Here is the huge important things.
Before update = Villagers will moving out after 5 days.
After update = Villagers will moving out after 10 days, if you summon the 50 returning villagers from new Amiibo card they will not moving out whatsoever unless if you kick them by another Amiibo card villager.

Also...
Before update = No house arrangement like HHD, No Extra storage upgrade.
After update = You got the things above.

You have to update your ACNL as you will unable to play Online if your ACNL is still old version.

You still get huge new things by updating your ACNL, even you play the game Offline.
Your old version of ACNL will not get compatible with other player island if they have updated into Welcome Amiibo version and if you want to play Online.

Welcome Amiibo does add a respectable amount of good and unobtrusive content. Is there any specific reason you have against updating?

If you leave your ACNL without getting updated, you will unable to get the returning 50 villagers from previous animal Crossing and you completely miss tons of exclusive furniture so and items from returning 50 villagers. You cannot summon the six exclusive Sanrio villagers from Sanrio Amiibo cards.
Also, your villagers will moving out by 5 days for old version, not by 10 days.
I have played ACNL a lot so I knew the trivial things like that.

Oh, BTW.
When you have downloaded the Welcome Amiibo update from eshop, it will be stored inside micro SD card and every old version of ACNL cartridge you inserted it will be loaded with update inside your machine so you will play old version ACNL with the update.
And if you already overwrite your old version ACNL cartridge from 3DS machine that have Welcome Amiibo update on it, then you inserted into another 3DS without Welcome Amiibo update, the things from Welcome Amiibo update inside your old version ACNL cartridge will be disappeared and may risk your save data.

My advice, update your ACNL and everything will be fine.
