OMG! I love this game! Easily one of my old favorites. When I was a kid and this was out (which makes me older than most of you probably) this game was known as Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and Mike Tyson was in the game and on the box cover art and his name was featured prominently throughout the game and mostly for its promotion at the time. Even in the arcades it was Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! and you were Little Mac (still). Perfect game! I hope that many of you young kids get to enjoy this game like I did back in the day! So many wonderful characters, opponents, and skills you have to learn to defeat each and every fighter you come up against. I am still fond of the Hippo guy wearing the diaper, myself. And Piston Honda.. I love that name. 10/10

Don't own it yet but I've played it few times (last time being today). I can't get past Great Tiger. His special move is too hard to counter/dodge. I'm going to figure out how to beat him when I get this game.

Check out my Gaming Nonograms thread here on Nintendo Life if you are into Picross or other similar games.

It's one of my favourite games ever, but I can't bring myself to rebuy it after already buying Mike Tyson's Punch-Out when it came out and then Punch-Out on Wii VC. I was really hoping for a 3D Classics version on the 3DS. I guess now I'll have to cross my fingers for a new 3DS Punch-Out game to be made.

@Late: When the Great Tiger backs off from you and squats down than disappears all you have to do is stand there and block while he circles you. IIRC you have to block about 4 to 5 times during his mirage dance. Once you block all of them he will be stunned and you can just pop him in the kisser.

@Iphys: I feel the same way except I only own it on the Wii VC. If Club Nintendo were to offer this for coins and its the best choice of the games they offer for that month than I will probably pick it up.

There are lots of different blocking/punching combos that each fighter demonstrates. Find their particular pattern or style of fighting and save up to that point, since you're using 3DS VC you can simply 'save' the game at that point and then keep experimenting and restarting your earlier saved sessions. In the old days, we didn't have this feature, and you had to work your way up through all the fighters again. Argh. Thank God for 3DS VC! I just fought and beat King Hippo, btw. He's a tough one, too.

The game was called Mike Tyson's Punch Out, however you never get the choice to play as Tyson himself.

Yeah, I always thought that was funny. lol. I wonder what kind of legal-wrangling ensued because of the use of his name in the game? Apparently Nintendo either lost a potential lawsuit because of the name or the 'contract' ran out and they had planned on re-naming the game? Anyone know?

The latter. The licensing ccontract with Tyson (a fairly short-term licensing deal) expired, but since the game was so popular, they just re-released it without his likeness.

Great timing, too. I remember (in the 90's) Tyson was involved in some huge legal troubles with his then ex-wife who accused him of beating her. That would have been really BAD PR for this game!

From what I read somewhere is that Punch Out!! Was a huge hit in arcades in Japan in the US however not so much. In order to make Punch Out!! more marktetable to America audiences when it came to the NES they made short term license with Iron Mike who at the time was one of the biggest names in sports let alone boxing. That way more people were inclined to try it out since Iron Mike endorsed it.

Anyone got any Piston Honda tips?

It shouldn't be too hard to dodge his normal moves - he flashes and raises his eyebrows, and goes into a special position for an uppercut! When he does his special move, hit him when he comes down - if you're timing's right it'll blow him down to the ground!

I just got and played this game for the first time yesterday. Right now I can't get past Bald Bull. I haven't used any tutorials at all (except for Don Flamenco - I had beaten him easily before but I read a way to beat him way faster), or the 3DS VC save feature, and I'm not gonna start!

grumblegrumble

Bald Bull is a tough one. His attacks get much more intense when you play him again later on. You can only knock him down with a Star Punch in the later modes, he will very leniently give you a star if you defend yourself properly. Good luck!!

Super Punch-Out!! (1994)

In the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!, Gabby Jay is the weakest opponent in the game. The story behind him is that he was born in Paris, France, and originally worked as a waiter in a cafe near the Eiffel Tower, before he somehow felt the need to take up boxing. His only win was against Glass Joe, according to the SNES Super Punch-Out!!'s instruction booklet (which earned him a diploma from the "Glass Joe School of Boxing"). Like Glass Joe, Gabby's signature move is the 'Taunt Punch', which he jumps away from his opponent, shouts "C'mon!!" twice, jumps slowly toward his opponent and throws a punch. He will also shout "Yay!" sometimes, which allows him to recover half of his health. Gabby Jay's offensive and defensive skills are also poor, which takes quite a while to throw any punch. He wears grey boxing gloves, and his palette swap is Bob Charlie. He will shout "Yay!" three times should he be able to win.

Instant KDs
When Gabby Jay shouts "C'mon!!", hit him before he returns to the centre.
When Gabby Jay moves to the left or right after his corner man tells him to stop attacking, hit him in the opposite direction to the direction he moves.

Quotes
"Let me win. I've lost so many times I forgot how winning feels." (first match)
"I like winning! Keep challenging me, it's good for my ego." (rematch)
"I'll never retire! I can win at least once more. C'mon!!" (endgame)
"Yay!"
"C'mon!!"
Yay! Yay! Yay! (Victory)

@Jumbif - I was referring to the 2nd bout with Piston Honda; I've been stuck on his second form so long I actually forgot there was a first fight with him!

Exactly.
