OMG! I love this game! Easily one of my old favorites. When I was a kid and this was out (which makes me older than most of you probably) this game was known as Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and Mike Tyson was in the game and on the box cover art and his name was featured prominently throughout the game and mostly for its promotion at the time. Even in the arcades it was Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! and you were Little Mac (still). Perfect game! I hope that many of you young kids get to enjoy this game like I did back in the day! So many wonderful characters, opponents, and skills you have to learn to defeat each and every fighter you come up against. I am still fond of the Hippo guy wearing the diaper, myself. And Piston Honda.. I love that name. 10/10

Don't own it yet but I've played it few times (last time being today). I can't get past Great Tiger. His special move is too hard to counter/dodge. I'm going to figure out how to beat him when I get this game.
It's one of my favourite games ever, but I can't bring myself to rebuy it after already buying Mike Tyson's Punch-Out when it came out and then Punch-Out on Wii VC. I was really hoping for a 3D Classics version on the 3DS. I guess now I'll have to cross my fingers for a new 3DS Punch-Out game to be made.
@Late: When the Great Tiger backs off from you and squats down than disappears all you have to do is stand there and block while he circles you. IIRC you have to block about 4 to 5 times during his mirage dance. Once you block all of them he will be stunned and you can just pop him in the kisser.
@Iphys: I feel the same way except I only own it on the Wii VC. If Club Nintendo were to offer this for coins and its the best choice of the games they offer for that month than I will probably pick it up.

There are lots of different blocking/punching combos that each fighter demonstrates. Find their particular pattern or style of fighting and save up to that point, since you're using 3DS VC you can simply 'save' the game at that point and then keep experimenting and restarting your earlier saved sessions. In the old days, we didn't have this feature, and you had to work your way up through all the fighters again. Argh. Thank God for 3DS VC! I just fought and beat King Hippo, btw. He's a tough one, too.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! consists of three circuits and the final dream bout against the titular boxer. Each opponent is more difficult than the last; the boxers who Little Mac rematch later are significantly more difficult than their initial bout.
Minor Circuit
Glass Joe is the series' infamous pushover, allowing you to initiate most of the contact both to the head and to the body at the outset of the fight. Glass Joe gets cocky if you haven't knocked him down within the first minute or so, backing off and taunting you. Of course, knocking him into oblivion once he steps forward again shows him who's boss.
Von Kaiser appears more capable than his predecessor, but can in fact be floored more easily. His jab can be countered with a blow to his (wiggling) head before the blow ever arrives, and in many cases a Star is awarded. Dodging whatever he throws your way and hitting him just once renders him vulnerable to a one-hit knockdown from a star punch. It's a wonder he's won more fights than Glass Joe throughout his career.
Piston Honda lets his guard down enough to be tagged with an aggressive surprise jab, but he nevertheless presents the first challenge during which you'll understand the dodge-respond mechanic upon which the bulk of the game is founded. Happily, he also gives you the first glimpse at a fancy dance that leaves him vulnerable to a one-hit knockdown--from a normal punch, no less--if you know just when to hit him.
Major Circuit
Don Flamenco is hands-down the easiest fighter to provoke, and while he doesn't go down nearly as quickly as some of his pushover predecessors, the technique for defeating him is the easiest to initiate. After all, how hard can a fight be when every jab is countered with a block, and then an uppercut that (if dodged) lets you counter with up to and potentially over ten punches in a row?
Once the portly King Hippo is down, he's out for good. The key is not mistaking his normal punch for his special blow, the latter of which you must counter, and the former of which results in a guaranteed block--and hence, a guaranteed lost heart.
Great Tiger cheats with magic trickery, plain and simple, by teleporting around the ring and surprising you with a hefty jab. However, this sequence is easy to read and block--and should you send him into his uppercut pattern, cracking him a solid one in the stomach the instant he crouches to throw the uppercut is a guaranteed star.
Bald Bull's jab and uppercut are quick as lightning, and his bull charge sends you to the mat in one shot. The first time around, though, it's easy to counter as long as you can count along with his hops and land a good one right after the three-count. When he returns, though... it's a different story.
World Circuit
Piston Honda comes back quicker and more powerful than ever. And yet, you might be able to knock him out even quicker than you did in the past. That little flimsy dance he does is cut in half, but if you hit him with precise timing, not only is he knocked down, chances are that he's also knocked out for a full ten count. If you whiff the punch, though, just make sure that you know about the barrage coming your way.
Soda Popinski waits, shuffles, waits some more, and then pops you a good hook or uppercut when you psych yourself out into dodging too early...or not dodging at all. His uppercut is insanely quick, and you'd have to be a robot to read his sucker punch jab. He's the first true jerk in the game.
You can't knock Bald Bull down this time around without using a star punch or stopping his bull charge. The fact that he lulls you to sleep before his charge by waiting an unspecified amount of time, though, ups the "jerk" meter on this guy upon his return. Let's not forget the "half" charge, in which he only bounces back to the middle of the ring--forcing you to re-learn the appropriate timing.
Don Flamenco is far more difficult to provoke this time around, and his jab is quick enough to reach sucker-punch status. In fact, everything about him is quicker, harder, and nastier.
Mr. Sandman's special technique is insanely difficult to dodge: three instant uppercuts with no wind-up animation. He can take a hell of a whole lot of hits to the body, too, and you'll need to counter-punch with the right fist after dodging his hook if you want to even hit him.
Super Macho Man flexes his pecs. That's pretty much all you need to know. Well, that, and the fact that he's a slightly slower version of Soda Popinski. His Spin Punch, however, keeps him from being all that familiar and easy. It will most certainly exercise your ability to double-tap on down, as ducking is the only way to dodge this mess of one- to two-hit knockdown swings.
Dream Bout
For the first ninety seconds of the Mike Tyson ( Mr. Dream) fight, he unleashes a barrage of uppercuts that will all be one punch knockdowns. It is possible to counter them, but most tend to simply learn the timing and dodge them. After that, it is a battle of landing a few punches for the remainder of the first and two rounds until you can finally TKO him in the third round.
Trivia!!
After Nintendo's license with Mike Tyson ran out, Nintendo re-released Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! as "Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream" in 1990. Other than the cosmetic change from Mike Tyson to Mr. Dream, the two games were identical.
In the original arcade release of Punch-Out!!, Soda Popinski was named Vodka Drunkenski. The name was changed to avoid the stereotype that all Russians get drunk on vodka, or to avoid advocating alcohol consumption in an effort to preserve Nintendo's family-friendly reputation.
Mario was added as the referee in the NES version to cater to established Mario fans. Speech bubbles also replaced voice samples for Mario to save space on the cartridge.

