FAT32. Easy if on a Mac. You will need to get a utility if on Windows.

@WoomyNNYes No i need one card for 3DS and one card for Wii U.

But i did find a 8GB standard SD card in my Wii U. So i might take it and use it on the 3DS and just buy one Sd card for 3DS.

I think 8GB might be enough for 3DS for me, but i might need more for Wii U.

But now i heard from a retailer employee about only some Micro SD cards could work. Not all of them.

I think he wrote me about how Micro SD XC would NOT work , but Micro SD HC would work.

(edited: No need for a Switch Micro SD card right now, but maybe later!)

@Simon97 You don't need to depend on stores/retailers for directions for nintendo consoles.😉 Nintendo support websites have directions & info for virtually everything. (you can even plug console error codes into the the search bar to see what the error codes mean, and how to resolve them.)

Yeah, 3ds hardware only supports up to 32GB micro sd cards. Anything larger is a is considered a different class of cards, SDXC. SDXC = 64GB cards and larger. 3DS hardware came from a time before 64GB cards were on the market, or affordable.

So, if you want to see the card details again, or the full details, you can search "micro sd wii u", or "micro sd 3ds", and you'll find pages each console's card compatibility details.

@WoomyNNYes I got better info from the retailer than i got from the Nintendo support service in Sweden so i think the retailer is quite excellent because they had better knowledge than the Nintendo general distribution company in Sweden (Bergsala is the name).
And i prefer asking people rather than read on a web site. I actually did try the web site you link to at first but i could not find the right info there.

But it is too bad i could only use a 32 GB SD or Micro SD card for 3DS. But maybe Wii U could handle 64 GB or 128 GB cards.

I think for 3DS, 32 Gb is more than enough anyway. I might even go with the 8 GB SD card i found in my Wii U and put it in my 3DS. And then buy a 16 GB or 32GB SD card for Wii U. But 64 or 128 would be better.

Buying a USB stick or an external HDD are other options but i think the external HDD is too pricey. The cheapest i found when i looked around was 599 kronor (60 us dollars, roughly) for an HDD. I think it was 1 TB.

A 64 GB or 128 GB USB stick might be a nice option if Wii U only handles 32 GB SD Cards but i think Wii U might not be able to handle a USB stick. Maybe, maybe not.

32 GB might still be enough for Wii U though. The only big game i own digitally is Paper Mario Color splash. Color splash is about 4-5 GB. Then there are a few games at about 1 GB or slightly less. Super Mario Maker is about 1,5 GB (but then there are updates and my saved levels too). Some Turbo grapx games are almost 1 GB.

I found some great info now about Wii U and SD cards.

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a...

In the article, it says:

"SD memory cards with a capacity of up to 2 GB and SDHC memory cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB are compatible."

I guess it means my regular sized 8 GB SD card is actually not working with Wii U now, it just sits there nicely in the slot. I guess.

My Wii U is the white model with 8 Gb storage built in, of which about half of the 8 GB is for system updates. Which is maybe why i only seem to have about 4 GB available on my Wii U despite the 8 GB card.

Maybe i got the 8 GB card for my 3DS at one point and then, when i sold the 3DS sometime in 2016, maybe i just put the SD card in the Wii U? Maybe.

In 2016 i played 3DS quite a lot and i had some games, digital games, i needed storage for, games like monster hunter IV, Metroid Federation Force, Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer and a few others. On my old Nintendo Account which was linked to the 3DS i sold. I think i detached my account from the 3DS before i sold it. Maybe the games are also still on the 8 GB SD card currently in the Wii U. I should check later tonight. If the SD Card is not formatted for Wii U, it should still work for 3DS.

Actually being able to play the old 2015-2016 digital 3DS games on my current 3DS (which has another account i made recently because of the eshop closing event) is another thing though. The games might still be on the 8 GB SD card, but are they playable? Hm.

I wonder how or if i could get my old account 3DS back. I guess it is an NNiD account.

I might email "Nintendo in Sweden" (Bergsala) tomorrow about it. Or tonight, why wait.

Oh well.

Happy Home Designer was a sweet little game though. But it did not have any clear goal. you could design rooms or houses any way you wanted and still get the same nice feedback. But it was kind of nice and a cosy little game.

I found an article about SD cards for 3DS as well now. It seems like not any Micro SD cards at all are compatible, not officially.

At least not for the regular 3DS models. But if you have one of the newer New 3DS models, it is different.

https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/p...

Hm, but if only SD cards up to 2 Gb works, how could my 8 GB SD card work? (the one i mentioned in a previous post)

Maybe the 8 GB card works, but not officially. and maybe 3DS only recognizes it as a 4GB or 2 GB card. Hm. Hm.

The plot thickens.

If 3DS does not work with an 8GB SD card, i might need two new SD cards. One for Wii U and one for 3DS.

updated my own post:

Actually, 3DS does work with regular sized SD cards as long as they are SD HC.

"The Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS systems are compatible with SD cards up to 2 GB in size, and SDHC cards of 4 GB and larger up to 32 GB in size. All other SD Card types are not considered compatible. miniSD and microSD cards are compatible with the use of an SD card adapter."

And i just checked, and my card currently inside the Wii U is an 8GB SD card which is standard sized SD HC. From Samsung i think, or Sandisk.

So it should work just fine on my 3DS.

8GB for 3DS should be enough for 3DS....since i only managed to download 3-4 purchased games and a lot of free games and demo versions.

Unless the 8 GB card contains the old all digital games i got in 2016 .. a long time ago since i played them. I need space for them too. I think i also have gunman clive and code name steam as digital games, linked to a previous account though. An acoount i need to retrieve.

If they take up a lot of space, i might as well get a new SD card for both 3DS and a new SD card for Wii U too.
