I don't expect I'll have much use for StreetPass/SpotPass in my small town in Norway. Still, we've got three schools, so I'll probably bump into at least some kids with a 3DS eventually. Better than nothing, but those features aren't exactly why I'm getting a 3DS, anyway.
While you can use AT&T's hotspots for online gaming, I'm pretty sure spotpass is about downloading updates, information, etc while the system is in sleep mode.

the problem with alot of wirless network at coffe shop etc is they have a secure connection(i mean if they don't there kinda stupid) that means you can only get on when they say you can. the only time i've seen a public place not block thier network was at a libary and even if you can find a place they will likely be to many ppl there and it cause your online to lag or even dc you randomly

It would be really cool if spot-pass worked in a moving vehicle. One only knows how many connections could be made. One thing's for certain though, the address books would fill up rather quickly!

I have heard of some cars with built in wifi hotspots, so that idea isn't as crazy as it sounds.
Well, the closest you can get with 3G gaming on the go for the 3DS is to subscribe to Sprint's Wi-Fi adapter they were marketing. Even had the DS in their commercial, playing online and camping (though, it was somewhat misleading as 6 players cannot play online together in MKDS- but who knows if the others were MKDS or whatever).
I'm going to look into tethering my cell phone so it can be a personal 'hotspot' while I'm on the go.
Something that's been bothering me is the legality of SpotPass. It's against the law to use someone's wireless connection without their permission even if it's not password protected, but if the 3DS does this automatically without my even trying to steal Internet access from someone, am I breaking the law?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Spot Pass like Wii Connect 24? And that means auto-updates and such, I think most everyone is going to use it unintentionally. As for the Wi-fi legality thing, I don't think that's true. If you fail to password protect your internet, well then people can use it all they want, you're saying, sure, you can use it. I can see it being illegal if you hacked in, but if there's no password, well tough cookies for the owner.

When I saw that commercial, I wondered why on earth they even needed internet when it appeared that they were playing wireless multiplayer. Ah well.
Yeeeeaaah spot pass is pretty much what @nmozdzier said. You leave it alone and it auto downloads and auto updates, thing of this matter. So under no circumstances is spotpass a joke. Now street pass....thats a different story for alot of people.
