Tried my new bomb SnS set on level 129 Shagaru and that thing refused to die. Guess I'll have to go elemental.
Edit: It does wonders against non OP monsters though.
Well, Shaggy is fairly resistant to blast, it only does half normal damage, (100-120)... So even though you have a fairly quick hitter like sword and board, and even if it 'coats' fairly fast, its not doing much... Quite a few of my normal switch axe attacks generally do around as much or more damage than when your blast activates...
Lets see my praying dalamadur (Yeah, I honed it for even more extra defense, not damage, no regrets, when you manage to avoid 99% of an onslought, the one time you get caught with your pants down you dont want to be an instakill ) has a raw of 1680, which translates through the BS filter as 300 actual damage (Im not even going into my power charms and talons attack up blah blah blee blah... And just normal sharpnes, even though mine is purple.. I'm lazy)
So my overhead swing is a 40% which gets me 120 damage. My round the world (God bless this move, and how fast you can pull it out of your butt, and its stupid op 360 range, and how it can hit twice and how dang cool it looks when you land the finishing blow on a monster in the face with it) and my double sword slash is 84+108 (enemy defense is applied for each swing though, to bad this switch axe isnt a power file)...
One of the reasons Iove the switch axe is because of its versatility, and it extends past the moveset, lazy bums like me can easily have one or two any situation switch axes which work universally well on all enemies, because the raw damage, attack speed, combo-ability, and almost anytime evasion goes together so well. I Rarely ever need to change out switch axes if I don't want to. I can totally take an element type ax against a monster who is completely resistant to that element and just not care.
In comparison, my S&S and dual swords collection are pretty much all element dependant, the right element is the difference between insta monster gumbo, and the hunt that never ends.
@Indy83 blast is ALWAYS fixed damage. The only thing that changes for certain monsters like Shagaru is how quickly it goes off.
Thats incorrect.
The blast values on the weapon do pertain to often a hit will 'coat' the blast...
And the damage when it activates is fixed... However unlike slime thete are now enemies with resistances to blast, which means the damage does in fact vary by enemy.
There is highly resistant, which only takes 50-60 fixed damage, slight resistance, which takes 100-120, weak to which takes 200, very weak which takes 300 damage a blast, and got damn which takes 500 a blast.
The variable numbers in a category are by different enemy, not by chance.
For example:
High resist only 50 blast damage: Molten Tigrex
Some resist 100 blast damage: Shagaru Magala
Some weakness 200 blast damage: Kushalas
Weak. 300 blast damage: Akantor
Got Damn 500 blast damage: Gog
Yea Blast is always fixed blast damage and I got that using it against Shaggy was useless in a solo GQ hunt. Although his tolerance level is initially low and I get tons of blasts off, just that they do not as much damage compared to his HP levels.
I have been intending to use Switch Axe as well. I have barely touched my 'main' weapons of MH3U i.e. the hammer, longsword and switch axe in 4U haha.
Edit: By fixed blast damage, I mean the damage per blast we cause. That is after it goes off.
Guess I'll ask...is there any other differences in Act of Gog aside from HP and more attack? I know some of the others with a similar quest had some other catch to it. Chaotic I think had a new move/combo, and Ukanlos was in perma rage mode.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
@Tsurii
Well slime weapons were sorta overpowered with 200 dmg per activation. Although now element weapons almost always overpower them in the long run due to blast being good only in the start.
And no there are two Crimson fatty event quests.
@Megumi_Sagano
The first crimson fatty is just a regular old replacement to the normal quest. Maybe a bit tougher.
The second one is uber powerful at permarage mode. You need it for the tickets for the GX Fatalis armour, the one with Edgemaster and Arcana.
Nintendo fan, with a taste for all genres! Monster Hunter for the win!
@LasermasterA Shield Bearer is guard up + stamina recovery up, which is pretty awesome if you guard a lot (which I always liked to do lel)
I really like the set and its skills but..it sucks that I'm stuck with a really half-baked weapon and that I can't get it to work with other stuff (yet?)
And like I said, the stats are pitiful haha
Gotta upgrade the armor pieces.
le edit: Okay, I tried something else with the escadora relics.
Got the Zinogre X helm, Rebellion X mail, Kujula grip and the relics (legs+waist) which gives me Honed Blade, Shield Bearer, Razor Sharp and Artillery Novice with some jewels (using an edgemaster+4 charm with 3 slots and two weapon slots. Made it with the Lightbreak C. Blade for now)
It looks surprisingly good but I really need armor spheres. 651 defense makes me a sad cookie
I need to get back into charge blade. It would feel so good to master those technical blocks and use them at will.
But I can't... I'm addicted to switch ax infinite flexibility combo zen.
@Tsurii Oh nice. I guess it would be better suited for the Lance though. Although having 2 combined skills is pretty nice!
I am envious of that +4 Edgemaster 3 slot charm. I would have so many more options if I had it -_- Well atleast I have a +3 Edgemaster, +3 spirit charm.
I made a set which I now think is somewhat similar to yours. Evasion +1, Honed Blade, Element Atk Up and Challenger +2. I could have added a 5th skill if I had a 3 slot charm.
@Indy83
Well I feel it puts me too much into a defensive position at times since I can't go full offensive with axe mode and then get whacked. Although an ideal Guard Point style relies on being offensive with the sword mode and guard pointing into axe mode... And that requires some pretty fine timing/prediction/reaction (or all three) to go against all monsters. And often lands in a KO if you miss the GP -_-
But yea I am not THAT good at guard pointing. Although it did get me neat wins against the Diablos and Tigrex lines since they are so easy to predict.
Plus easy hits to all monsters during roars.
They definitely nerved the CB in Generations, now it takes more effort to charge the shield and GPs don't directly lead to super or ultra bursts.
