Overhaul and then Endeavour versus Nomu and everything around it I basically do not remember at all.
And you are right, shows like Haikyuu!! (until the animation style change), Demon Slayer. Jujutsu Kaisen and Fire Force showed you could be a pretty generic shounen, but elevate yourself with artistic, stylish and well directed animation. MHA's visual language is much more akin to the more generic, older school of shounen anime products rather than the more experimental offerings of the more seasonal shounen offerings. It isn't bad, but definitely less interesting (to me).
My big issue for me is more that I've found MHA increasingly underwhelming from more of a writing/character/story basis as its gone on (and season 5 from what I've heard, is even more underwhelming!). Especially in season 4 where the entire goal of half the season was to save a sad child that we're supposed to care about because...child in danger. Instead of y'know, focusing on characters I care about at all or knowing how to make me care at all (which is a shame since I loved the ending of the arc, but it was not worth 11 episodes of underwhelming).

Yeah it is weird, MHA almost feels like it has no story. Like you have thread throughs of things, but so much of it just feels like these random events created through procedural generation. Like one of those robot scripts where you feed like a thousand hours of something into a generated and see what is spat back out again.
I also think MHA's pacing is just plain bad at times, like with the Eri thing, there are actually a bunch of major events through MHAs story that I would argue have almost no context for the audience whatsoever. They may have consequences for the world of MHA or the characters in that scene, but no emotional bridge has been built to the audience themselves for them to really care.
Part of that might be due to the fact that there are so many damn characters, but I feel like there are other shounen shows with big casts that just manage those casts much better. Maybe some of that is nostalgia, I dunno.
Hey everyone, I've had this scene from a show that I cannot for the life of me find online so I was hoping you could help me: what's the anime where in one of the beginning scenes, a girl gets hit by a truck and dies? I'm pretty sure it's an isekai but I don't want to look up 'girl dies to a truck anime' for obvious reasons (I've been got once before, I'm not letting it happen again. Curse you jump!). Thanks for the help!

@Fizza Tentacle love is a very well established anime trope, along with underage girl bewbs and causing children to have seizures. If you want to be a real anime fan then you better get used to tentacle romance as the other anime fans wont respect you!
In any case you're probably thinking of "Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life".
I am also slowly working my way through Tokyo Revengers, people seem to be absolutely nuts for this but I just think it is mostly fine. It is decently animated, well performed with a "one more episode" kind of energy. But in typical anime fashion, it does sometimes feel like we've spent three episodes doing what could have been done in about 10 minutes and I don't feel like all that extra time spent has enhanced anything.
I am also watching Idaten, this is a... weird one. It is gorgeously animated and directed, although heavily stylised. It is pretty much all style, no substance, but it is nice to have these big battles back to back with very little filler to wade through in between. The issue for me is I really hate sex stuff in anime, I am sure there are examples where it is not weird, but every anime I've seen with this stuff it is always creepy, weird and usually pretty vile. Like the first episode literally ends with a contextless, out of nowhere, adds nothing, extended rape scene. Yikes. I kinda half thought about bouncing there because it was so repulsive, but I kept going and it is starting to take another dark turn and I dunno, I might end up dropping this.
I am still going through Revengers. I am now at a point in the show where it is focusing more on action and this is very much more my tastes than all the other parts of this show. Like I know the point of this show isn't slightly larger than life teenagers fighting in gangs, but this is by far the most interesting part for me. I've looked around for other shows that focus just on this aspect and it seems like nothing else really exists. I have read the Crows manga, along with OUT and the Crows sequel or prequel (I can't remember) when I was a lot younger.
I finished Idaten too as it was only short. Again, along with all the rape in this show it also throws in some casual paedophilia towards the end. It is extremely rough and I genuinely have no idea how this aired. You could argue it isn't gratuitous, but it is far more than just implied subtext and yeah, real nasty. Had I known the show was going to take this turn, I wouldn't have ever finished it and probably should have known better when the gratuitous rape scene happened at the end of the first episode. Spoiler tags for censorship purposes.
With that vile sack of bilge out of the way, I went back to try and finish the more wholesome fanservice of Harukana Receive, with it's surprisingly beautiful animation and surprising abundance of heart, for something that could have just been a shallow collection of shots of cute girls in bikinis. It ain't no Haikyuu!!, but I feel like I'll probably be chasing those highs for the rest of my life and I feel like if I need to make do, you can do way worse than this show.
@Fizza It having a stupid name just proves it's an anime, still it's not as bad as "The Legend of the Legendary Heroes", "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon", "And You Thought There Is Never A Girl Online" or "I Want You To Make a Disgusted Face and Show Me Your Underwear".
Tell me again why I have to take anime seriously? ;p
@DomGC Literally, I've only seen it from memes but it's just always stuck in my mind ever since. I think they come back as a zombie? Not 100% sure though.

@jump 'I've actually heard of that second one you mentioned there, I've seen snippets of it here and there and it is.... interesting. Just... interesting.

@jump That actually looks interesting, I'll see if I can give that a watch at some point.
Although, as I was watching it, I actually remembered what show I was thinking of. It was this one called 'Zombieland Saga', this was the clip I was thinking of:
But hey, I found something that looks even better than it so it's a win-win in the end.

@Fizza Sounds like Zombie land saga. If thats not it you can just look up truck kun because that thing has killed so many people on the road (I'm not joking, you might find what your looking for if you look up truck kun)

I'm not going to give a final thought on MHA till the manga ends, but if I could say one thing.
Its that, this last arc is, a little all over the place? like idk maybe its just me, but it just doesn't feel like it can stay in one spot for to long before it starts moving again, not to mention I didn't like how they showed a bunch of cool one off characters, and kinda didn't do anything with them?
But its a manga and for all I know it can take a Left turn just like that. so till its finished, I will not judge. My score of the manga (And the anime) thus far is a good 7/10, arc wise, as a whole the show is a easy 9 in the early seasons I think.

I want to watch this show now. I've seen clips, and there's one dude who feels like he's from an abridged version of the show, when he's not at all abridged. It's amazing.
