Anyways, as far as the Switch's future goes, the big problem I see is the lack of major 1st party titles for August/September as of right now. August at least has MHGU, but the month itself looks relatively barren. September doesn't have a major title, but has a few third party titles... Dark Souls is probably September then, delayed to make up for the Yoshi and Fire Emblem delays.

Hopefully they announce a Wii U port or two for August and September during Treehouse. Would fill the gap a bit. October looks nice though (Super Mario Party, Mega Man 11, Lego DC Supervillains, Starlink, My Hero One's Justice). Hoping Dragon Ball FighterZ comes in September/October. The further away from Smash, the better.

Confirmed on Treehouse Live that voice chat for Fortnite Switch works normally (i.e. headsets work).

I think anyone that was upset forgot how Nintendo handles E3. They focus on games that have a short release window 6-9 months ideally because they want you focused on what you can buy soon rather than two tears from now.

I didn't forget that. I thought they'd be announcing more stuff for that 6-9 month window. It's incredibly barren and when you consider the fact that Nintendo has nearly all of their resources focused on 1 console for the first time in decades, I don't understand why. Seems like they should a big first party game ever 3 months

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Treehouse has just casually mentioned party chat with Fortnite through the headphone jack. Is this something I missed ie chat without the app?

This was basically a more fleshed-out E3 2016. If you didn't like that approach and/or don't like Smash, you won't like this conference. For those that love Smash (like me), this is extremely hype. THIS is a deep-dive into a game.

Also, Daemon Ex Machina looks so good. It looks like Xenoblade X's Skell combat (seriously, the mechs look JUST LIKE SKELLS!!!) mixed with Bayonetta 2's mech combat but more fleshed out! I need that game soon! That's so awesome.

Fire Emblem also looks really good, I think there's quite a bit of gameplay upgrades there from what little I've seen. Not a super die-hard Fire Emblem fan, but I might get it.

Xenoblade 2 DLC! This looks phenomenal and perfectly lines up with recent datamines for that game. My purchase in the Season Pass has been 1000% justified.

Those are my highlights and that's really all I needed. I'd give Nintendo a solid B. That said, it would most likely be a D without Smash (which looks SOO SO SO FANTASTIC), and if you don't like Smash then it'll hover around that for you.

@ThanosReXXX "the disgrace that is EA... They deserve to rot in the deepest pits of Hell. " This is quite true. However they still managed to put on a better E3 show than Nintendo. Even with the ginger....

Of course EA showed EVERYTHING they had while Nintendo showed almost nothing of what they have.....it's a good distinction

I'm quite convinced now that Retro is in fact not working on anything and hasn't been for a while. I suspect they're primarily an overflow studio helping out with EAD's (or whatever their new name is) bigger projects like Odyssey. It's been a console generation now we're wondering what they're working on. Eventually it becomes clear, they either aren't, or they're helping out on MP4 (likely) etc.

@BenGrimm I know, right? Story mode is all I care about in Smash, and with 30 minutes and almost the whole Direct being about Smash, I still don't know! But we know about DK's facial animations.

@BigBadJohn That was the first reveal of this fact, but it's good news moving forwards.

biggest disappointment of this E3 though:

no new Ridge Racer

but i feel like these are only made for new console launches now anyway

@NEStalgia "DQ11 looks fine on PS4"

I don't know, something is "off" with it. Do you remember Colorforms? Those not sticker stickers? They were cute, but they were all big solid colors with little detail. Both DQ11 and NNK2 have almost the exact same cell shaded art style but DQ11 looks like it's Colorforms come to life where NNK2 looks like it's real life turned to cartoons.

@NEStalgia No way. EA's conference was abysmal with nothing of note to announce, the same old repeated garbage, poorly presented games, and barely any look at any games with gameplay. Say what you will about Nintendo's conference, but comparing their conference to EA's is nonsense.

@CanisWolfred @Ryu_Niiyama I actually went into the Direct with my expectations firmly in check, and I STILL got disappointed. That first trailer got me really excited, and for a second, it even got me fooled into thinking that I was watching some kind of Transformers game, but after a quick Fire Emblem rush, an okayish Mario Party announcement, and a reasonably decent indie/upcoming titles reel, the whole "going into WAY too much detail" on Smash Bros thing, was really just too much.

That is what the Treehouse sessions are for: in-depth looks and let's plays of the games just shown off in the Direct. Now, it was simply a Smash Direct with some bonus games thrown in for good measure, and it was indeed making me wonder why Nintendo would spend tens of thousands of dollars to show something like this on E3, a show where you HAVE to go all out and bring your A game, and they simply didn't succeed in doing that. In all fairness also in part because games like Fortnite and Paladins were already spoiled by those damn hackers/leakers again, so that also took away from it, but still...

