Topic: Which version for first Majora's Mask playthrough: 3DS Version or Switch Online?

I’m torn between which version to experience for my first Majora's Mask playthrough. I did my first playthrough of Ocarina of Time on the 3DS and loved it. I recently replayed Ocarina on Switch Online with an N64 controller and found the experience really charming. The textures and settings are less polished than the 3DS version, but I loved using the N64 controller and the save states are very convenient. The Ocarina of Time 3DS remake is pretty well-regarded, but Majora's Mask is slightly less so. The reception for the Switch Online version of Majora's Mask seems quite positive. For me, I guess it comes down to authenticity (N64) versus modernized polish (3DS). I’d like to ask this forum's opinions on which version to play first and why.

I would go with the 3DS version. But that’s also the only version I’ve played through. I just really like the 3D and polished textures, I think those go a long way for a game like this

Player through both - twice the N64 version und Ince the 3ds one. I prefer the 3ds one - looks better, plays better and I love the 3D effect

Watch kingK, and the completionist . They each have pretty good reviews on the game.

I would say the 3ds version is better but that is just my opinion.

I played also both versions of majoras, on original n64 and on 3ds.Great experience of course with original but you can't go wrong with the 3ds version. Like ocarina of time 3d before have more polished graphics but the most important is one of the best uses of stereoscopic 3d. Just to see all this pop out effect on the screen and depth in this large enviroments it's an unforgettable experience that will live forever with the system and zelda titles legacy!

There's a youtube video by Nerrel that talks about the differences and why he thinks that the 3DS port is not as good. I suggest you watch it.

The original is the more authentic experience with the old save system. It basically forces you to carefully plan what you do in the 3 day cycle so the dark atmosphere hits you more. The remake is much easier partly do to quality of life improvements but to be honest you cant go wrong either way.

Guess you've made your choice now, how did it go?

I've actually been pretty busy and haven't started Majora's Mask yet. I only started Breath of the Wild for the first time in February and am working on getting near-completion before Tears of the Kingdom next year.

But I have decided to play Majora's Mask on the 3DS because I enjoy the more polished visual style and quality of life improvements.

@nib0 Can't go wrong with Majora's Mask 3d. It's much more accessible and generally more fun than the original. Good luck on getting all the shrines in BOTW. I did, but had to wipe my Switch so lost the save.

I think the art style in the 3DS remakes is generally bad, oversaturated, and too bright, and the changes to the gameplay in Majora's Mask are unforgivable.

But do play the game in some shape or form.

@nib0 The fact you've included the word 'first' makes me think you should start with the N64 version. Experience it how it originally was in it's day (but with the not-insignificant benefit of save states), and that will set you up for better acknowledging the differences the 3DS version brings.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

Omigod, I've just done the thing... you know, totally cringe... posting in a thread without realising how old it was. I could die right now.

I know this thread is old, but the best way to play is neither of these. Use the restoration mod for the 3ds version for the best of both games.

@gcunit

You weren't the one who resurrected it, so it's fine. Be relieved.

I actually just started playing Majora for the first time ever on 3DS and I'm enjoying myself. No idea what I'm doing but I'm quite impressed with what they achieved.
