In an interview with one of Nintendo's representatives, IGN has (unfortunatly) confirmed that Nintendo has no plans on a DSi Virtual Console (or "virtual handheld" as some have been calling it). She said that while she's happy at how enthusiastic fans have been about the idea, and she thinks its an interesting idea, she has to be honest--as of now it doesn't look like its going to happen.

Hello all! Long time Nintendo fan! So I have a question, it can be answered with no or not at this time Will the Nintendo DSi have a virtual console similar to the Wii but to support handheld games of the past?
1. No, will never happen or 2. Not at this time, possibly in the future as to say it is not ruled out Or Yes if it is, and you don't have to tell me when.

Hello and thank you for contacting us,
That is a great question! However, at this time, we are not planning a Virtual Console-style service for the Nintendo DSi. If you’re a fan of Game Boy games, we suggest using a Game Boy Advance SP as we still support and are able to repair them if necessary.
Sincerely,
Sharon Matheny Nintendo of America Inc. Nintendo's home page: http://www.nintendo.com/ Power Line (Automated Product Info): (425) 885-7529

By support, we mean that we still offer repair services and replacement parts for the product. The Game Boy Advance SP is no longer being manufactured, nor is it shipping to retailers. The same is true of the Game Boy Advance games.
I hope this information has been helpful.

I understand that the GBA SP is still supported, but give me any local outlet that I can go and purchase a brand new GBA SP? A GBA Micro? I live in Wichita KS and there is no outlet in town that stocks them. I have looked online at GameStop.com
So the only option that I have is a used system locally or being robbed online under the "supply and demand" rules. There is no way to get a GameBoy Advance really, unless I want to run the gaunlet of used systems, which I don't. I won't mention the game selection, there is none in new. The major department stores will only stock the newest game titles for the current systems. The local stores have wrote the GBA off completely. The only thing left is games like Sorry the board game and pet games. The only option is used on the games themselves and locally you are charged an arm and a leg and online with eBay and Amazon you have to worry about counterfiet cartridges. It is not easy to play GBA any longer. Nintendo may support the system, but the systems is the current install base, you cannot find them.
Sorry for the rant, but it isn't easy to enjoy the GBA, I would if I could, but I cannot afford to spend that much on one. I would honestly love the GBA Micro but that is even harder to find. Bottom line, I understand....But give us a break in the US, the common ideal amoung all DSi gamers and would be DSi owners is that the Virtual Console would boost the make the system...Look at ds.IGN.com, they have several articles and numerous forum posts about the VC, also look at nintendlife.com and the forums there...Look all over the internet and you will find that the US and Europe is foaming at the mouth for the VC on the DSi....

And one last email:
Hello,
I want to thank you for participating in our email survey. As follow up, I wanted to address the fact that you wish to see a Virtual Console for the Nintendo DSi that allows users to download and play older handheld games. As to whether or not it's coming, I can only reiterate what Sharon told you originally: Nintendo has no plans for such a service. That said, I wanted it made clear that your feedback is important to us and that your comments have been forwarded for further review.
Sincerely,
Nintendo of America Inc. David Marshall

A Linux-based video game handheld that people often use to run emulators of SNES, NES, GBA, Genesis, TG-16, etc.
No Virtual Console for DSi is actually a good thing in a way, as painful as it might be to us.
Hey shadow, the GP2X Wiz is out now, they did way with the twin ARM architecture with loaded with single are at 512 Mhz and bumped the RAM up to 16 MG I believe. Higher res and constrast screen. Small form factor and a rechargeable battery!
Play-asia.com has them

Niiice, might have to pick one of those up. US$ 179.90 (199.34 CAD) for something more powerful than the PSP can't be too bad, can it?
Also, to those who want GBA games to ever come to the DSi Shop, I'm thinking that it is at least possible. I looked at the specs of DSi compared to GBA and it seems plausible that Nintendo could potentially emulate these games on the DSi.

Well that last email was promising. Perhaps if everyone here wrote them an email about it or we did a petition or something we could make some noise?
