I have been waiting on this. Let the sunset come. The 3ds is a fantastic system and I suspect between leftover projects and localization it will see support until early 2019. However I am happy that in starting the hardware consolidation process devs will have to start migrating. Hopefully that means many of the 3ds only devs will start putting out games with the same level of fun but taking advantage of the graphical power of the switch. Could you imagine a story of seasons game that looks like pikmin 3? I can only hope.

@Octane Well of course. Gamers are cheap and the n2ds offers a budget price with a HUGE established library. However devs are going to want to start moving on or at least trying to release dual releases (like with FE heroes) when they can. I'm not expecting a Wii/Wiiu drop off. Rather, a gradual but still inevitable sunset.

Actually, only the standard sized version of the New 3DS is discontinued, not the 3DS family as a whole. It's good that they're not snubbing a user-base of over 60 million just because a new system that alot of people that can't get no matter how much they want one just released.

This. It's a crying shame that this was never properly released in North America. I would love to upgrade from my OG 3DS, and this would have been my choice.
Now I may have to decide between the New 2DS and 3DS XLs....Ugh.

I thought they were going to make a clam-shell standard size New 2DS to replace 2013's 2DS and then market the New 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 2DS XL, and New 2DS alongside each-other. But it looks like they'll be marketing the New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL, and the regular ol' 2DS alongside each other instead, meaning there will be more choices for the 2DS than 3DS.

This. Considering that both the 3DS and the Switch can exist wihtout affecting the other, I don't see why many have the need to kill the 3DS. Nintendo already invests the resources they want on the Switch and I don't think they wouldn't risk much more even if it's the only one they produce. Also, I don't know about other countries, but here the Switch costs the equivalent of 500 dollars, which is insane. The market that the 3DS covers are the people that don't have access to the Switch or that won't buy a console that is so expensive at the moment and doesn't offer the games they want. Personally, I prefer to focus on completing my 3DS library (40 games counting digital and I still miss a bunch) and wait for the Switch to have more games to offer me, since my PS4 also gives me a lot more reasons to invest on it. BOTW looks great, but I'm not that much of a Zelda fan and I'll be waiting until Metroid Prime 4 arrives.
I don't see the lack of Switch to cover the demand as negative as some, since the production will eventually cover that demand as it starts decreasing in the next months until Odyssey arrives and then it will happen again. Right now Splatoon 2 was what increased the demand so much and there's no alternative to the Switch if you want to play it, so I see little risk of losing potential costumers while they wait for week or maybe a month. Managing distribution better would also help this, since the Switch is found everywhere in some regions because demand there isn't as strong as in other places.
Also, the Switch does need more support but from developers, and that will change with it's success and the approach Nintendo takes with the supporters that take the risk, with or without the existance of the 3DS.
