Does it seem like people are really hard on the 3DS? or is this always the case for a new system? I have been buying nintendo consoles for awhile but I've only just started reading video game blogs around E3 last year. It just seems like the opinions on the web are very negative ( saying things like "the 3DS flopped" or "failed"). I don't mean to start any debates or anything, but I kind of wanted to know if this is normal Anyways, thank you for taking the time to read this and have a good day!
well this isnt a new thing, its very difficult to get a console launch running 100 percent smooth. honestly, the launch was a flop, with the delay of the eshop and other features, the overall release date should have also been pushed back. things have started to pick up, but the 3ds has a few fatal flaws that will unfortunately drag it down for awhile. The fact that it may get confused with a regular DS to a casual gamer is just one example. people are being hard on it because its so easy to find its flaws, when the pros can often only be experienced in person
"Love your ego, you won't feel a thing, always number one, the pen with a bent wrist crooked king, sign away our peace, for your war, one word and it's over." ~ Deadmau5
Everyone usually hates on a Nintendo console, it was the same with the Wii in 2006, so it's not unusual. After a year when it's picked up momentum and has better games available then it should decrease a little.
This whole "failed" thing is probably because of the recent price-drop and the 3DS' really bad start out of the gate and maybe it's few minor faults, also with the Vita nearing launch they are guessing the 3DS has failed.
Nothing can fail this early, once it picks up speed it'll be fine and the bashing will eventually sub-side.
People are hard on products that don't meet their expectations.
This. Especially the media which loves to sensationalize things.
True. When exaggerated claims meet underperformance, some people will definitely feel severely let down.
I for one love my 3DS. I never had a DSi, so all those DSiWare games are new to me. There's tons of content to download, and I've found many games that I absolutely love (Metal Torrent; Cave Story; the reminder why I love Super Mario Land, Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong GB so much, Let's Golf, etc.). The 3DS has plenty of quality games already, and there are many more to come in the future. So stop all this bickering and just enjoy what you have, cause there is even better stuff on the way.

first, i didnt expect to buy a portable ps3 or xbox 360. i expected an updated nintendo DSi. And so far, its what i got. and more.
i use it all the time, so i wont go bashing it for being underpowered. its one hell of a great entertaining machine, just like what nintendo gave me since the NES. I didnt buy it for a battlefield 3 port, or a ghost recon port. i bought it mainly for the nintendo franchised games like mario, zelda and metroid. theyre coming soon enough. plus it gives me the pleasure to revisit old games that made my childhood, i can draw on it, i can surf the web (with contraints of course, but it works)
There are a lot of things wrong with the 3DS, and Nintendo's stance on online content/infrastructure. There are a lot of things wrong with the Wii, and most likely the Wii U.
While most people don't knock Nintendo software, except the clear shovelware like Fling Smash. You're blind if you don't see the serious flaws with Nintendo's hardware. Also most people I see complaining (aside from trolls) DON'T want Nintendo to fail, but feel utterly betrayed in some form, either with pathetic localization, poor hardware, or just Reggie saying something stupid or something. They complain because they care, and/or want Nintendo to get their heads from out of their rears.
And people downplay Nintendo's issues just as must as sensationalism them. For every one person who says the 3DS will fail, there's one person to say the 3DS sales were great, regardless of what Nintendo themselves have said.
Humans work in extremes...We're pretty stupid honestly.
I love my 3DS, yeah it had a rough start but it will pick up as more games come out. It didn't that help people were speculating about what it could do, especially that people expected and wanted it to pop-out at every opportunity (which it can, but it doesn't which I like).
When I got my DS Lite in 2006 the only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that I couldn't play Gameboy and Gameboy color games on it. Later on I was annoyed that it's top screen wasn't 16:9, that friend codes were one per game and, eventually, that the games on it were limited graphically. They literally solved all the problems I had with my DS Lite. I'm not saying the 3DS is perfect because it isn't. There is some 3D crosstalk in high contrast scenes, games are now region locked and the games I want aren't out yet. Having said that I don't see them as big problems and when I first held the 3DS and played the Kid Icarus demo I was blown away by how good the system looked.
I'm not an average user though. I'm a Nintendo fanboy, I always lower my expectations and I'm obsessed with technical details so I know what to expect. I suppose some people get into the 3DS expecting games that look like Avatar combined with cheesy 80s style 3D gimmicks with their eyes automatically adjusting. That's not what you get and maybe some people are annoyed that's not what they got.

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
The 3DS takes so much crap because people don't realize that it's new console and not a hardware update. And Sony lovers say
"Ooh, our Vita has dual analog sticks and an HD Touchscreen. What you you nintendo babies have? A lame 3D screen. Pathetic."
And kids these days don't care about Nintendo stuff, because they think it's for babies, and get an iPodTouch and a Vita to play "Hardcore" games, when they didn't grow up in the Golden Nintendo age. And kids are very important in Nintendo's market, so people say "Ooh, Nintendo is dying. Finally, now us hardcore gamers can really have some fun!"
But remember the N64 and Gamecube? They didn't sell well in thier first year, but they survived. So the 3DS and Nintendo itself is not going anywhere. They'll be here for a long time.
The 3DS definitely wasn't $250 good; it's plenty good for $170 though. Really, the only thing that worries me is that there's so much they could have done with firmware updates for Wii (and to a lesser extent, the DSi, since it was shorter lived), but they just DON'T. I worry that the 3DS has lots of potential with online (messaging to friends, seeing what people are playing, an actual shopping cart system for game purchases, etc.), but they just won't implement it.
Why hasn't there been an update for Wii to show videos through the shop channel and add functionality like on the eShop? I don't see any reason why the Nintendo/Shop channel can't be combined there. That hasn't happened, and I can't, for the life of me, figure out why. They really haven't done much with the Wii firmware, so when they say that the 3DS has the capability to add functionality and improve with updates like the PS3 and 360 have done, I just don't trust them. The Wii has that capability too...Nintendo just hasn't used it.
That being said, overall, I'm happy with the systems and have fun with the games (and they are still cheaper than their competitors, so I'm willing to let these online issues slide). At the end of the day, online gaming isn't the end-all be-all for me. I prefer single player/local multiplayer experiences for most games. If you like online stuff, a PS360 isn't too expensive, and depending on the type of game, an affordable PC works too.

People have been hating on Nintendo since the PS1 arrived. As soon as Sony came along and started making games on discs Nintendo was suddenly gaming's dinosaur. They were still using cartridges and everyone thought they were behind the times. Even When Wii U arrives it'll be the same thing. Sony will be viewed as the ultimate power and Nintendo will be lagging behind. I play videogames for the fun of it. Not for the best possible technology.

I did notice something about the gaming industry. The consoles with the best technology always sell less than the competition. Look at the N64, Xbox, PS3 and PSP
@ Iz20XX Nah Sega might have put up a good fight but the real hate started with the rise of Sony. Discs verses cartriges was a huge leap.
So many kids during the PS1 era would argue that Sony was better simply based on the CD technology. I had some so called friends once that would argue up and down about cartridges being so much worse. They even dared to call Ocarina of time just a 3D remake of the original Zelda. Obviously they never bothered to play it.

The Colecovison and Master System are two other good examples.

The consoles with the best technonogy probably only sold worse because they cost more. PS3 didn't start flying off the shelves until they started dropping the price.
