There was a time where Sega made a significant effort to preserve their legacy titles which would allowed new fans to experience games even if they're predate by them. Fast forward to modern day and the company only seems interested in rereleasing Sonic 1 & 2 on every platform imaginable (not the cool widescreen port though).
We've gone multiple console generations without proper preservation for this franchise and some titles such as the Neo Geo Pocket Color's Sonic Pocket Adventure never received a rerelease of any kind. That's what we want to look at today - Sonic titles that are at least 15 years old and are locked on their original hardware.
We're not just highlighting any old game either, these need to either be legitimately fantastic, a key part of the history of the franchise, or have potential to be improved with modern hardware. (Sorry Sonic's Schoolhouse, maybe next time)
Have you played any of the games featured in this video and are there any others you want to see rereleased?

I would kill for a chaotix re release my genesis 32x/cd combo is fragile these days
I have the chaotix 32 bit cartridge. Hopefully my mum hasn’t thrown it out.
And again, for those who don't want to watch a 12min video for the list:
Sonic Pocket Adventure
Sonic Advance Trilogy & Sonic Battle
Knuckles Chaotix
Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Saturn Version)
SegaSonic The Hedgehog
Sonic Shuffle
Sonic Heroes
I hope they eventually republish the Advance trilogy; THQ said that the publishing rights have reverted to Sega by now, and they're very solid 2D Sonics. (Even if Cream breaks the sequels wide open.)
The lack of an HD Heroes is kinda odd, considering it's the debut of the modern Chaotix, so having it around would help contextualize them for new players. Then again, Colors is still trapped on the Wii and that's one of the best 3D Sonics, period. Very odd decisions.
Also, call me crazy, but they should do a third Sonic Storybook game (Secret Rings and Black Knight were the first two). I have ideas about one based on the Labours of Hercules which would be hilarious with Sonic characters filling the roles.
i really want to play the saturn sonic 3d blast for the cd quality music, graphics, etc.
Sonic Heroes was honestly pretty good although that might be coloured by nostalgia. Adventure 2 was the better game though out of the two I had on GameCube.
"When you run fast sometimes you outrun a second chance"
What?
Old does not a classic make.
Its not listed, but I'd like a Chronicles HD, and a sequel with Atlus taking the reigns.
I would like to see another Chronicles game or at least a remake of the original
@Sabrewing lol that storybook idea sounds good on the premise alone!
Soonic Heeerooeesss, Soonic Heeeerooeesss
Actually, Sonic Heroes & the Sonic Advance trilogy were digitally re-released.
The PS2 version of Sonic Heroes is on the European & Japanese Playstation Store(s) for PS3,
And the Sonic Advance trilogy is on the Japanese Nintendo eShop for Wii U.
Also, i know this isn't really the same thing, but i believe all the Sonic games released for the original Xbox, including Heroes, are backwards compatible with the Xbox 360.
The video's still cool, though.
I'd love to have a re-release of Sonic Pocket Adventure on Switch via the Neo Geo Pocket Selection.
Sonic Pocket Adventure is a nice little game. I played it through to completion again recently.
Oddly, Knuckles Chaotix actually did see one rerelease, on a now-defunct service called GameTap. And even then, Sega pulled it off the service rather quickly. My pet theory is that Sega is just embarrassed that the game exists at all
The Sonic Rivals games for PSP and Sonic Rush games for DS were also never re-released. Also Sonic Eraser for the Mega Drive is pretty much unknown and never re-released as it was ever only distributed in Japan and South America.
I want a chaotix release on Switch so badly.
Nice to see Nintendo Life give a shout out to Sonic Battle. I love the game, and I still play my GBA just to play it. I would love it to get a re-release. Story mode is a bit of a grind, but challenge mode is just arcade fighting fun, and it's fun with a friend (I have an extra copy I can play two player with).
Also, Sonic Heroes. Really like the game, and wish it would get re-released on Switch or even PC. Unless that happens, I'll still play it from time to time on my GameCube.
@PhilKenSebben YES! That'd be perfect... especially with how comically screwed-up the ending is.
