Hey guys. I'm a "beginner" at MH (just hit about 50 hours). I've been playing mostly Caravan quests, and now on the Caravan 9* to 10* urgent quest. Anyway, I got a little frustrated with the game, later followed by confusion, and I was hoping that you guys might have some insight for me. Quick Summary: Low/High Rank Caravan (and Guildhall?) Quests are pointless since Equipment skill/stats don't matter (and low drop rates cause frustration). Why does the game not just start at G-rank?

My rant:
First, the frustration. Basically, I played until Caravan 9* using the low-rank Tetsucabra armor and I decided it was time to upgrade. I liked the look and stats of the Monoblos armor so I set out to make that set (you know where this is going). I need a single Monoblos Heart for the chest piece (4% carve, 4% shiney). I killed the Monoblos 15 times and didn't get a single Monoblos Heart, so I did a lot of reading online, about restarting the game to reset tables, about how people try forever but then finally get it after 20 trys, about the "desire sensor" screwing you over. Anyway, now I am 30 hunts in and still no Heart. That's 4 carves + ~1 Shiny each hunt = 150 chances at a 4% drop rate. So I should expect have 6 of these things, but I have 0. So, I moved on.

Second, the confusion. Good thing I moved on because I quickly realized that Monoblos armor is simply "ok" and I was just wasting my time. Shortly after this quest, other armor sets become available., which seem better, and seem to have easier drop rates.

***So, what is the point of having low-carve rate items on Low/High Rank Monsters???It makes no sense to farm for these items because the resulting equipment is not worth effort. Since the equipment is not even that great, maybe Capcom could improve the drop rates (although, maybe they have already compared to previous iterations of MH). Also, maybe actually trying to build an armor set was my mistake since I am a beginner to the MH series. Since I could run through the entire Caravan Quest series without grinding for armor, then I should have just done that.

But, if a complete beginner can just beat the entire Caravan Quest series without actually grinding for armor, ***what is the point of even having this line of quests at all? For 50 hours, there was no strategy involved in picking out skills/stats. So, why have the game just skip straight to G-Rank quests?

And, now Monster Hunter Generations is coming out. But I've already sunk 50 (mostly enjoyable) hours into MH4U and I still haven't gotten to the "real" game (I'm just assuming that the Guild Quests and G rank will actually be hard but who knows). So, I actually don't have much incentive to pick up a new game just to repeat this low-rank process once again. Plus, it seems like the same monsters are mostly recycled into the next version with some new weapons and small changes. So, when Generations comes out, everyone is going to have to go through this same unsatisying low-rank process again just to get to the part of the game where strategy matters.

Yes, I finally defeated that high rank Silver Rathalos solo. It was an intense battle with over 40 minutes passed, and with 1 carting.

I took a long time battling Kirin to grind the Azure Bolt Thunder Insect Glaive which I used to defeat Silver Rath. I was aiming for the next upgrade, Verdant Levin, and I grinded the Kirin map to Lv 30 to get the correct parts only to discover that I needed to be HR 8 before I could battle high rank Kirin.

Anyway, now that's done, I'll have high rank Gold Rathian to deal with another day. Hopefully I won't find that one to be as hard.

Anyway, thanks for all the support and advice here.

Edit: Gold Rathian is also destroyed, but that also took me a lot of tries. Next up is Silver and Gold Rath together. They'll have to start off very weak in order for me to have any chance. I might look into a new armour set, though I think that'll only give me a slight improvement until I can reach G rank.

Wow that's a big rant. I'm replying late but hopefully I help.

Actually the thing about restarting to change the table is a thing for MH3U, where the charm tables had a bug where they locked you into a specific one without it changing throughout your save. MH4U changes your table every boot, so no need to worry about that.

Monster Hunter is a game where the skills of the player matter more than the armor skills. The latter are there to make your hunts go better, and more efficiently. It's not necessary to have any, although expect huge hunts without a good skill setup in the late game. Low/High rank are passable without a great skill set as you said, but it becomes very necessary for G.