The game was called Mike Tyson's Punch Out, however you never get the choice to play as Tyson himself.
Yeah, I always thought that was funny. lol. I wonder what kind of legal-wrangling ensued because of the use of his name in the game? Apparently Nintendo either lost a potential lawsuit because of the name or the 'contract' ran out and they had planned on re-naming the game? Anyone know?

The latter. The licensing ccontract with Tyson (a fairly short-term licensing deal) expired, but since the game was so popular, they just re-released it without his likeness.

Great timing, too. I remember (in the 90's) Tyson was involved in some huge legal troubles with his then ex-wife who accused him of beating her. That would have been really BAD PR for this game!

From what I read somewhere is that Punch Out!! Was a huge hit in arcades in Japan in the US however not so much. In order to make Punch Out!! more marktetable to America audiences when it came to the NES they made short term license with Iron Mike who at the time was one of the biggest names in sports let alone boxing. That way more people were inclined to try it out since Iron Mike endorsed it.

don flaminco is actually very easy first time round. all you need to do is provoke him into an upper cut, then pound his face repeatedly, if you can get the timing right, you can give don a nonstop face beating until he drops for the count, in some cases for the full 10. you need to go slowley at first then build up speed towards the end of his life bar. king hippo gives an obvious oppening by raising his arm and opening his mouth. this is the only oppening you get to go for an atrack. one jab to the face, the punch him in the gutts. mr dream you need to be mega quick and watch for every twitch before he throws a punch. don`t knock him down in the first round, take his life bar down to where you can get a quick knock down in the second, a second round tko is possible but difficult with this tactic.
It shouldn't be too hard to dodge his normal moves - he flashes and raises his eyebrows, and goes into a special position for an uppercut! When he does his special move, hit him when he comes down - if you're timing's right it'll blow him down to the ground!
I just got and played this game for the first time yesterday. Right now I can't get past Bald Bull. I haven't used any tutorials at all (except for Don Flamenco - I had beaten him easily before but I read a way to beat him way faster), or the 3DS VC save feature, and I'm not gonna start!
Bald Bull is a tough one. His attacks get much more intense when you play him again later on. You can only knock him down with a Star Punch in the later modes, he will very leniently give you a star if you defend yourself properly. Good luck!!

In the SNES version of Super Punch-Out!!, Gabby Jay is the weakest opponent in the game. The story behind him is that he was born in Paris, France, and originally worked as a waiter in a cafe near the Eiffel Tower, before he somehow felt the need to take up boxing. His only win was against Glass Joe, according to the SNES Super Punch-Out!!'s instruction booklet (which earned him a diploma from the "Glass Joe School of Boxing"). Like Glass Joe, Gabby's signature move is the 'Taunt Punch', which he jumps away from his opponent, shouts "C'mon!!" twice, jumps slowly toward his opponent and throws a punch. He will also shout "Yay!" sometimes, which allows him to recover half of his health. Gabby Jay's offensive and defensive skills are also poor, which takes quite a while to throw any punch. He wears grey boxing gloves, and his palette swap is Bob Charlie. He will shout "Yay!" three times should he be able to win.
Instant KDs When Gabby Jay shouts "C'mon!!", hit him before he returns to the centre. When Gabby Jay moves to the left or right after his corner man tells him to stop attacking, hit him in the opposite direction to the direction he moves.
Quotes "Let me win. I've lost so many times I forgot how winning feels." (first match) "I like winning! Keep challenging me, it's good for my ego." (rematch) "I'll never retire! I can win at least once more. C'mon!!" (endgame) "Yay!" "C'mon!!" Yay! Yay! Yay! (Victory)

@Jumbif - I was referring to the 2nd bout with Piston Honda; I've been stuck on his second form so long I actually forgot there was a first fight with him!
