Details for Netflix's upcoming Resident Evil series have leaked online after they were accidentally uploaded on a press-only website.
According to the synopsis – which has now been removed – the series will take place in the fictional town of Clearfield, Maryland – a setting which hasn't previously been mentioned in Resident Evil canon. To those of you expecting to see the streets of Raccoon city realised on the small screen, we can only apologise.
Clearfield will star alongside the infamous Umbrella Corporation, the decommissioned Greenwood Asylum and the nearby Washington, D.C., which means we could see some thematic similarities between this series and Overkill's failed Walking Dead video game, which featured the North American capital in its trailer. The other news is that the series takes place 26 years after the creation of the T-Virus.
Resident Evil has already spawned an incredibly successful movie franchise which has generated more than $1.2 billion globally. Netflix has already adapted The Witcher to widespread critical acclaim; while that was based on a multimedia property that includes video games, you could argue that there's plenty of crossover between its audience and the people who will be tuning in to this new series.

Thank you for this excellent piece of news from last week. Brilliant job.
I really don't understand rude comments like the one above this one. It was new to me. If its old news to you, fine, but why be like that and not just ignore it?
So leon in his 40's
This may be from last week, but I haven't seen yet. I mean, not everyone stays 24/7 in front of a screen reading websites, so I'm glad NL posted this.
I swear like this has people in a boardroom meeting like
"Hey you know that franchise everyone knows and loves and should get a good adaption? Yeah let's do something of that but without the soul"
@RazumikhinPG Thanks for the excellent and informative comment, too. Sorry this news was a whopping 3 days late (well, 2 days, if you go by the source link) and it's been the weekend, too. Maybe you should start your own site and man it 7 days a week?
So I'm guessing it's set in a town named after Claire Redfield?
@Damo Leak was on the 7th (last week), as can be seen from the tweet on your own article. I'm not going to start my own site, there's plenty of other sites on the internet that already do the strenuous task of posting news on time.
@RazumikhinPG The 7th was Friday, and we're 8 hours ahead of the US. So chances are, we missed it on Friday and we run a skeleton staff at the weekend, so news coverage is drastically reduced.
Let me know when you start your site so I can pop over and leave pointless comments on there, too.
Awesome, I'm pretty excited about this. I love the movies even though they got a little out there towards the 2nd half of the films.
@Damo If this was the only "news" on here that's actually late, I wouldn't bother, but it seems to be a recurring thing. If you don't have staff for the weekends, maybe you need more of those affiliate links spam, I mean, posts and get some extra cash for some weekend overtimers. But I dunno how to organize a news site, just how to read one. Which is what I've been doing for ages here, yet didn't expect such a defensive posture from one of the staff.
If you can't take criticism, close the comments?
@RazumikhinPG they only work Monday to Friday, what else do you expect from a site with the word "Life" in it's name? Complete coverage? Think they are considering renaming to Nintendo Part Time Life.
@RazumikhinPG There's constructive criticism, and then there's being a sarcastic arse about a free product (news) that you're receiving. Not to mention you have a choice of multiple sites you can browse, as you stated. Yes, it's a tad behind, but I browse this site for Nintendo news, not for news about a live-action take on some decrepit old zombie franchise.
If you can't handle your own sarcasm in return, don't be an arse.
@KingBowser86 Excuse me, free product? Do you know how many ads I see every day from this website alone?
@RazumikhinPG I would suggest stop comimg here if it bugs you that much.
I had no idea Resident Evil was being adapted to a Netflix show. This has me interested. Also, just noticing now, but Dolph Lundgren should be cast as Tyrant. Thanks for the post Nintendo Life!
@TechaNinja Seriously. Their Witcher adaptation is low budget garbage that takes dramatic unnecessary liberties with the source material, and their Locke and Key adaptation looks horrendous. I will still watch this Resident Evil adaptation like a fool and hope they've done better, but I doubt it. The Witcher series is doing way too well. :/
@RazumikhinPG It's called free with ads. It's actually free for you, but you should endure the harsh ads in the site. I feel sorry for you.
And then, how is it that you aren't using something like Adblock, or one of those phone browsers that block ads for Android/iOS for stopping getting all the spam?
