I miss those arcade games from Midway. It was never really perfect, but usualy fun. Always good graphics, and crazy plots. I don't really think there is still a public for them. Is there ? It was also very different from the japanese games. It was more rigid, not as smooth as Ridge Racer, Sega Rally etc...
To me it would be a perfect fit for the 3DS. The closest I found was the last Sonic All Star Racing Transformed, which is a great game. However the 3DS version with pixelisation and very slow framerate is a bit hard to enjoy.
I would love to find back those games... no remakes, new games, in the same style.
Rush
Discovered on N64. Loved the idea. Cars, city, race, jump, shortcuts, crash. But graphics were very blurry and gameplay not that good. The fun was elsewhere. They really improved the formula with Rush 2097.
Cruis'n
This game is a bit special to me. Everyone hates it. I love it. USA, World and Exotica at least. I came from the Amiga. Played games like Lotus turbo challenge. Cruis'n for me was kind of the same, but with great graphics. Its very simple, you just enjoy the graphics and the game. Its very easy to play, but the game is very hard. Don't look at the clipping, and the bad physic. I always hoped they did one a bit more clean episode technically... well they did Cruis'n Wii -_-
Hydro Thunder
This will be hard to see on the 3DS since it's a Microsoft property now.. Xbox and Win8 version are good, from Vector Unit. They had to deliver it quite fast with a small file size (Xbla limit), and they did a great job I think. The old real devs, Specular Interactive are still doing great arcade games for Raw Thrills (Eujen jarvis, dad of Cruisn' ^^). Never had the luck to try H2Overdrive, the real following of Hydro Thunder.
Gauntlet Legend
Very repetitive and cheesy. It was almost a shooter. But again I liked it. The medieval fantasy theme was fun and it was cool to play with my bro.
I would like to find those kind of games on the 3DS...
And voilà. Nostalgia.
Btw, hi, it's my first post here.
At the time it was out, it got lots of bad reviews : http://www.mobygames.com/game/n64/cruisn-usa ... slowdowns, massive popups, and some little details as animals crossing the road cut. Also the game wasn't exactly the trend. It was not serious as a Need For Speed, or some new sims, and didn't have the deep gameplay from the arcade japanese games from Namco and Sega.
However, it was fun. Not perfect, but to me as a kid and even today... its nice, just mindless fun. I was feeling I was traveling a bit with this game doing tourism. Loved the way the graphics looked kind of photo-realistic at this time. And the general mood of the game, very 90'.
Remember I needed a bit of time to accept the clunky physic, popups and slowdowns, especialy them, popups and slowdows -_- Also the music ^^' well after some time you find it funny, but at first I was like what is this?! ^^'
Cruisn' World had better framerate. Exotica came too late and didn't interest anyone. It was more silly also, but had some nice locations.
On 3ds a game like this can be cool. With proper graphics, online play and 3D to add a scale to the background, since the focus of this serie always been on traveling more than really driving mechanics.. if you agree with me.
Would it cost that much to create a game like this today? I mean, the backgrounds are kind of on rails, the physics isnt advanced. It would need lot of texture work and 3d modeling. But would it sell today ?
For pleasure some pictures :
Yeah, it's not some masterpiece of racing games, but I (and everyone I grew up with) enjoyed the silliness of the games (even the ultra stupid physics). That was all part of the fun back then, IMO.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
Hmm it's true... I put it here at first cause my idea was I wanted game like this on the 3DS. Now Its not the best place here for this topic sorry....
And yes for Killer Instinct wasn't from Midway but it was also a gem from this period. Smash Tv never played it.
The 64 version of Cruisin' USA was an awful port. It came at a rough time for N64 owners to boot (Great launch titles, Wave Race was great...then we had a stream of reasonable to poor releases). The arcade version was brilliant, I just felt so cheated by the home one.
As for the connection between Midway and Killer Instinct, Midway helped publish the arcade releases. In the US at least.
