I do it on Levels Mushroom-1, 1-5 and 2-Fortress, getting 30k is really easy now that I've mastered the 1up trick on Mushroom-1, and the flagpoles are so easy to jump on those levels.
I'm at 778,541 now.

I've got around 35000 coins and barely touched the game. Just finished world one and a couple of the first secret world. At least this mode really makes you want to collect every single coin. In past Mario games I really didn't care as much. Specially when you get to around 99 lives.

In the area with the first Star Coin.
When you get in there, stomp the Koopa Paratroopa twice as quickly as possibly, so it retreats into its shell without going anywhere.
Then smash the second and third brick block on the top row, and the second brick block on the second row, making a tiny staircase..
As gold Mario, stand where the third block you smashed was, and wait for the Koopa to get back up. As soon as he steps off the top block and starts falling, lightly tap the jump button. Press nothing else.
If you've done it right, Mario will start jumping off the Koopa shell repeatedly, and start earning 50 coins over and over.
After about 25 jumps the Koopa shell will die. You DON'T want to let that happen, so jump off just before it perishes and leave the area, and come back to repeat the set-up (minus the block smashing)
If the Koopa Troopa does perish during the 1up trick (which only happens if you are Gold Mario by the way), it will not respawn for the rest of the level.
Basically if you can successfully pull off the 1up trick three times in Mushroom-1, you will easily get over 3300 coins. The remaining 450 you need for 3750 coins can easily be collected as you run to the flagpole, by jumping through the Gold ring and kicking the Koopa Troopa to the left so it knocks out some gold enemies in succession.
Once you have 3750 coins on stage 1, it's a matter of collecting the 2x coin multipliers at the end of each stage.
Mushroom-1 and 1-5 have very easy 2x coin multipliers, their flag poles are not difficult to triple jump into.
Fortress-2 is a guaranteed 2x coin multiplier just for defeating Reznor.

I'm on World 4 and I only have 9,800 coins. I feel like I'm doing something wrong.
I think I only earned around 13,000 on my first run through the game. Coin Rush in where you can really get a lot of coins quickly (once you beat the game first).
I just got 100,000 coins and my SP high score it 8,500

It was totally worth it... not! But it didn´t take too long either since I got over 17 000 for one Mushroom Pack very easily over and over again. Last day I noticed that you´ll get lots of coins for winning your frieds Streetpass records too. Nice.

Thanks for your help. Even after watching the video, it took me quite a few tries to finally get it right, and I got to pull off the 30,000 coin run! Now to pretend to watch everyone's imaginary faces as they try in vain to beat it after Streetpassing me!
PS: My total coin count as of right now is 239,840.
