Fun game, but it felt too short. I couldn't put it down and beat it in two play sessions: one during the evening, and the other during the next morning. It's the best non-Metroid/Castlevania Metroidvania since Shantae.

Too short? You must have rushed through it, no? It took a good 8 hours which is pretty good for a 9€ download

I'm just too addicted to this at the momment. I go exploring and forget the objectives when I see I've played more than 2 hours..... great game I normally find hard to get into new sidescrollers, this one was different and fun!

goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

Rushed? I accessed all of the rooms, maxed out the vast majority of the upgrade options, and left no significant area of soil untouched. Took me about 6 1/2 hours, all in all.

I wasn't arguing that it was a bad value, just that it felt very short to me. I think a big part of that is that it is missing the environmental puzzle elements that often slow me down in Metroidvania titles. Also, very little backtracking. Moreover, the game is absurdly easy.

Ugh. Men.

Moreover, the game is absurdly easy.

I can't disagree with that. It's an epic game, but as long as you just dig straight down, avoid enemies as much as possible, stock up on teleports and upgrades, you could easily beat this in 3-4 hours.

but then the fun of digging and exploring would be lost

Okay, I've played through this four times now. I'm giving up on getting gold medals in all four categories though...at least for now. I just finished a game where I got gold medals in Money (somewhere over 21K), Orbs (190), and Deaths (0 total), yet I only got a silver for beating the game in 3 hours and 5 minutes. I assume that anything under 3 hours would give me a gold medal, so it's annoying that I was so close. I'm most proud of that 0 deaths while having to zoom through the game so quickly.

My first playthrough netted me 2 gold medals (money, orbs) and two bronzes. My second I somehow got all 4 silvers, finishing the game in 4 hours, but I skipped a lot of the ore/orbs because I was going for time.

I really enjoyed this game, and I'd love a sequel, even if the gameplay was virtually the same. All we'd need is some brand new mines and power-up rooms to explore.

Really awesome game, so if you start a new file the world will be different from the world on the other file?

Yes. The smaller caves/areas where you get powerups and stuff stay the same, but the dig site itself is randomly generated with each file.

I've played through it five times now; it's a great game to mess around with while watching TV or something. I haven't achieved four gold stars on a single file, though I have managed one per category. I managed to beat this in 2:37 with no deaths, but didn't gather enough money to get straight golds. Oh well.

I would love to see a sequel, even if the gameplay was the same.

SPOILER
The ending lends itself easily to setting up a sequel using one of the other robots. Forgot the female robot's name...Dot? Anyway, she could go on a search for Rusty and get powerups, too. I wouldn't care if it was basically the same game, as long as the gameplay remains virtually the same I'd be happy.

I would like it if the was DLC for the game in which you can play as her with a new story, but she will be disappointed that she won't be able to find him since he left town.

I had totally forgotten about this thread! Well, to sum it up - IGN, Gamasutra and a slew of other prominent (and less prominent) sites have decided that SteamWorld Dig is one of the best games of 2013. It's amazing, as is this - this feeling of speaking into the void in an almost-terminated thread on Nintendo Life. I could probably write just about anything here, for example what the next SteamWorld game will be called, when it's coming out and for what platforms. But I won't bore you with that, I'll just mention that we at Image & Form love you all. More to come.

@imageform At first i felt like all i was doing was digging my own grave! I was definitely playing the game wrong and it wasn't fun for me. So i stop playing thinking the game was boring and just mindless digging. A friend got me back into it because he kept telling me how good it was. Now i've seen the error of my ways and sing the praises of this game! Best eshop game to date and i've played quite a few of them! I hope you've earned a bunch of money off this so we can get an even better longer game! Keep up the great work!
