I don't like the tail either. It always disappears right after I go over an item box. >_<
After 20 hours I had my first rage quit. 1st place for the whole race, then at the finish line I get lightning'd (lose my defense items, yay!), smashed into, shelled, and end up in last place. After that I got blue shelled at the finish line three times in a row online.
Oh well. Oh and I tried to join you online Adam, but three races in a row it made me spectate for some reason, even though there was a spot open when I joined... so I gave up. :/

I've heard a fair amount of criticism of the Tanooki Tail but I actually quite like it, especially when things are pretty crowded on the first lap. Also you can smack the frogs for 6 on DK Jungle, which is way more fun than it should be...
I'm not saying it isn't useful, but like Pix and I have said, no matter how useful it is while you have it, the fact that it more often than not leaves you stranded without any item to protect you for a long stretch usually means getting hit, and getting hit usually means dropping several places and losing coins. Item boxes are fairly evenly placed on each course, and if you're driving full speed, you will hit the next set of blocks a second or two before the tail goes away.
I would rather the Tail be more like the Fire Flower, having a certain amount of uses before it goes, and then also have a time limit.
It's an alright item for defense, it can block multiple shells, but there are only a few item boxes that can be grabbed after using the tail.
And I'm sorta glad the fake item box is gone, I hated being in first and getting that, only to be hit by a red shell. I like playing defensively when I'm in first.
Also, coin battle is awful. You're limited to a max of 10 coins. If playing in teams, and your team sucks, you're pretty much finished before you even began. The coins probably add to your total coins, but it shouldn't, cause only being able to collect 10 coins, in a mode that is purely about collecting as many coins as you can is silly.

Does anyone else get handcramps when they play this (had this problem with MKDS too). Holding an item out behind my kart and/or drifting gives my right hand some pain! Anyone have any suggestions for holding the console in such a way that I can keep a firm thumb on the accelerator and ease the tension on my hand?
I am way too lazy to think of something clever. My Backloggery
@Token_Girl I have the same problem. The system is just to small for me to always be able to comfortably hit every button I need to hit. It seems especially bad when the system needs to charge. Which button are you using as the accelerator?
I don't know why customizable controls is such a hard thing to incorporate sometimes >__>

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
Is this game better than mario kart wii and mario kart 64.... Those are mu fav mario karts and ive not played mario kart 7 yet...
Yes it is better in my opinion. The graphics look better its also less floaty on the controls. The level design is great and the recycled boards are different enough that they seem somewhat new. Definitely looks like a higher Res Wii version. The only thing I don't like is the only time given is in time trial. The rest is just placement!

Hm, maybe it's just a matter of taste, but I thought that the Wii levels looked better on the Wii. There was a glowing, blooming kind of effect to the Maple Tree one in particular that felt a bit flattened and dulled on the 3DS. Different styles, I suppose.

@Token_Girl Using Y for the accelerator is a lot more comfortabe for me, although I do still get occassional pain in my right hand, just not as often. When it does flare up I just take a short break, and all is well.
@warioswoods Agreed. Maple Treewaay was my favorite track on MKW, but here it looks almost washed out. It has none of the vibrancy that I loved on Wii. I have to say though, I actually like the new version of Koopa Cape better than the original.
The A.I of the computer controlled karts in single player, on every MK game the A.I has cheated, but with practice and skill you could win, MK7 is very unbalanced and is pure luck where you finish. Blue shell, lighting then a green shell from nowhere in a matter of 2 seconds. To get 3 stars on all tracks at 150cc is nearly impossible. I love a challenge when playing video games, but I like to know with skill its possible and not just luck.
All Mario Kart games are somewhat based on luck. That's what Mario Kart is, a crazy item frenzy race. If you want skill then go play Forza or GT. The AI is the best of the series. They're not taking the same route every time but they're actually pretty smart.
And I was able to get 3 stars on all of the cups and cc's, so it can't be that hard.

@dirtyspasti So far I really haven't had any problems getting online or while I'm online. I did have some issues at my work once but reset the router and all was fine from there!

Playing at work? I hope that was during break.
Unfortunately, I'm still having lots of problems with MK7 online. I've tried opening ports and putting my 3DS into the router's DMZ, but it hasn't worked. So far, the only online races I've been able to successfully complete are with a friend who lives in Wales. Anyone else, I just get disconnected in the lobby or in the middle of a race.
My other online 3DS games work like a charm, so I wonder if the MK7 online is poorly programmed? I haven't even been able to e-mail Nintendo UK's support, as their form gives you a 404 when you submit it!
sighs I love the game, but the lack of online is spoiling it for me.

Agreed, it's only luck to the same extent that something like football is luck: there are so many factors involved and things that can go wrong, from a bad bounce to a ridiculous tip into defender's hands, but by the end of 4 quarters you can consistently come out on top if you truly are the better team and if you take advantage of every opportunity the game provides, not missing a single big-play moment.
In other words, I can pretty much always come out in 1st place in 150cc, even if I get screwed over in one or two of the 4 races. Even those cases where I've not placed first were full of missed opportunities where I know I could have won if I'd just seized on everything given to me. The chaotic luck makes it all the more fun for precisely that reason; you have to manage the situation and find a way to win, which won't be the same each time you race because it doesn't come down to a few definable skills.
