They aren't creating real reasons to buy both games (e.g. by creating interesting storylines or good characters for each that makes you want to actually experience both sides), they're simply splitting content to get sales in a cheap way.
Oh, so what did you think of the ending of the Nohr storyline?
sigh. They aren't trying to sell the games solely based on that merit. You're right - we don't know how good the storylines are at the moment, or how interesting the characters will be. My point is that right now they are splitting at least three different aspects of the game that they didn't need to just to sell both versions, and not relying on the games being sold because they're good.
Consumers wont all buy both games because they're good; some will say "Oh well I really want to marry the male gay character, but I also want to play the harder game of the two, so I guess I'll have to buy both" as has already been seen in this thread. Nintendo creating more and more of these dividing factors is a stupid way to sell the game. Instead of people wanting to get both games, so much is split exclusively between both they feel like they have to buy both just to have the fun Fire Emblem experience that they want to enjoy. But I imagine none of this actually matters to you and you're just going to try and take my points out of context again.
To clarify: I'm not saying that each game won't necessarily have enough content, or that the stories will be bad. We have no way of telling that until they actually come out - my point is separate to those concerns. No matter how good the story is, it doesn't undo the fact that they're still splitting content in an unnecessary way just to get more sales.
@Geonjaha even if the stories were entirely different and not really cannon to each other, it would still pretty much tell the consumer to buy both. That's what bothers me.
Now I can be fine with Oracle of Ages and Seasons because of how cheap they are in the Eshop (And also because of how Nintendo tells you earlier that you need both the games.) and because of how at the time, technology just wasn't there yet. But with the 3DS, there's no excuse to this. But idk, maybe I'm getting to angry about this because it might actually make sense for this to happen. My problem is that if you get this one but just realized that the other one was better, then obviously the consumer will be upset because they don't know which one is better than the other.
So I'm positive that I want to choose Conquest because of how I like the character designs there but if somehow I found out that the other one had better characters midway, that will make me upset because I thought this one was good for me. So if I get Nohr and played as beginner and played in classic and ended up dying constantly because of how Nintendo wants you to get Birthright, then yeah, its upsetting.
Even one of the reviewers felt that the story is so complicated that you really need to get both games to enjoy it.
@Artwark - I mean, splitting the game up in the first place is a dodgy decision, but I probably would have still bought the second copy if the first one was really fun and interesting. The fact that they need to hammer it home by making exclusive content for each that many people would want in one whole package just makes it worse.
Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons came out a long time ago, and at least then they didn't split content. I don't really support Pokemon doing it either, but at least with Pokemon if you have a friend or someone online you can always get the content from the other game eventually. With this game there's no way someone can choose to play the harder game of the two, while also getting the other kingdom and a certain partner of the same sexuality. It's locking small things behind each game just for the sake of it.
Maybe not being able to chose precisely which characters are gay is Nintendo's way of doing social commentary. You don't chose your orientation, you know, just like in real life.

I know nothing about the Oracle games (those, Spirit Tracks and Link's Awakening are the only Zelda games I haven't played at all). How I see it is similar to Sacred Stones, but the 2 paths are split into 2 separate games because hardcore Fire Emblem fans generally hate Awakening but that game is the only reason the series still exists.
This has changed nothing for me just another feature I may or may not use but it is nice to see Nintendo include it for those who care/wanted it, show that they are listening and willing to change stances in line with what should be the norm in today's society.

Also similar, but Sacred Stones only had something like 8-10 unique chapters for each path and they join up by the end anyway. Conquest and Birthright are two complete, independent storylines that stand on their own. They share a beginning, but have entirely different middles and ends. Buying both doesn't give you one complete package. It gives you two.
It's two games. I actually think that much fewer people would take issue with this if they were released 6 months apart.
Also, you should definitely check out the Oracle games.
For the record, Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons were also two entirely different games. That's actually a much better comparison than Pokemon.
Agreed. Pokemon however is a great comparison for a way worse example of a ''double game release'', because it's the exact same thing with a spare few different monsters to catch -transferable anyway-. Yet that hardly gets any criticism compared to Fates nowadays, and it's as obvious a cash grab as it gets... Go figure.
Personally I am totally fine with the Nohr and Hoshido paths being two separate games for reasons I already explained at length elsewhere in NL. I'll buy Nohr on release day and Hoshido as soon as I can.
Kind of sad that NL had to disable comments in the news article in fear of brashly homophobic comments and the like... I mean, if that was the reasoning behind it.
Personally I am all for it for the people who'd like it, although it'd be nice if the article's translation was mistaken at parts because from how it reads I'm getting the idea that there is only one possible homosexual relationship on each side, which is kind of limited.
Homosexuality is fine by me, but the latter two are not, especially the incest bit. It's about as bad as Lynlee in Xenoblade X having really questionable underwear equipment for being 13 y/o. It just makes it seem like the game is pandering to basement dwelling weeaboos by giving them borderline hentai dialogue that doesn't even sound like it's trying to be vague about it. It'll probably get censored in localisations but come on... This, coupled with the Pokemon Amie-esque feature and dumbed down difficulty just put the nail in the coffin for this game as far as I'm concerned.
On the topic of what will be censored, something I don't get is why is NintyUS always censoring games (to silly lengths) when they are games made by Nintendo who put them in there in the first place?

Because something that might be acceptable in Japan, Europe or wherever else, isn't really the same case overseas. It's that simple. Nintendo especially tries to cater to all ages, so leaving in anything too raunchy might put off parents getting games for their kids, for example.

This is why the rating boards exist though. The game actually isn't trying to cater to all ages. It's trying to appeal to teenagers and adults, people who are, in theory, mature enough to form their own opinions on cultural values.

The sexual stuff is only some of the changes they make, there's things like damm to no in Metroid Prime, no red crosses on hospitals in Earthbound etc. If it's to keep age ratings low is one thing but it's just weird alot of the times.

True, I guess I just see censoring as simply toning down sexual content and possibly swearing/word usage, not so much the other stuff you mentioned. I forget it even applies to stuff like that, hah.
