@RR529 there is a power up that you can grab which ejects all members of the opposing team, it can leave you defenceless when it happens, but moving in front of your goal can help protect it if you are able to get there in time
@Kazuo I personally prefer using the c-stick. But only because I do something a little differently that most other people don't do. Because the c-stick tends to get slippery and hard to move in certain directions, I put the bottom of my t-shirt over my thumb giving it more grip and making the controls indescribably easier to use. I know its a little weird, but I would recommend that anyone with similar problems try this.
Just figured I'd post a few tricks I've spotted whilst playing Blast Ball:
1) The shield can damage other players [from the other team, of course]. You can use it to deflect the ball easily or cause someone to eject by walking into them constantly.
2) You can damage other players; for example, you can force them to eject by shooting at them constantly by holding R and aiming at them. Very useful if someone is defending very well, or if someone is camping in front of a small goal.
3) When people are about to be ejected, I've seen them move to be in front of the goal so they can easily defend if they respawn in time, or, in the case of the small goals (caused when 2 goals are scored), make it slightly harder to get the ball in, as, if you do this, the ball will (in most cases) just bounce off your shell as you respawn.
4) This may seem stupid, but using the voice commands can actually be useful. Good ones to keep assigned to the D-Pad include: "Defence!", "Offence!", "I'll go defence!" and "I'll go offence!"; seems to actually help by letting people know what you're going to do.
5) Practice; there are two separate modes for practising, and after playing them a few times, I got to grips with the controls even better. For example, you can press L to lock on to the ball and R to use the motion controls to aim at a certain part of the ball to change its direction, such as hitting it in the bottom corners to slightly move it in the opposite direction (bottom left to go right, and vice versa).
Another small tip:
6) Sidestepping is a good technique that you should get to grips with, especially if you are defending. It can be useful, if, for example, you are defending on the left side of the pitch and the ball begins to head to the right, and vice versa.
Everyone listen to this guy. These are some essential tips to actually getting better at and enjoying the game.
Has anyone else noticed that occasionally, after a goal is scored, a different ball will pop out? It looks like a little molten planet, and I think that it takes you out in one hit.
Huh, I guess it's random so you can try to beat Challenge several times. I'll have to try again later. Last night @Vee_Flames and I were able to get into the same match and made it to the 4th round. @shaneoh yeah, I think there are 3 different kinds. I remember that molten planet-like ball also appeared in the NWC 2015. The other one I've seen was kind of blue/white I think and I think it was a lot lighter so you didn't have to use much power to move it.

I find that it's not so much that the blue ball is easier to move, but rather it just has lower gravity, causing it to float and bounce more. Try shooting it from above to get it over defender's heads.
@Kazuo Having a shield powerup active seems to also protect you from being ejected.
I've now given the Blast Ball demo a couple of hours, and now that I've found the control scheme I like best for my N3DS, I am finding it to be a lot of fun - seriously everyone should give it a chance!! Don't just play it for 5 minutes and make up your mind on that. I would hate to see the Metroid franchise fail like Star Fox due to people not even trying to give it a chance. It's not just me either, both my boys are playing it non-stop, they've put down Monster Hunter and Yokai Watch to play Blast Ball and are having a great time.
I've played about 5 matches now (and like 3 practice matches before that), and haven't won a single one. However, I finally scored my first real goal, and unlocked the combat sim (gives you a taste of the real game).
I will say the game is visually much more appealing than what we saw in the videos beforehand (naturally, it looks much better on the 3DS itself), however, I'm finding the controls to be extremely clunky.
I'm not sure how much of that is due to me playing it on an OG 3DS (I'm sure it's better on a N3DS), or because I just came off playing Halo Anniversary last week (which is played using a controller more suited to this sort of gameplay).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
Just beat Challenge Mode earlier! I'll have to check back on how many I have, but what paint customizations does everyone have?
I've gotten one for winning a match, getting three goals in one match, 5 saves, a 7 win streak, beating challenge mode, walking 10 000 Km and I think perhaps a couple others. I'll have to double check with my other 3DS, but it seems that the skins are random for every achievement that you get.
@RR529 do you happen to have a circle pad pro? I've found that most comfortable along with gyro controls for when locked on. new 3DS works fine as well btw.
I kind of liked the gyro and dual stick controls so it took me awhile to choose one I preferred until I found out there were gyro controls for the dual stick.
No, I don't have a CPP, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. I managed to get to the final match in Challenge Mode (lost in overtime, augghhh!).
As for paint jobs, I have Basic, Club, Diamond, Star, Flames, Kraid, & Mother Brain.

@Dezzy the rank ones allow you to replay multiple times for a high score, but nothing else aside from that. Beat it for both parts, but got no reward. Also your scores are traded with other players you play with/against online.
Currently I just have 3 paint jobs left with 2 that I don't know how to get.
I'll mark them all as a spoiler, but these are all of the ones I know about Win a match, Win 7 in a row, Win 10 games, Score 3 goals in one game, Get 3 assists in a game, Perform, 5 blocks in a game, Score within 5 seconds, Score 50 goals, Get 50 assists, Perform 100 blocks, Run 10 000km, Push the ball 10 000km, Beat a challenge, ???, ???
@RR529 I also have an original 3DS and I like the controls quite a lot, I felt them like playing any other prime game almost instantly. I have no problems with them, but then again I'm one of those weird guys that enjoy MH4 U controls without the need of the CPP.