If this site is so behind in news like you say, go read another place. None forces you to visit this site.
@Olmectron I've been reading this site for almost 10 years now. I read it mostly at work and don't have any adblock in place. Also wouldn't want to because I know that's how these pages earn money so they can pay their staff who write news.
Nice, i want to watch RE series show on Netflix, action in different city too, running away from zombie again wohooo!
@RazumikhinPG I have no idea what you originally posted since that comment is gone, but going to articles and posting "old news" is absolutely useless. In this case, it even derailed the comment thread and accomplished nothing but upsetting other users.
@Eel I can still see every comment, but I wouldn't be surprised if the OP has managed to hide it from sight for other users.
I wouldn't say it's useless. If no one points out when something isn't right (or not as good), staff just assumes everything is perfect. And not all readers are sheep.
@RazumikhinPG That as opposed to paying money for a subscription to the site, like New York Times or Economist. Hosting and maintenance have to be paid somehow.
And since you can't understand that, I'll tell you like I told crotchety callers at the radio station: Tell ya what, since you're so dissatisfied, we'll send you a refund for what you paid.
Edit: I know what's coming, you'll say, "Well, what if I want muh money for the ads I'm seeing?" Then you need to write your government representatives because that isn't how any of this works.
@KingBowser86 No one is asking for a refund.
Bloody hell, do you guys also break up with your girl/boyfriend once they make a mistake after you've been dating for almost 10 years? Lol.
Also, keep your condescending tone down, I understand very well how ads work, you silly billy. That's why I don't block them here. Things may be free, but there is still money to be made out of free things.
@RazumikhinPG Just going "old news!" really, seriously, honestly, makes nothing better, it just makes the messenger seem pedantic. Which more often than not results in backlash.
So let's please not. There's better ways to improve the site.
@Eel the correct wording was actually "Thank you for this excellent piece of news from last week. Brilliant job."
Please don't discredit my effort in sarcasm.
@Thaliard now casltevania was a great adaption to anime and the remix of vampire killer so good
@RazumikhinPG Not wanting to repeat myself, but the item we're talking about only got reported late last week, and as I've said, the weekend isn't considered "full" coverage. Unlike a lot of other sites, we actually pay our writers (most of which are full time employees) so no, we don't have complete coverage of the weekend. That said, I think we still do a good job of covering all of the key stories over those two days.
But anyway, as the majority of the comments on here attest, it seems you're in the minority, so it's all good.
@RazumikhinPG Not where you were headed with your posts, but hey, this is better than the alternative.
Also, yes, high break-up/divorce rates in the U.S., ironically.
And no, I will use this tone when I want - when someone's being ridiculous.
@RazumikhinPG Hah. Well, that explains the reaction. That's like a 1000 snarky needles.
Ok now let's move on and let people use this comment thread for what it is.
(That includes you @KingBowser86)
@Eel Agreed.
Looking forward to this!
Holy macaroni, Batman. Some people have way too much free time on their hands when they start complaining about the news on a website they themselve chose to visit. Just go away if you can't bear the "old" news and leave it for those who don't mind. Problem solved.
Anyways, back on point, I never found the Resident Evil movies to be particuliary enjoyable. They always seemed to me like B-movie grade fare only with more budget, and with only a remote link to the franchise they're supposed to be part of.
Now, I don't have any issue with a RE series moving ahead in time. Could be interesting if done right. And I'm not meaning "right" as in "respecting any tidbit of fact that came from the games before". I'll leave those details to the rabbid fanboys to debate irrationnaly on the web over the following days/week/months. No, I simply mean respectful to the source material to some degree (can take some liberties here and there I don't mind) and looking like part of the storyline (not a completely different alternate story of some kind like the movies). Seeing what happenned to some old characters from the game series might be interesting. Same thing with Umbrella Corp. It's set many years after, so I guess this will mean some stories to tell. Some incidents and stories will obviously be referenced in there (to give some backstory).
Colour me genuinely curious, but being handled by Netflix doesn't mean anything quality-wise. I thought the Witcher was great, but that's me. And from what I watched from the Castlevania series, it seems decent too. My main issue would be that if it ends up being decent, Netflix could "cancel" the series on a whim, like they do with so many other series, and leave viewers without "closure".
