Having both the 3DS XL Pikachu and 3DS XL Luigi special editions, which are both white, I wonder about plastic discoloration.
It's a known fact white plastics turns yellow with time, and I'm not talking about heavy smoking, dust, dirt or excessive direct sunlight, just the white pigment losing it's pure whiteness over time.
On regular editions, ah well, they can be replaced I guess, but on these special editions I wonder if they ever turn or is this dependent on plastic quality?
Anyone have older Nintendo handhelds turned yellow? Is it inevitable on these 3DS XL's?
This used to be a problem with some (not all) batches of NES and SNES consoles in particular. It's caused by a reaction of the ABS plastic and the particular type of flame retardant chemical that was used to "fireproof" it. As far as i know, this problem has been fixed a long time ago by the plastic suppliers
And if i remember correctly, all 3DS models actually have a clear plastic coating on the outside covering the colour or special edition artwork. They designed the shell specifically in this way so that it would be easy to customize.
Good to hear. My kid got Playmobil toys turning yellow over a few years, I figured if a brand like Playmobil can't manage, but the above report of a DS Lite and Wii being still white, I'm less worried, thx.
