Topic: It's a shame that the 3DS has so few traditional 3D platformers

The platform is comparable to 6th gen platforms, which, early on, saw a pretty nice library of 3D platformers. But there is very little on the system.

Really the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Rayman 3D, and that's a port. 3D Land really isn't in the spirit of traditional 3D platformers, more following the style of a 2D platformer.

I guess you can say the same for consoles, but at least the Wii U will probably get A Hat in Time.

The 3DS isn't the only one with no sense of 3D platforming. If you look other than the 3DS, even the DS, Gamecube and even PS4 don't have much of 3D platforming.

I would like it if somebody produced one that was as good as the full 3D Levels in Jett Rocket 2 (There is hardly any of them).

And it was one of the ones that required some skill to play properly.

The GC had a few, Super Mario Sunshine, Wario World, Billy Hatcher, Frogger Beyond, Chibi-Robo, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Sonic Adventure, Tak, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro etc

There is Rayman 3D (Which still hasn't been ported properly even after however many attempts). The Dreamcast version is quite good.

The 3DS version of Sonic Lost World is better than that awful port though.

What is traditional anyway surely that would be e.g Bug! / Sonic 3D Blast.

The industry in general is lacking in 3D platformers, Nintendo likes their platformers to be linear nostalgia-fests, and the rest of the industry barely makes platformers to begin with. And we haven't had a collectathon game in 5-10 years (depending on whether or not you consider Galaxy a collectathon) with the exception of indies. It's hard to say whether Nintendo will make another one, they don't seem to have a very high opinion of them.

I'm not even necessarily looking for a collectathon. I'm more looking for a game that caters more to the core aesthetics of pre Mario 3D Land 3D platformers. 3D Platforming is less about clearing a stage as fast as possible without dying, and more about accessing secrets and clearing puzzles with a free range of movement. That can be done as a collectathon, or it can be done in some other way.

Platforming is entirely about clearing a stage as fast as possible without dying. (2D or 3D doesn't matter)

No it's not. The older 3D platformers (mainly collectathons) didn't really emphasize clearing stages quickly because they were more exploration focused. Instead, it's more about using your platforming skills to explore the level. I would definitely welcome a return to that style of platformer, it's certainly a different experience from all of the get to the goal obstacle courses we have now.

What, no they're not. Platformers are about avoiding obstacles to reach a goal. Sometimes time is one of those obstacles, buts never mandatory.

OP is right though, 3DS does seem to be lacking in platformers in general. I think I can coun all the good ones on two hands.

Wasn't Sonic Boom on 3DS not a train wreak though?

The 3DS Sonic Boom was a 2D platformer.

Really. I barely heard anything about it, so I just assumed.

Maybe the use of Unity on New 3DS will help to fight that.

Wii U should also get Ukulele and Lobodestroyo.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Agreed. 3D Land was nice, but I was hoping that somebody would show how useful depth perception is to a 3D platformer. At the very least, I would love to play a 3D remake of Mario 64.

Nope. I grew up in the N64 era, so I didn't ever really touch many 2D platformers until I was much older. I had played several 3D platformers and I liked them. When I eventually played some 2D Platformers, I didn't enjoy them half as much.

There's a fundamental difference in the gameplay style.

True but Wario World isn't exactly a 3D game more or less much like a top down sort of game. These are only so few and most of them are ports. But then again, Nintendo seems to be the only dev to actually make platform games a LOT!

My mistake on the GameCube.....how could I have forgotten the obvious?????? WARIO WORLD!!!!!! SUNSHINE!!!!!!!!!!! What great games I've played back then and I've nearly forgotten about their existence.

I've played through Sonic Lost World 4 times because it's the most recent 3D platformy type game for the system. Wish there were more

Cause they are multiplats.....so its generally not the selling point for Nintendo to have multiplat games because they don't do much in terms of sales and identity.

Because they are pretty universally terrible (Excluding Nintendo).

Cases in point Rayman 2 (Dreamcast) is pretty good the two Rayman 2 ports are absolutely dire (DS and 3DS).
