It feels like we've been talking about it forever, but the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie is still a couple of weeks away from sprinting onto our oversized cinema screens. Despite the fact that we haven't even seen it yet, Jim Carrey - who plays the role of Dr. Robotnik - has noted that he "wouldn't mind" doing a sequel.
In an interview with Jake Hamilton, the actor brought up the part as one which has "so much room" to be further explored. You can see him talking about it in the video below (at around the 3:33 mark), and we've gathered his full comment for you in written form, too:
"I wouldn’t mind going to do another one because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ... There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis."
We guess we should wait to see if the first one's any good first, but would you like to see more live-action Sonic films in the future? Let us know in the comments.

I'm so glad they are calling him Robotnik
Breaking: actor wants more acting jobs!
The film has franchise potential but I guess it depends on what the box office is for the first one. It could go either way and depends on whether the film is actually good or not (I'm not too sure at this stage).
I will admit it looks good. Hopefully it is. I'm not a Jim fan but I can push past that.
I suspect it will be a fun movie and Jim will be a big part of that fun.
Love Jim Carrey, usually willling to give a film a chance if he's involved. Would love to see him in a more serious role soon though, he's a lot better than he gets credit for. Also amazing how good he looks for a fella that's nearly 60.
@Bobb what else could they call him?
@setezerocinco Eggman, maybe?
Of course he would love a sequel, what other work has he gotten lately? Jim Carrey's career is on life support.
@setezerocinco Eggman, I guess
@Bobb Very much agreed. Robotnik is a much better name than Eggman. I understand that Eggman is his original Japanese name and I guess they reverted it to keep the name consistent worldwide, but he'll always be Robotnik to me.
And I'm up for watching one, Carey!
This is the same Jim Carrey who has only done two sequels of his own films - both of which were critically mauled (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Dumb & Dumber To).
@antster1983 Exactly why this would be news. Jim Carrey is famous for refusing to make sequels.
Whoa who’s ready for sequel bait bs where he only looks Robotnik for under 30 seconds in this awful movie because that worked well for Luthor in that awful Batman v Superman film.
I’m watching day one. Jimmy should be a laugh.
Jim carrey is literally the only reason to see this movie. At least he's almost always a scream!
Back on topic, I think Jim Carrey was a brilliant casting choice. +1 for the earlier comment that if I do see this movie, it will be because of him, and secondarily I like how they listened to the fans and fixed Sonic’s original nightmarish character build lol.
@needmorecowbell I feel the same way. I was going to skip this movie just like so many others, but Jim and listening to fan feedback made me want to give it a chance. I'm not even a Sonic fan
It great that they put a household name in this film. (Well 2 if you include Sonic aswell😜) Jim has made some stinkers but hes also pulled off his fair share of great films in the past ( Liar Liar, Ace Ventura,Bruce almighty, The mask etc) and is genuinely a funny guy. Just watch his out takes at the end of his movies.
Just me or is the audio flipped sides on this video?
Just by looking at his performance you can see that he just had a blast playing Robotnik.
I'm not much of a Jim Carrey guy, but I definitely think that he was the perfect choice for Robotnik, and portrays him incredibly well.
This is a Jim carrey movie first and foremost. It's all designed for him to be Ace Ventura all over again. Wow that movie is such cringe now. it is geared toward 90s kids taking their own kids to see it.
Ace Ventura as a villain with a big moustache. That alone justifies watching the film.
Can't wait for this!
@TechaNinja It is. The audio is cortected later on though.
The interviewer is horrible in this clip and it is difficult to watch until he shuts up and lets Jim Carrey talk. I think I want to see this film but I imagine most of the better segments are in the trailer. It just looks shallow and uninspired. For instance the scene where he comes from the ocean, they leave the fish on his head too long and there is no real setup for the fluffy mode he goes into. That change he does could really be made into some good segues.
The male lead, James Marsden, could possibly be typecast now. I just re-watched Hop, which has some funny moments, and he appears to play the same character in Sonic.
Somewhere Mario and Luigi are laughing and muttering "its not so easssy ehhh?"
The Dr. Robotnik i know is chubby. Jim Carrey as the Dr. looks like Dr. Robotnik on meth.
I like Carey. Always have. Don’t care much for his weird paintings, but he’s always entertaining to watch.
I think he was best casting choice for Eggman.
@sleepinglion I see this opinion a lot. There are countless examples of actors who don’t want to do sequels right?
Jim Carrey is the only reason I have any interest in this project. He’s a total treasure and should be appreciated as such.
@SkullDragr he’s an artist, puppet master, painter and creative Titan. He’s done more in the last several decades than you could ever dream of accomplishing. What have YOU been doing with your life?
@antster1983 funny- I love both of those films and their previous chapters with equal affection. Hahaha.
@LUIGITORNADO Jim Carrey needs the work
@Bobb well, Sega did make it official many year's ago on his actual name. So his full name is Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.
Eggman is more like a nickname/insult that Sonic gives him.
@GamerD Yeah! After all the "western/eastern" shenanigans, I think it was good sport of Sega to make the western non-canon name, well, canon.
I don't mean to say that Robotnik is a better name, it's just the name I grew with. Lately the games only call him Eggman, so I was happy to see him officially Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik in the movie.
While Jim Carrey is by no means rotund, I hope they make a way to introduce his nickname/insult in some way.
Spoiler alert. In the sequel, Sonic's son takes on Robotnik go get vengeance for his dad.
@antster1983 I love Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Screw the critics.
Carrey likes doing almost all roles, though. He's a go getter and usually positive as well as quirky, so it isn't really saying too much of the quality haha
@Bobb I wholeheartedly agree with that, never been eggman for me.
@Bobb Even though Eggman is his "real" Japanese name all along, always thought it was lame. I "get it" he's shaped like an egg and also it is a Beatles song. Robotnik...just conjures up so much. You immediately see red, robots, Soviet futurism, etc. SO great.
