So, lately I learned that various people using North American Nintendo 3DS consoles, including myself, have been experiencing an inability to add funds to their Nintendo eShop accounts via prepaid cards of any value. Apparently, even when 16-character code is typed in correctly, I have not been able to add funds due to "Error code: 026-6838", which does not make any sense because according to Nintendo's customer support site (as per the link) this error code refers to users unable to gain access points for the Wi-Fi connection in general, and I tried the code multiple times, at different periods of day, within the best connection point possible, and the result is always the same!
Last time I was able to successfully add funds was in February 2015. I'm not sure if this is based on any recent updates to the console's system software - all I know I cannot increase my eShop balance at the time being, and I'm not ready to purchase another prepaid eShop card anytime soon to see whether this is an isolated incident.
Sounds weird, have you tried contacting nintendo and seeing if they're aware of the problem?
I was considering it, but I need to make sure this is a problem with many different Nintendo 3DS owners before I bring up this issue with Nintendo's customer support, just to be sure this isn't some isolated incident that the company isn't already aware about.
Just tried to add two $20 cards, a 3DS eShop one (the red one) and a Wii U/3DS eShop card (the orange one). The orange one worked, but the red one didn't. Perhaps the issue is with the old-style 3DS eShop cards?