And the game doesn't start at G-rank because it is absolutely ruthless. Low and High rank progression is mainly to introduce the monsters with increasing difficulty as you get used to them. Plus one of the allures of G-rank is reaching it after beating the lower ranks, only to get yourself whooped by the brutal G monsters. There would be no point in having a mode where monsters are brutal if the game itself starts from there. Or if G rank was the start, we'd probably have some other ranks above that xD

The weapon upgrading with the extreme rare items (1-3% drop rate) have always been an annoying factor in the games, I'll admit to that. They do lead to unhealthy grind, but with a good group and proper quest selection, it is possible to obtain them without too much effort. As @DarthNocturnal said, that is changing in Generations.

I don't mind going throw the Low rank or High Rank, I mostly mind the super monotonous, but "traditional", egg quests.

Going through the ranks in Generations would be quite different from 4U, as combat is quite spiced up in Generations. So I won't say that it will be boring.

Actually, G rank isn't in Generations.

Also, monster drops / carves are different. It's scaling down on the grinding by a fair bit. From the MH Wiki:

"Weapon upgrading has been revamped. Instead of requiring a specific list of items needed to upgrade, any sort of item in a category listed in the upgrade can be used, drastically reducing the need to grind for a rare specific item. Weapons now have levels that raise attack and elemental attack when raised, and accumulating enough levels will upgrade the weapon. Higher rarity items accumulates more level experience. Armors also now use the new level system."

wow, I'm...actually disappointed by that new level system. And it's the most confusing feeling - There's no reason that shouldn't be considered an improvement, but I just can't shake the feeling that such a system simply cheapens the experience, putting it closer to the category of every other Action-RPG on the market...as frustrating as it is to have to grind for rare drops, it at least meant something. Also, I believe there are ways to increase getting certain drops, right? What better incentive is there to play well?

...Oh well, I guess having fun is what's most important.

I'm an idiot. I've been spent so much time trying to beat high rank Silver Rathalos and Gold Rathian recently, but it turns out that these aren't required to at all to unlock G rank. Instead, I only need to do a few "Advanced" quests to get out of HR 7. I've been assuming that "Advanced" quests were always optional, and that I had to beat most non-advanced quests.

There's no way I'll be able to do the Sinister Astronomy quest now which involves battling both Raths, so I'll skip it until I'm very far into G rank.

Thank you for the replies. I appreciate the insight from MH veterans. It just feels like this game has 80+ hour "introduction." Of course, this is still fun, and there are still new monsters, and I haven't tried more than a handful of weapons. So, not boring. But I just wish that armor/gear actually mattered earlier in the game, so that a successful hunt and getting those carves had more meaning. Maybe this is because I am more of a strategy gamer than an action gamer.

I'm glad that they are revamping the Equipment system for MHGen (I watched the live E3 demo and put it on pre-order). It was It's just terrible to have such low drop rates for "intro" gear.

Anyway, I got a little into the online play which was fun. And I solo'd some HR1/2 quests easy peasy. Will I need to wait until G rank before hunts actually require equipment strategy? Or maybe in a group it still doesn't matter. But, I'm definitely going to want to try out the G-Rank experience before trying MHGen.

@CanisWolfred
I agree with you. But I also think that grinding for equipment only makes sense if the equipment is highly useful (which may be the case for G-Rank equipment, but certainly not for low/high rank equipment). It is rewarding to spend hours to create a new set of armor to defeat a G-rank Monster that was unbeatable before. But it is frustrating to grind for 10 hours and still not complete a high rank armor set that is totally not necessary to beat any monster and that is easily surpassed by other equipment easily obtainable within 1-2 hours of play (I learned my lesson).

So, hopefully the MHGen changes make it easy to acquire low/regular equipment sets, but still involves some level of accomplishment to achieve top-tier equipment.

Well usually one's better off having an easy to make Low Rank equipment with a few decent skill like Attack Up eg. Ioprey or Jaggi armour, and one decent high rank armour to go through the upper quests of HR and the lower quests of G rank.

And equipment strategy definitely matters in a group. You don't want to be the one triple carting, or weighing the team down with a sub-par setup.

Oh and I tried the Generations demo, quite interesting. Although I guess combat is less bombastic then I thought since arts take time to recharge, and I don't know how much damage they dealt -_- Guild style would be most comfortable haha. Aerial Style is cool and confusing, and Striker Style is old school combat (Monster Hunter 1/Freedom) but with the option of three arts. Didn't try Adept yet. Loved the new music though and the two new monsters were quite different.

Which character do you usually go for anyways? Since I'll probably stick with Megumi in Generations. We need more anime girl characters in Monster Hunter. xD
