Hello one, hello all! Here it is, the thread where you, yes YOU, can list your plans for the next year of gaming!
I will start us off:
I want to finish more games; this year I only completed the Portal games. While they were amazing, they were also impulse buys, and I do not want to keep growing my backlog! So my rule of thumb will be, "beat a game, buy a game." And I will only break this rule if Splatoon 4 releases and I don't have any near completion lol.
Play more stuff with my family/friends. I played a LOT of Splatoon this year, so next year I want to do more stuff with my loved ones!
Complete NSMBW. My family has been gunning for 100% since I was but a wee lad. This year is the year we will beat the infamous 9-7 once and for all!
A tall task considering Warframe is my liveservice daily constant. Monster Hunter Wilds and Fantasy Life i both are due early in 2025, both will likely eat 80+ hours of my time themselves. There are a dozen or more rpg games I'm looking forward to throughout next year. I continue to dabble in Path of Exile 2. And the battle with the backlog never ends.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
I don't have any huge resolutions this year. Iv'e had money set aside and saved for Switch 2 for quite awhile so I will be getting that asap. I am considering also upgrading my overall gaming setup a little bit because my elderly TV can't do 4K. I suspect there will be a ton of games I want next year so my only other goal is not to go too crazy and to finish some of my old games between buying new ones.
My main one is to continue building my Switch library to ultimately become the definitive platform. If Switch 2 handles backwards compatibility well, that'll be made even easier but Switch 2 happens when it happens. There's still plenty of Switch 1 stuff to come.
My resolution is to buy fewer games and focus more on playing games from my backlog.
I hope to catch up on a few classics like Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII and Majora's Mask. In addition, I will try to motivate myself more to learn Japanese and will try to complete a few titles entirely in that language.
Ideally I'd like to try and finish more games. A mid-length game often takes me a couple of months, and I'll never get through everything I want to play at that rate. But I don't want it to feel like a chore so I'm not going to impose a schedule or anything.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
Being an adult with work/family commitments, gaming time is pretty scarce these days. I guess I'd like to have that as "quality" time and not worry as much about how many games I'm getting through. Because of my leanings towards JRPGs, it takes me a long time to complete games so I'm always conscious of what I'm not getting to so I will occasionally rush through things for the sake of moving onto the next.
My favourite experiences from last year were games I felt like I spent more time in, exploring out with the main plot. Conversely, there were a couple of games I battered through the main story because I wanted to check them off the list but ended up feeling a little disappointed/like I didn't get the best experience. Naturally, a game has to do enough to make me want to deviate off the critical path but I maybe didn't give some the opportunity.
I'm also a fiend for a sale (ain't we all?) so the backlog keeps growing. Need to control that itchy trigger finger!
I want to beat a lot more games, and mostly avoid huge games, since I have two Xenoblades left to play.
Bare minimum I want to beat: Paper Mario:TTYD remake, Sayonara Wild Hearts, the 2D Yooka Laylee, Kirby Battle Royale and Star Allies, Megaman Zero 3, the 20th anniversary version of Beyond Good and Evil, a PS4 game, at least 2, maybe 3 of my remaining 3DS games, Xenoblade:DE, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, Doom Eternal, Alien Isolation, No More Heroes 3. Also a few replays. (especially Metroid Dread and my 2nd attempt to 100% OOT that hopefully doesn't end with me being soft locked out of exactly one upgrade)
My main goal in 2025 is simply to play more. According to Nintendo's retrospective, I only played 282 hours on the Switch in 2024, which is very, very little.
I spent a good part of last year playing my DS and 3DS games, which was very productive and I managed to reduce the backlog on those systems considerably.
I still have DS and 3DS games that I plan to play this year, but the main focus will be on the Switch.
At the end of the year I want to come back here and see how I did.
Like many have said I'm hoping to get back on the backlog more. I was doing pretty good until when it was Snowrunner's (Switch) turn it put the backlog on ice for a time. I'm slowly (no pun intended) getting better at putting it aside and playing other things. I just picked up Neva (Switch) I'm really digging it. I totally understand what @mcmicken was stated. As we age those work/life (and also "honey-do lists") throw the biggest of all monkey wrenches into gaming. I also totally understand what you're were saying about getting that "full" experience of a game. When I was plowing through the backlog for a time I know there were games I wanted to just play more after beating but I moved onto the next game on the list.
Anyways, I'm hoping to at least get through these games within the first half of the year:
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
Ace Combat 7
Red Dead Redemption
Sonic X Shadow Generations
Metroid Zero Mission
I keep a log of the backlog games on my phone (it's long!) but at bare minimum I want to get through those!
In terms of games, I also wanna try to focus on my backlog this year. I feel like I'm getting a bit better at it recently. Especially since I've gotten burnt out from Splatoon 3.
"Give yourself the gift of being joyfully you."
Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World
AKA MarioVillager92. Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I want to get to know you first. Thanks! ❤️
Just out of curiosity, how's everyone doing on their goals? I have played a lot more multiplayer stuff, but I definitely didn't stick with my "no impulse buys" rule 😬 I did finish 3 games, though: TotK (main story and a ton of quests), DKB (not the DLC tho), and MKW (by unlocking all outfits and getting 3 stars)
I didn't have an account on NL when this thread was made, but my goals this year were to "start saving up for Nintendo's next console" (since the Switch 2 name hadn't been officially confirmed yet), "start and beat Zelda TotK" and "finally start getting into Dragon Quest", both of which I think I passed with flying colors. I'm well on my way to being able to buy a Switch 2 early next year (unless something drastic happens), I beat TotK after a solid 110 hours, and I'm already 35 hours into my second Dragon Quest game (and probably my last one for several years, since there are other game series I want to play). Assuming there will be a 2026 one of these, I'll make sure to participate in that one as well.

My top 5 favorite games:
1: Pokémon Violet
2: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
3: Animal Crossing New Horizons
4: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
5: The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
We didn't know how expensive Switch 2 and Switch 2 games would be when this thread was made.
I've only bought one actual Switch 2 game this year so far plus a couple dlcs and a few much cheaper third party games so I guess I am sort of hitting my goals.
I didn't have an NL account when the forum post was created either, but I was already more or less a “lurker.”
But my resolutions worked out more or less. With the launch of the Switch 2, I said goodbye to my Series X. The last game I played on the Series X was Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
Since then, I've been playing exclusively on the Switch 2.
My goal is to play through 12+ games a year, so at least one per month.
I'm currently on eighth and working on my ninth.
On the Switch 2, I've completed three Switch 2 games and one indie game.
Mario Kart World (if you can call it completing) all cups on 3 stars, every Knockout Tour and all costumes and vehicles + several P-switches & coins.
Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty and Yakuza 0 Director's Cut.
Plus an indie game named Sense - a Cyberpunk Ghost Story.
And currently I'm playing Final Fantasy I from the Pixel remastered version (for the first time in over 35 years, back then on the NES).
I also wanted to buy fewer games or be more selective, but that worked about as well as pigs can fly, i.e., not at all ^^
Arguing with stupid People is like playing Chess with a Pigeon. No matter how well you play Chess, the Pigeon will knock over all the pieces, poop on the board, and strut around as if it had won.

So far, everything is going according to plan.
My 3DS "had an accident" a few months ago, so it's been a while since I've touched it (but I managed to finish a few games earlier this year).
Things are going really well on the Switch, I'm playing a lot more than I did last year.
