Topic: Minor issue with New Nintendo 2DS XL: Suggestions?

I was using my New Nintendo 2DS XL the other night and I noticed a curious issue with it that I’d never seen before. On its hinge there are two narrow incisions that help connect the top screen to the rest of the handheld (both are closer to each edge of the hinge than the inner camera in the centre for those unsure). While the right-sided incision is normal and closed-off, there is a problem with the left incision, where I can see the metal within the slit.

When feeling it with my finger, it appears that the central part of the hinge is partially raised above the small left section of the hinge to the left of the incision, unlike the right slit where both sides of the hinge on that part are even in height.

Please note that I haven’t used this system much since I bought it in factory-sealed condition from Game around launch in 2017 and I only unboxed it in July of this year. Even so, I handle all of my Nintendo systems with great care, so it wouldn’t be the reason behind this.

I know this sounds like a minor, bearable issue to deal with, but I’m just curious to learn whether I can resolve it and when I play, I can always see the metal shining within the left slit and it’s slightly annoying at times. Also, while probably not the case, I wouldn’t want the metal within the hinge to be exposed over time leading to damage.

I’ve used these forums a few times (and this website for a long time), but I’ve never needed to attach photos before and I don’t know how, so I hope the way I’ve described everything is relatively clear.

I’d appreciate it if someone could help me out.

Seems to me like the left side always has the metal part slightly visible.

It's just how it is. If it bothers you too much, perhaps you can cover it with something?

@Eel Huh, really? Do you own a New 2DS XL yourself?

@Eel Well I guess there’s no issue at all then lol. It must be weird design quirk of the New 2DS XL. I thought there was a problem with it because my other DS and 3DS systems have never had part of the innards exposed through the hinge from memory and the right side wasn’t exposed.

I was never bothered to begin with; I was just curious about whether I had a fault on my hands that I could fix, but I’m glad to know there was no issue. I was only a bit bothered about the exposed part being a functional problem down the road and the hinge breaking on me somehow, but it’s all fine.

Thanks for the answer 👍.

I assume the internal design of the hinge is just not perfectly symmetrical, so only one side ends up shining through.

Np, glad I could help.
