It's entirely luck based. Yeah, it's not fun. This was definitely the weakest part of the game.

Like I said I kept losing on the final boss, lol. My army keep decreasing greatly after each failure.
I make sure my army is slightly bigger and then hope for at least two wins and a tie, because that'll give you the win.

I don't mind if I go to the final boss with only 1/2 or even 1/4 of the final boss' army. I still have a chance.
And if I lost, just spend some play coins, wait a couple days, and try again.
Pay attention to the boss's attacks the first time you play him. Keep track. If you lose, immediately buy some warriors (you'll automatically get "lucky" and get 10x what you paid) and fight him again. He will follow a similar pattern as the fight before. He won't use the same type of soldier, but instead will follow the pattern.
For example, let's say he attacked with Rock, rock, paper, paper, scissors your first battle. The next game if he starts with paper, paper will be what he attacks with second as well. If he thenshifts to scissors for his 3rd attack, then his 4th attack will also be scissors based on the original battle's pattern. The last attack would be rock.
Using this, you will beat him eventually. I completed the game over 10 times with this strategy. Only stopped because I got all the achievements for it.
A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It's jolted by every pebble on the road.
It's not a set pattern, but the final boss will adhere to the pattern he establishes when you first battle him. My previous post explains. Don't exit the game if you lose; immediately buy more warriors and attack again.