@Sabrewing More partial to a Sonic-centered take on The War of the Worlds (complete with Tails as the Journalist and Jeff Wayne's rock opera backing it up), but your idea sounds great too.
Great video but Jon is being far too kind to Knuckles Chaotix. The use of momentum is interesting and there are good ideas. I even like the characters (thanks to being a massive Sonic the Comic fan at the time). But the levels feel really empty and lifeless - mostly down to there being almost no enemies. The zones feel unpopulated and really uncomfortable to move through. It does resemble a classic Sonic game - but only on a surface level. Where those games were brimming with life, this one feels dead, almost like an unfinished tech -demo.
Would love having Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 HD on the Nintendo Switch. It is odd how Sega is not making it available on this platform. Also Jet Set Radio should be another title to bring over. As for Sonic Heroes, I enjoyed the linear gameplay while maintaining the feel of the Adventure series. Sonic Heroes was polished and a quality game. Hopefully Sega has not forgotten about it.
I still want to give Sonic Pocket Adventure a shot. Would love for it to get a rerelease of some kind.
@Sunsy I like Sonic Heroes as well, still have my GameCube copy.
@Mr-Fuggles777 @PhilKenSebben Sorry guys, but it's not likely given that Bioware was bought out by EA and Ken Penders threw lawsuit fit about the game.
Sonic R , sonic flickies island , sonic heroes , sonic adventure 1 & 2 , shadow the hedgehog & sonic the fighters
I always wanted to try Knuckles Chaotix because visually it looked a lot like Sonic 3 but now that I see how it actually plays with the momentum and springyness I think I can finally say “nah”
We need an HD re-master of Sonic X-treme: Tech Demo.
Weren't the two Sonic arcade games rereleased on the Astro City Mini?
Though SegaSonic was a trackball game, which if MAME's emulation is anything to go by, would've needed some real rework to function with joystick controls (but if anyone could pull it off, M2 could?)
As a Sonic fan I still see 06 as a very important point in the series, it introduced Silver, reintroduced Blaze, it's the last time they used the Adventure gameplay, and everything felt raised to a bigger scale. At least when compared to Heroes and ShadowTH. And suffers in terms of accessibility since it's locked behind PS3/360 consoles that are known to not last a very long time.
Unfortunately almost no one sees it like this and would rather play the Mario Party clone.
The only title on that list that sparks curiosity to me is Knuckles' Chaotix. SEGA loves their 2D Sonic games yet has not touched this game since forever.
Sonic Heroes can benefit from a widescreen release but they didn't even do this for SA1 for its Steam re-release. And since you can still get widescreen through hacks or by playing the GC version via emulation there's even less interest.
Hmm now I would like to try sonic games.
Knuckles Chaotic was absolutely terrible, so I see why THAT game was never rereleased.
When you think about it, most 3D Sonic's don't get rereleases.
Heroes (Bar PS3), Shadow, 06, Unleashed, Generations, they've all stuck on their original hardware. Sure there's backwards compatibility, but really that doesn't really count as a rerelease, you're just buying the 360 version of Generations/Unleashed to play on your XBONE/Series X/S.
I'm sure there are plenty of gamers that would pay for a HDed up Colours and other. SEGA could make a good earner from classic rereleases even if they're digital only. It would certainly fill the void for new games these days.....
Great video, I had Sonic Advance 1 and 2 but never played 3. Would love to go back to these games.
Chaotix looks and sounds pretty but the levels are giant vertical and monotonous like a product of a level generator, the rubber band mechanic is a nuisance and leads you to not play it like a Sonic game and instead gears you into constantly throwing your partner up so you can slingshot your way through the vertical levels unless you end up on Amazing Arena where the game goes to die.