They need to get Jensen Ackles for Leon.
@TechaNinja I can't believe I forgot about that! Yes, Castlevania is incredibly good. Probably the reason I had any faith in Netflix to begin with.
@Damo nice to see comments being deleted now that you don't agree with. You can't seem to take a little joke (or any criticism).
@panthro that was me
As I said before, let's not detail this comment section anymore.
I visit a handful of video game news websites regularly, and I see “old” stories being posted all the time. I think it’s fine, so long as all the important stories get covered eventually. Game Informer, for example, has lots of exclusive features but regularly posts about stuff a week or two later, or sometimes not at all, so...I’d say NL does a great job!
@Seananigans So let me get this right - we should be working weekends now as well as in the week? This isn't "feedback", it's being totally unrealistic.
Is it live action or animated? (my interest depends entirely on it being animated...
So this is going to be the Walking Dead with that title scrawled out and Resident Evil pasted over it ?
If so then I'll pass, I'd rather see a series taking place during and in between the original 3 games.
@Damo
It's like you didn't even read anything beyond the first line.
Cause there is plenty feedback in comment 38.
Here let me link it https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/02/looks_like_netflixs_resident_evil_series_wont_be_set_in_raccoon_city#comment5442949
Capcom is looking at the Witcher and seeing money signs. They can't wait to get RE3 remake out the door
Well- it can’t be worse than the theatrical films eh?
What am I talking about, this sounds much worse!
@Damo You guys post more than Gematsu/PC Gamer on the weekends all the time 👍
*Goes to the comments section to see reactions to the article
Sees arguments about 'old news' instead*
*Sigh *
On topic, while I wouldn't mind a Resi Evil series, I'm a bit sceptical on how well it'll turn out, even moreso than The Witcher; at least that had a series of books to draw from, this has a series of games that aren't really known for their stories.
Still, I thought The Witcher would flop and that didn't, so who knows?
Dolph Lundgren sue Capcom for Mr X looking like him?
@KitsuneNight yeah way too many zombie apocalypse shows on at the moment. Only thing that can save this is showing the development of the characters from the game, eg: how Leon went from boy scout cop to Agent and Jill's development as well. Agree with you on the 1st three movies, maybe add Resident evil 0 in there as well.
@Seananigans Actually, professional sites with full time staff post LESS than we do at the weekend. That's because, like many businesses, they expect their staff to work five days and have the weekend off. I'm assuming the "other sites" you mention are ones run by small teams who rely on volunteers (which we did not so long ago). Liam Doolan actually posts at the weekend for us, and we schedule content like features and reviews for Saturday and Sunday, too. But please don't make yourself look stupid by insisting that the majority of the world's professional games press work 24/7, because they don't. 😂
@Agramonte Clearly we don't post enough for some people.
Nice to see Dolph Lungren in it.
Man, Bill Nighy as a scary big dude? Though admittedly he was pretty great as that squid face from Pirates.
Those complaining about "the T-Virus being discovered 26 years ago" need to realise that the T-virus was discovered many years before the outbreak in racoon City, due to the discovery of the progenitor virus.
@Seananigans If there are plenty of sites that do what we do better, why are you wasting your time in this comments section?
@Seananigans As you can clearly see from the vast majority of replies on this thread, most of our readers are reasonable enough to realise that A) a news story posted 3 days after it breaks (and over a weekend) isn't an issue, and B) they don't expect full time employees to work Saturday and Sunday like they're normal working days.
Oh, and it's my day off today, thanks for asking
@Seananigans So we schedule stuff that's yet to happen? Genius. You're clearly an expert at this. How many sites have you run, by the way?
You had no "constructive criticism" to begin with, so yeah, we were done ages ago
So many entitled little losers on this site. "Why is the news late? Why can't you run your website better?"
I feel bad for Nintendo Life. Having to deal with cranky little children in need of a nap.
@Damo The way you are talking is so unprofessional. Grow up. There are trolls on sites and there's people who will disagree with you. Learn to take criticism and quite acting entitled. I love this site but this whole exchange has heavily changed my tune.
@Damo I should actually have said said "I loved this site". My bad.
