I did use the pause/unpause trick, but only for the Rock Monster and then Wily himself.
Wily is very easy with Fire Man's weapon at close range. No select trick needed here. The rotating fireball around Mega Man can hit the Wily Machine's weak point multiple times. If you entered the battle with full energy, and you keep spamming Fire Man's weapon nonstop right in Wily's face, he will go down first.
Failed my no death run...but I did make it to the Wily Machine without dying. Unfortunately Guts Man wore me down pretty bad...his rematch room makes him pretty difficult to avoid. Regardless, I did pretty well I think!

Thanks! Since my previous post, I have been able to beat Wily without the trick, using a mix of Fire and Elec. You are definitely right that Fire does a number on him. I'll try it for the whole fight next time. (Have not yet been able to beat the Rock Monster without the trick though...)

Jump and throw a bomb (from right by the entrance); jump over his attack; throw a second bomb; (possibly jump a second attack); throw a third bomb. I almost never get hit by him.
Regardless though, super impressive that you made it no-death to Wily!
Yeah than I can get a proper Megaman game on the 3DS instead of having that awful Dr Wily's Revenge game. Although I would rather see them bring out the GB version of MM2 cause the sooner we get those the sooner we can get MMV on GB.
Personally, I prefer Dr. Wily's Revenge to the original NES game. And Mega Man 2 on the Game Boy is generally considered the worst of the five Game Boy games.
By MM standards it's not as good, but as a video game it's OK, even the music is good for a game boy game (Though it's un mega man like and is VERY high pitched)

Surprising no-one, I'll be getting every Mega Man game regardless of where else I already have them.
Powered Up would be awesome, but it's a vastly different experience from the NES game anyway, so it's worth owning both!
Powered Up contains the original NES game too.
you mean the "original mode"? yes, but some details are already tweaked differently (aside from its 2.5D graphics), like how megaman jumps, and other enemies' movements, and stages layout... it is only noticeable if you really intent to notice it... i noticed these differences because i've been playing mega man 1 (NES) on my 3ds lately, and wanted to play Megaman Powered Up on my psp just to compare difference...
anyway speaking of megaman 1 (NES), a friend of mine just gave a tip for this game awhile ago which i didn't knew before....
by repeatedly pressing the "select" button during firing, your attack can ignore "invincibility frames"(blinking) of the enemy, i tried it by finishing elecman using only 1 fire of cutman's weapon... awesome! i might try it for the yellow devil... though this tip/technique is pretty cheap IMO XD
