Is unifying the timeline? The name could suggest that. It could aldo be the reason that they randomly released the timeline in hyrule historia right before this game. It would also explain Aonuma's comments about Majora's Mask if it tied intothat timeline (tying all 3 splits together) we know this takes place about 6 generations after lttp, but are we sure that that is before LOZ and AOL? (Im really asking the question, because i'm not sure. Linking the "worlds" could very well refer to the worlds of each timeline. Then BANG, zelda wii u comes out as the 1st game of the unified timeline, picking up where lbw leaves off.
It could also be that Nintendo doesnt actually care about some arbitrary timeline, unlike the fans - and have therefore focused more on the game than where it stands in the 'Zelda Universe'. Then again, that's just what I'm hoping to be true.
The Zelda timeline is composed of alotta "But what if..." moments. Like what if Link failed this, or what if Link did this, or what if Zelda went to that place, etc. Thats the only way I can cope with the timeline. Lol
I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

That would be kinda cool. But as @Geonjaha said, I don't think Nintendo really care about where a game fits into the timeline. Or at least they don't care about it as much as other aspects of the game like gameplay. They've always said that they make their games' stories around the gameplay. They've even said that they choose what new title in a series they're going to work on based off of what new gameplay ideas they think will work best in a certain series.
I would have to disagree, I think Nintendo is starting to focus more on the timeline, and making it make sense, fill the gaps, etc. Because when ALBW was announced I remember Iwata mentioning where it takes place in the timeline, and also noting when WW takes place in the timeline. It seemed like he was making sure people remembered the timeline, and showing that they are using it still.
Well I didn't say that they are completely ignoring it. I was just saying it's probably not as high up on their list of priorities as other parts of the game.

Nintendo cared enough about the timeline to create a huge section on it in hyrule historia. as bandg said, they are definitely starting to pay attention to it recently. Also, triforcepower73, what you're saying isn't even in response to what i said. yes, nintendo focuses more on the gameplay aspects, but the point is, this game has a story. Whether or not it's more or less important than other aspects of the development is irrelevant as this is more speculating on what the story that is in the game wil be, not what it's priority is in development compared to other aspects.
The zelda series started out not caring much about story, but that is not the case anymore whatsoever. Links awakening, Ocarina of time, Majora's mask, windwaker, and skyward sword are all examples of Nintendo putting some focus on story, and in some cases making an effort to tie the games together, like the scene in windwaker (we all know the one)
here's an interesting question: What if Zelda is the bad guy??? (I mean princess)

If the majora's mask exists in a timeline, then it probably exists in the others too. No need to mix timelines to see it.
This. I mean, they never actually stated WHEN Majora's Mask was created, just that it had supposedly wiped out a civilization. The mask's creation could easily predate the split in the timeline, meaning it would exist in all three branches (unless it gets destroyed in any of the branches).
I'm not saying that this game won't connect any of the timelines (we all know Nintendo can do whatever the heck they want to make sense of the timeline), I'm just saying Majora's Mask's appearance in another timeline is perfectly plausible without linking the timelines.

Specially considering that the mask was already an ancient relic by the time of majora's mask, which takes place shortly after ocarina of time. Which is the game where the timelines fork in three lines.
This timeline is the one where link died or failed, which means that in this timeline no one stopped Majora and Termina was destroyed by the moon. Or that never happened at all and the Mask is still looking for a weak puppet to control.
For all we know, the mask could have a big role in this game and this is nintendo's way of pleasing all three groups of fans that voted in that poll: this may be a sequel-remake of a link to the past with the majora's mask as villain.
That would be sweet.
but i still want that majora's mask remake, nintendo.
@LetsGoRetro - They were releasing a book solely about the Zelda franchise. Many fans had been drooling over the possibility of a timeline being finally revealed after oh so much speculation. Why would Nintendo not make up a timeline at that point just to appease the masses and raise sales? It has been said many times that apart from direct sequels the franchise was never intended to be based on a strict timeline.
Sure, maybe now they'll reference their other games a bit more in new entries - but thats never been what made the series, and is only there now because of a fanbase that for some reason feels connectivity between games that are all essentially the same is essential.
The only way the timeline of all the games makes sense is if you entertain the thought of several different alternate universes, but at that point, it's not much of a timeline at all. It's a series of standalone stories that sometimes connect to one or two other games in the series, but not necessarily, and it isn't important anyway.
The need for fans to make this all one big jumbled mess of a timeline is even worse than casual Bond fans that insist that "James Bond" is a codename and not an actual person.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
I'm not even a big timeline person, but I understand it undoubtedly exists. Why, because Nintendo said so.
It's their IP, and their word is, and always will be, final. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. No one other than them has the authority to decide such things.
Heck, if they come out tomorrow & say that the entire series has been a hallucination by Mario eating a bad mushroom, than that immediately becomes true. Their word is final, & that's that.
