Hey everyone! I'm really lucky to have received Cave Story 3D two days early of the UK release date from www.shopto.net. I was wondering what the impressions of the game were, as I think the US release date was today or yesterday anyway so I hope that a few of you may have picked up the game!
I have to say graphics wise the game is beautiful. I have never played any of the previous versions of Cave Story so I wouldn't be one of those people who think the graphics have lost their lovely retro touch, but if you have then please comment on that. The 3D effect is the best I have seen so far (I own Zelda OOT, DOA, SSFIV, Star Fox 64 3D, Pilotwings, and Ridge Racer) and really increases the depth which makes the scenery look even better. Overall graphics are a 9 IMO.
I love the sound effects. I think the reworked soundtracks are absolutely gorgeous, and depite not having played previous versions of Cave Story I have heard many of the soundtracks, and I definitely prefer these. Thres some Orchestral along with some old style retro, which means all the time you get a pleasant and refreshing change of sound. 8/10
I can't really say much about the gameplay. I'm but an hour in so I haven't had very many fights, but from what I've played it's very smooth and works well. The controls are also really easy to navigate and overall I think the game is absoloutely amazing.
Overall I'd give Cave Story 3D a 9/10. It seems the critics love it too! http://www.metacritic.com/game/3ds/cave-story-3d If anyone is yet to pick up any version of Cave Story I seriously suggest getting it now, (Or Friday if you live in the UK like me) as I think - especially with the 3DS drought - this will be a great nifty addition to your library before SM3DL. If you have played previous versions of Cave Story I would suggest holding off for a while simply because of the lack of length and the price that it costs - £30/$40 - but I would suggest getting it for Christmas or as soon as you can.
Having played the DSiWare version previously, I can say that this 3D version is very faithful to the original game in terms of the physics and difficulty. As I'm always open to improved versions of games rather than moaning and groaning about them while wearing nostalgia goggles, I can say I really enjoyed this. The improved music is astounding, and the lighting really gives you a sense of being underground. The characters other than Quote and Curly look a little unpolished (like 3D models rather than characters), but that doesn't really dampen the experience at all for me. The 3D effect is also amazing.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
I have only played the DSiWare version and got the bad ending, but I'm fixing that problem with this wonderful remake. The graphics are gorgeous, and the remixed music is awesome while being faithful to the original. The 3D effect is not that impressive to me so far, but that might change later on. I'm currently in the Bushlands, so I still have a long way to go before I can fully judge this remake.

You keep saying that, while failing to mention that the original music was better, nostalgia or not. I would say the same about the graphics but I haven't seen it in 3D. does the music have to be in 3D for it to sound good?

How have you heard the brand new music if you don't own the game? These aren't the same remixes from the WiiWare version; they were done by the Super Meat Boy composer just for the 3DS game.
Anyway absolutely cannot wait to get this for Christmas!

So you're saying I'm wrong because...it's better? You can't defend your opinion by simply saying: "It's better because I say so". It makes your argument invalid.

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot it was impossible to listen to VGM unless it's coming out of the actual game. unless you were feigning ignorance, in which case bleh you
This remake keeps getting better and better. I forgot to mention that you can look at your map on the bottom screen without having to pause the game, unlike in the DSiWare version. Words cannot describe how much that particular change makes the game less frustrating.
@Knux Same here! I'm absolutely loving this game, especially since it's my first version of the game! Already racked up 4 hours playtime in barely a day!
Has anyone heard anything about new areas in Cave Story 3D? I doubt that the Wind Fortress is in there, and I'll probably get this game either way, but having some new rooms or secrets would be cool.

No Wind Fortress, but there are some new rooms and stuff within existing areas.

Ok, that's good to know. Thanks.
But I wish I could play Wind Fortress still...I need a Mac.
