So, we've nearly come to the end of 4 whole generations of Pokémon (roll on Gen 5). So in that time, I bet you guys have had teams you've prized above all others. List 'em.
My favourite team is my current Pokémon Platinum one, the one I went through the whole game with as soon as I reached the Day Care centre. From that point on I bred 6 Eevee and went through the rest of the game with those guys in various evolved forms. Sorry Monferno, you've been Box'd.
Jolteon (killer speed, mighty Thunderbolt)
Umbreon (I don't normally use walls at all, but this thing absorbs hits like a sponge)
Vaporeon (An excellent wall like Umbreon, but also able to dish out some fairly meaty attacks like Ice Beam and Surf)
Espeon (powerful sweeper. And thank you, Platinum, for your move tutors - Psychic and Signal Beam make for a deadly combo)
Flareon (shame about the speed and lack of powerful physical fire attack, but very strong in other physical moves. Fire Fang's not that bad, I guess)
Glaceon (solid defenses, decent special attack. Nicely rounded 'mon)
Also special mention to my Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers Of Darkness teams. Chikorita and Blitzy (Charmander) first time through (I kinda miss those guys now), Bulbasaur and Sparks (Pikachu) this time around. These guys are made special simply because the storyline of these games makes them so. I'd say don't be put off by the seemingly shallow and repetitive gameplay of the PMD games - once you get into it, it's a game of careful strategy hold up by one of the most heart-warming and well-told storylines in gaming. Just get used to having to do a lot of level grinding, it can be very unforgiving when it wants to be.
Anyway, yes. List your greatest and best-loved teams from the last decade and a half of Pokémon. I choose you, forum people!
Swampert: Despite its dual weakness to grass, its ground-type also allows for an immunity to electric moves, which was awesome against Wattson's horribly tough team in Emerald.
Infernape: A pokémon able to execute some seriously tough fire and fighting type moves.
Staraptor: Not only is this pokémon an alround better option than many similar pokémon such as Swellow and Pidgeot, it is also able to learn the fighting move Close Combat, which is one of the nicest moves yet.
Lucario: The steel type has its own weaknesses but it negates the weaknesses fighting has. And it just has an allround awesome set of moves it can learn, even without TM's and Move Tutors used.
Raichu: I like pokémon that can fast and hard. Many electric types fit that description such as this Pikachu evolution. Can also be replaced with Jolteon or Manectric.
Garchomp: Fast and incredibly tough. Overused, but worthy.
Alakazam: Massive speed and special attack, what more could you need for a capable Psychic type.
Venusaur: Classic grass pokémon. Teach it Sludge Bomb!
Togekiss. Togepi and Togetick sucked, but then Diamond and Pearl came along. This guy, unlike other normal/flying types, has massive special defense, making moves like Ice Beam and Thunderbolt less useful.
Sandslash, Flygon, Absol are my three favourite pokemon.
Furret, Hitmonlee, and Heracross are up there. Since I play Gold the most I've gone through many Typhlosion, and I tend to use Crobat in most of my playthroughs after gen 2.
I was never good at strategizing a whole team, but I had several individual Pokemon I was quite proud of: Venusaur (Toxic, Substitute, Leech Seed, Absorb) Vaporeon (Toxic, Double Team, Acid Armor, Substitute)
I forget the rest, but often those were enough. Vaporeon was amusing because he was pretty much impossible to damage unless hit on the first turn, and Toxic would just slowly kill the other guy while I did nothing, haha. Venusaur was similar, and leech seed had this effect where the damage done by Toxic (or normal poison) would be leeched in addition to the leech seed damage, so he'd keep healing, too. I may have had a Muk with a similar moveset, as well: Toxic, Minimize, Acid Armor, and something else. I would seriously replay the game just to get Toxic in the same way that my friends kept replaying it to get Mewtwos and starters.
I've never really had a full team before to tell you the truth, I usually just use my starter, one of the first birds, and sometimes whatever Legendary I get first. (Blastiose and Pidgeot, Typhlosion, Noctowl and Ho-oh, etc.) But this time, with HeartGold, is gonna be different. This time I'm gonna have a full team without Legendaries.
When I still had platinum,my team was: Gallade [my favorite, just a sweeper] Tangrowth [physical wall] Togekiss [paraflinch strategy. Not too original, but oh well.] Bronzong [lead, stealth rock and support, wall] Magnezone [Sweeper] EDIT: I forgot, I had a leafeon. [physical wall, sweeper] Porygon Z [sweeper] I liked competitive battling, so all of these were EVd and had a max stat. All of them except for leafeon were shiny, also. I always considered Ubers/Legendaries cheap, so I never used those.
Let's see, right now I have two different teams in Diamond.
This is the one that's currently in the Hall of Fame: Infernape (Abraham) Knows Flame Wheel, Rock Smash, Close Combat, and Blast Burn. Slowbro Knows Water Pulse, Zen Headbutt, Psychic, and Slack Off. Considering replacing Zen Headbutt with Trick Room, but I'm not gonna find another one of those TMs unless I get Pokémon Battle Revolution. Honchkrow (Beaker) Knows Wing Attack, Fly, Night Slash, and Dark Pulse. Roserade (Dorothy) Knows Magical Leaf, Mega Drain (should never have got rid of Giga Drain ), Petal Dance, and Hyper Beam. Magnezone (Clanker) Knows Magnet Bomb, Spark, Zap Cannon, and (I think) Screech. Golem (Roxy) Knows Rollout, Magnitude, Stone Edge, and Flamethrower.
And this is my team of HM mules that I keep around so that I can navigate Sinnoh. Toxicroak Knows Poison Jab, Rock Smash, Mud Bomb, and Sucker Punch Camerupt (Phosphoria) Knows Lava Plume, Rock Slide, Strength, and Magnitude. Fearow (Spearhead) Knows Fly, Defog, Aerial Ace, and Mirror Move. Golduck (Quackhead) Knows Waterfall, Surf, Rock Climb, and Zen Headbutt. Victreebel (Belly) Knows Razor Leaf, Acid, Wring Out, and Cut. Hypno Knows Psybeam, Hypnosis, Headbutt, and Psych Up. I use this guy to put wild Pokémon to sleep so I can catch them more easily.
All the talk of HeartGold and SoulSilver, and even a completely new generation of Pokémon, when all I really want is a decent Wii Pokémon game to give these oldies something to do...