@AlienX
Yeah you’re right after that game they didn’t release a game that had the follow Adventure ideas:
Various adventure fields with human npcs to talk to
A random new slow gameplay style so they can reuse assets
Awkward 3D platforming over bottomless pits
Dr.Eggman unleashing a ancient evil that he he ends up having no control over
Two Tornado stages
Heavy emphasis on creating levels based off real world locations
Super Sonic only exists as a last boss gimmick
Heroes Shadow and 06 suffer greatly from Sonic Team’s insane decision to flush the gameplay physics they nearly perfected on the Dreamcast, this decision not to have fast smooth physics and controls gave way to the increasingly reliance on automation that led to the borefest that was Forces, a game so automated that it automates your levels of control even in the countless boost down a long corridor segments, in Unleashed and Generation you could have fun in such situations by drifting back and forth like it’s F-Zero but that’s too spooky for Sonic Team.
@Shadowthrone at least in europe there was a sonic 3D blast - PC version too. (was like the saturn version) - i think i still have the cd-rom somewhere ...
I would be content for Christian Whitehead to be granted permission to remake Sonic 4 from the ground up, or just reboot Sonic entirely.
I remember playing Sonic 3D Blast on the Mega Drive and really enjoying it. The controls annoyed me immensely throughout... but there was enough joy to be found in the game to counter that frustration (when I was younger anyway, I played it again recently and it's a lot more annoying now!!)
I really am curious as to whether 3D Sonic can work... If I imagine Nintendo taking Sonic and doing a 3D World style game with him, I honestly think it could be very good. The challenge is how you incorporate Sonic's speed into the game - and SEGA have never solved it. It's sad because I also feel like SEGA never really explored it enough - at least not in released games, no doubt they did plenty behind the scenes.
I'd love to have a nice big collection of the past Sonic games. I was a teen (yup, old) when the Genesis was released and loved playing them all. How about Wacky Worlds on Genesis...that would be a nice title to re-release too. May not have been a true Sonic game, but it was fun for it's time! Other than that, I would take Sonic Shuffle, as it was a great game on the Dreamcast. I really wish Sega would re-release some of their classics (Greendog anyone) or at least continue some of their fantastic IP's! I'd love to see a new Kid Chameleon, Greendog, Chakan, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Outrun and so many more. Hate to say this, but I loved the Genesis over the Super NES and I really enjoyed the Dreamcast, which I felt was too far ahead of it's time.
Sonic Battle on GBA was awesome.
Also Sonic Colours for Wii but I don't think it's old enough yet
I would just like to see the SegaSonic arcade game finally make a home release, never got to play it and it's pretty much impossible to play. After that Knuckles Chaotix needs a re-release, and I would love to see a Sonic Advance collection. Sonic Neo Geo would also be cool.
I'm afraid to get my Genesis and 32X out and see if it still works
@thisisawesome2764 The genesis I am sure still works, but the 32X... good luck.
The Sonic Advance games on Switch would be awesome. Would also be great to have both Sonic Rush games from the DS and Sonic Colours from the DS too. Am still a fan of Sonic Heroes, have it on GameCube.
ooh I want a sonic heroes remake
I have all ways wanted to play knuckles chaotix
It looks really good
@Silly_G Your comment would hold a lot more weight if not for the fact you do this on literally any article with "sega" in title or has anything remotely to do with sega
@Doktor-Mandrake : I could say the same of you heckling me every time I do.
And my beef is with Sonic, not necessarily Sega. Sonic is the carcass that Sega refuses to let decompose.
@Silly_G replying to a comment isnt heckling
Hey not my fault you have "beef" with a video game character now is it
Remind me, what did your comment in the puoy puoy tetris article the other day have to do with sonic? Oh wait
@Silly_G Ok?
If someone replying to your comment (reply as in, you know, hit that big button that says REPLY on it) on the internet bothers you this much, then you shouldn't be on the internet full stop
Dont worry, I wont continue engaging you, as I have already proven my point.
I'll just wait until the next Sega related article for that
Edit: DELETED YOUR POST DID YOU? LOL THANKS FOR PROVING MY POINT
@Doktor-Mandrake : LOOoOooL. 🤣🤣🤣
Trust you to whip out the "triggered" card. Some people would call that projection. Not me though. I would never make such an insinuation.