@Ryu_Niiyama And that's just the thing: they may not have to bank on E3, but it IS the event to come out guns blazing. Why else go there? Save the money, stay home and broadcast an extra Direct or two, because this Direct was hardly any more exciting than any of their usual ones, so in that respect, I didn't get the feeling that I was watching an E3 presentation at ALL, so in my opinion, it was a MASSIVE missed opportunity for them to go the extra mile.

But maybe they would have to be with their backs against the wall again, like with the Wii U, or like Microsoft was last year. They at least got the message, and they sure delivered this year. They have a FAR greater understanding of what their target audience is expecting of them, and they also know how to market it. The Switch is going to lose momentum if they keep fizzling out like this.

Here's hoping that they still have some surprises left in the coming months. Doesn't have to be 2018 releases, but some teaser trailers or visual confirmation of certain titles would be nice...

Still keeping one eye on those Treehouse sessions, though. You may never know what happens...

@Dezzy I still think they never staffed up for HD development. 3DS let them crank stuff out VERY quickly. They rely on a lot of outsourced assistance for now, and if other outsources are busy...it gets backlogged. So if they saved 4 years of WiiU development to launch Switch with, they put it all out last year. Now it's another 2-4 years to turn around big titles again. But of course even 3DS was carried a lot by great 3rd parties. Which is happening for Switch. But they ALSO just got started last year. So next year and the year after should begin a glut of TOO much. Technically it started this year, Ninty just forgot. Imagine what this direct would have looked like if it included Wolfenstein, Dark Souls, Star Link, FIFA, Ys, Shining Res., Vesperia, Okami HD in equal measure? I feel their 1st party is slow enough they can do maybe 3-4 games a year versus 1-2 games a year on WiiU. But those semi-exclusives third parties are critically part of it. SMT5 coming.....not a mention. DQXI....nobody mentions it.

BenGrimm

@NEStalgia

They seem to have focused on so many little things and ignored the one big thing that people wanted to know.

BenGrimm

NEStalgia

@rjejr I don't know, it looks great to me! As does NNK2. But you reminded me @Dezzy and @Ryu_Niiyama Valkyria ALSO coming to Switch.....and nobody mentions it. They had like 40 games to show including indies, and they showed closer to 15, but most of them for under 20 seconds.

I'd embed the "Price is Right" losing horn if I could figure out how to embed video.

@EvilLucario They had worse games, but presented them much better. As badly as they did. Unless you're among the "Smash is so amazing you guyz the world has waited for this" cabal...in which case Ninty would seem a lot better It's like Smash is Nintendo's FIFA.

@ThanosReXXX Indeed, and more, E3 is their show that speaks to all of gaming, both the industry, the press, and the (core) consumer. That's when they have all eyes on them. The regular directs are just newsletters to the faithful. Fun, but no substitute for a big demo to the total market. And instead they bring a 10 minute sizzle/Reggie reel and spend the rest talking about Smash release notes.

Edit: Heck Sony casually announced they were giving Plus members CoD Black Ops 3 for free as though it was nothing. Nintendo gave us details on the Wii Fit trainer's palate swap.

@BenGrimm That's the way Sakurai thinks. It makes me think they kind of gave him free range to present Smash however he wanted, and that's what we got.

@NEStalgia Valkyria ALSO

And YS VIII which I'll probably buy now as there's nothing else single player coming to Switch this year.

@Tsurii check out the demo

Apologies but um, which demo? I've lost track, it's been a long day and I'm 3 hours late for lunch and coffee. NNK2 and DQ11 don't have demos. I have played the Ys 8 demo on the PS4.

Oh wait, Octopath traveler? Yeah I played that for about 3 minutes until I had to move and realized it wasn't for me. I like action.

Yeah, now we can go back to another year of wondering what Retro Studios is working on, when they will announce a new Pikmin game, or Animal Crossing, and what Metroid Prime will look like

I'm a casual fan of Smash at most. I like the game, but it's not something I need to have day one. I didn't care at all about those small details, so I wonder how big the group is that actually enjoyed it outside of the core Smash fans. And there was that mech game, not my thing, but it looks neat.

What you said. Oh and this too:
No Pikmin 4
Also, Star Fox Racing game was a big fat lie

Well, at least Fortnite can be played with a normal headset plugged straight into the Switch, as the developers just revealed in the Treehouse interview. Saves the whole idiotic smart phone setup...
