I'm fairly surprised a topic like this hasn't been started so I guess I'll do the honors. I've beaten the game (I still need to do a few sidequests though) so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

To a person who's NEVER played a Zelda game, well the story is a bit "woah, what in THE WORLD". I really don't want to give away anything but the spirit tracks story seems to be a mix of mythology with something tim burton would think up. Although I myself actually liked the story, there's alot of moments that really bring you into the game. You just need to go in playing it with an open mind. The gameplay is amazing, nothing short of. There are some fantastic co-op moments (between you and zelda) but there is also plenty of gameplay without co-op so everything balances out. You control everything with your stylus. And just to tell you if you didn't already know, zelda games are usually just going into a dugeon getting a new weapon/item beating the boss getting a piece of something magical (in this case "rail maps") then going into another dugeon. The thing I like about this zelda, is the fact that the puzzles are extremely well thought out. One example (I'll only give you one example so I won't completely ruin it for you) is when theres a lake and you have to find a way to get accross it, well theres a tiki torch with ice fire coming out of it, so what do you do? You take your boomerang and throw it at the ice fire then at the lake to freeze path way so you can get accross. There are many intriuging puzzles like this that are new to the series and really make you all gitty inside. The enimies are well thought up and are almost a puzzle in themselves, for example an enemy keeps trying to eat you, well when it opens its mouth throw a bomb inside. The bosses are spectacular, they sometimes take up two screens and feel like there bosses you would see on a console version. Also there are alot of side quests, seriously I dont know an exact time, but I would definetly guess about five hours worth (at least!) and there fun too. The train travel is a nice addition as well, and it never truly gets boring sense your always having to fight something a long the way or activate a switch or two. The music is probably among the absolute best I have ever heard on a handheld maybe even better than alot of good console music, and its sure to keep you humming it through out the day. All in all if you've never played a zelda game, I completely and totally 100% recomend this. 9/10 (I do have one minor complaint however, the flute can sometimes be glitchy, you don't have to use it a whole lot though so don't worry about it)

I have not played it but I'm getting it for Christmas and really excited. I just beat the awesome Phantom Hourglass and I hope its better than that, which will be pretty tough to do.
And I'm surprised, Odnetnin, that you haven't played a Zelda game. I just figured Zelda was like Mario, everyone has played one at least a couple of times. Heck, I love Zelda way more than Mario, because of the epic scale of things in all the games, and the story telling. I grew up with both LttP and Super Mario World, but LttP was the better of the two for me. Beating Agahnim and finding out the game was less than halfway done blew my six year old mind away.
Anyway, yeah I cant wait to get Spirit Tracks. That and Chinatown Wars are my Christmas DS games.

@MoFaJo Thank you kindly for the extremely detailed answers. It sounds great. (I should be getting it for Christmas.)
@PaupackElite Actually, I've played Ocarina, Majora's, Four Swords Adventures (if it was on GBA; I don't really remember), Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Twilight Princess, though I never got into them very much (PH because I was only able to borrow it from a friend for a short period of time). I asked about someone who had never played a Zelda game before because that answer would be over nine-thousands times more helpful without someone saying it has some of the best puzzles, bossfights, etc. in the series, and saying it reminds them of Link's Awakening or Zelda II or whatever.

This is one of the best zelda games ive ever played

what?

PaupackElite

@Odnetnin Oh I get it. Yeah that makes sense why you would want that kind of answer. And on GBA it was a LttP with a Four Swords multiplayer but the actual Four Swords Adventure was on Gamecube.

Solid Zelda game hindered by the annoying as hell train tracks.
Not that I don't like the train tracks. I LOVE them, it's the fact you're constantly annoyed, not challenged with random mobs poping up and those stupid stupid trains you can't destroy. What were they thinking? Dur it's fun going in a circle 3 times till those trains take another path that finally lets you through.

Random does not equal fun. If I could just clear a map and not have the baddies return I would love just traveling around listening to the music and looking at the beautiful graphics.

I will be getting this for xmas and I never played PH but maybe thats good because everyone says ST is better if you haven't played PH

I got it today and am a bit concerned about how fast I'm getting through it. Not counting the Tower of Spirits how many temples are there?

Five temples and then you get to revisit the Tower of Spirits each time. It is not as short as Minish Cap but still one of the shortest Zelda titles I've played. If I recall correctly Phantom Hourglass was slightly longer. They compensate this in a crappy way: the train driving, while not boring, has some serious pacing issues and it is just harder to get about quickly than in Phantom Hourghlass. This is a real shame as it could have been better than PH. The Tower of Spirits is much less tedious than the annoying Temple of the Ocean King in PH which people were annoyed with. However, the improvement that is the Tower of Spirits is counterbalanced by the slow pace of the game that does a bad job at hiding the game's short length.

Both titles are about even in quality.

Just got it this morning. So far I've gotten to the first temple, but I've been busy playing my other gifts too. I've enjoyed it a lot so far except I think riding the train around is a little boring. I really like that you can work with Zelda to perform tasks and I agree, zezhyrule, she is very peppy.

Just got to the 3rd temple. The game seems to be progressing quickly.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!!!
OMG!!!! Linebeck is back!! I'm so happy. I was thinking to myself how the game could survive without his awesome theme. It was kinda sad to see Linebeck I's grave though.

no real tricks or anything, just try to keep a clear view of your surroundings, so you don't lose sight of it as it crawls around, also look out for barrels, think they do more damage.

Just got the game for Christmas, and I am loving it so far. I know I am not very far into it, but I feel I am already becoming more engaged than I did with Phantom Hourglass. For some reason, this title feels like it has a bit more polish to it, and everything from the cutscenes to the music are superb. I have only put a couple hours into it so far, but I love how you can use Zelda's spirit to possess the Phantoms and use her for puzzles.

MINOR SPOILERS

the game really has ten temples
5 tower
5 regular (theres one where you go to a sand temple which you can see on the ocean map, its the pyramid)*
End SPOILER

EDIT*
also, I think personally the train is the best vehicle so far (other than the horse) in the Zelda series
One more thing, about the game not being long. It's actually very long if you do all the side quests, which are really fun but can some times be quite long. I don't know for sure how long it is, but with just the story, its probably about 15 hours long, but if you do all the side quests its probably around 20 hours (remember this is just an estimate, and my level of gaming as far as zelda games go is pretty good)