@Silly_G Gonna break my own rule here
No, projection is saying you only have problem with sonic, not sega, even though you were clearly in the puoy puoy tetris article the other day calling sonic and then bashing on sega in general
That, and having "beef" with fictional characters, is projection. "Triggered" is another word for "bothered" and you fixate on a single word simply to dodge the fact that you're a Sega basher and not a very good one
Again, it is not my problem you have beef with fictional video game characters. To me I am not overly that emotional over video games, why would i project over them?
drops mic
@Doktor-Mandrake : Dude, my "beef" was purely rhetorical, yet you have rentlessly ragged on about it as if it were some blood feud, and have been totally obnoxious about a facetious remark. It was a joke, darling. Do you get jokes? Maybe it wasn't funny to you. Frankly, I don't care. Get over it.
The fact that you parrot inane platitudes such as "triggered" and "drops mic" speaks volumes of your impetuous myopia.
spills lasagne
Whoops.
@Silly_G Surely you dont get jokes as the point is they are meant to be funny, a statement like "old doesnt make it a classic" is objectively not a "joke".. your comment in the puoy puoy tetris article was not a "joke".
Your excuse is the only joke!
Let me make this so simple, even someone like you can understand it.
I dont like animal crossing, I think it looks boring and kinda dumb
Do you see me on animal crossing articles? Nope!
Where as you, intentionally click any article with mention of sega and sonic.. with the intent of spreading negativity, before you've even clicked the article
Also having relied to you it is obvious you like to drag out arguments to make it look like you had a point. This is called being stubborn.
Your comments in this and the puoy puoy tetris article was unjustified and clearly in context are not "jokes". That's a reach.
@Doktor-Mandrake : Except that I do enjoy (some) Sega games and have played both Puyo Puyo Tetris games, hence my comments. You are making sweeping judgements based on a couple of passing remarks.
If a few passing facetious remarks "trigger" you this much, then please do us both a favour and click that convenient "Ignore" button. You are being needlessly pedantic and unpleasant over what amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things.
@Silly_G Maybe if you could keep your argument straight, you've gone from
-my only beef is with sonic, not sega
To
-I was just joking bro
Either way you admit to clicking on these articles with the sole intent of bashing on a video game character.
And no, I wont hit ignore. I replied because I wanted to point out that your comments dont hold any weight or real value. That.was.it
And if you like puoy puoy tetris, I'll let you in on a little secret....
....
......
...sonic is not the developer, hence not the one who introduced that minor bug you cried about.
@Doktor-Mandrake : The only wailing going on here is coming from you. I made a few remarks that served as both a subtle critique and jest. Nothing more. Nothing less.
It's not my fault you lack the perception to read between the lines.
Also, "Ignore" button is your friend. Please ignore me. I insist.
@Silly_G Critique means it would have to be thoughtful and constructive lmfao
Didnt know saying "everything sonic touches turns to trash" and "old doesnt mean classic" counts as critque
Ironically me pointing out your behaviour has been more meaningful than your clutching at straws
I know you're a pseudo intellectual and all but please stop misusing words. You barely have a grasp on the word 'reply'.
@Doktor-Mandrake : Seriously, just go away. Could you be any more obnoxious?
The fact that you feel the need to end your comment with "drops mic" to feel as though you have "won" speaks wonders of your insecurity. There are times when I give long constructive feedback and times when I make brief remarks. You are nitpicking at TWO comments and resorting to petty personal attacks against somebody you know nothing about over something that is so insignificant that I am frankly embarrassed that I have even bothered to indulge a waste of time like you for this long.
A wiser man warned not to argue with a certain type of person. I shall heed their advice and not indulge your petulant indignation any further.
@Silly_G YOUR ORIGINAL POSTS WERE OBNOXIOUS BY THE VERY DEFINITION SMART GUY, YOURE IN NO POSITION TO USE THAT WORD
Saying that YOUR obnoxious comments hold no weight was not "personal insults" either. You did that.
Yes you should of taken that wise mans advice sooner rather than clutch at straws like you had, and argue with people smarter then you.
Because if what you're saying now was true, you would of just said exactly that. Liar.
I've looked into your post history and you do this often, check mine if you want I barely post.
