Essential? Like... all of the ones id consider have been mentioned, so i'll just name a few no one has mentioned yet, of which the first id consider Essential.
Luminous Arc 1 / 2
Heroes of Mana
Eternal Eyes
Stella Glow
Vanguard Bandits
Suikoden Tactics
Front Mission
Honorable Mentions:
La Pucelle Tactics
Resonance of Fate
Tears of Tiara II: Heir of the Overlord
Langrisser I & II ( But i do recommend Warsong over them if you can get your hands on it)
Final Fantasy X-2 Last Mission (it was pretty good in my opinion)
Mentions:
Enchanted ARMS
Utawarerumono Deception / Truth / ZAN / Prelude (more text then gameplay)
Natural Doctrine
Phantom Brave
Someday, somewhere in the Sky...
may we meet again.
The only ones NOT mentioned yet i could remember (or just found Randomly) are:
Dark Deity (Fire Emblem like which came out recently)
Gungnir (Part of the Dept. Heaven Series)
Blue Wing Blitz (Wonderswan) which i dont know if it ever got a translation but since you seem to be thirsty for more id recommend you to check some japan exclusives out if you have the chance.
Same goes for Gloria Union: Twin Fates in Blue Ocean.
@thriftyarek888 I’m declaring your thread null and void because you listed Advance Wars as a tactical RPG when it’s a strategy game. 😝
Credit for Jeanne D’arc, though - keep intending to try that one.
FF Tactics is probably my favourite, even though the interface is pretty clunky by modern standards. But it’s so delightfully breakable with the job system.
Nobody is said SMT Devil Survivor yet, so I’ll throw that series in.
Fire Emblem Conquest, Awakening, and Echoes, and Advance Wars: Dual Strike. The fifth is still open for competition because there's a lot of tactical RPGs I've yet to try like Stella Glow, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, the list goes on.
Hang on to your youthful enthusiasms - you'll be able to use them better when you're older.
I don't have 5 SRPGs, but hear me out on this one: Blood Bowl. It's a game where Humans, Dwarves, Orcs, and other various fantasy race archetypes play a game of deadly American Football. The game is based on a board game from the 80s, so the field is grid-based and many outcomes will be determined by die rolls, modifiers, and stats (such as strength, agility, movement, etc). The players on your team gain experience points by doing things like making touchdowns or injuring (or killing!) other players. Play through a season to see how far you can take your team.
The caveat is that Blood Bowl isn't on the Switch....yet. Blood Bowl III should be released in 2022. The other thing is that these games have a fair amount of jank and a fairly steep learning curve. But i've really had a lot of fun with Blood Bowl II and it's worth a mention.
Otherwise....Devil Survivor Overclocked if you haven't played it yet.
