Donald_M commented on Review: Wrecking Crew (Wii U eShop / NES):

@SteveW The level editor was part of the original game, but could only save four levels and the save function required an accessory never released outside Japan, since cartridge-based saves didn't come along until about a year later. So, an old feature made usable by current hardware.

@unrandomsam Yes, it's JUST LIKE books with cliffhangers . . .

You know, some DLC is undeniably bad, some is worth it, the claim that it's all held back content is childish paranoia. I have yet to see a logical argument against DLC as a whole.

@XCWarrior So, something multiplayer FPSs still do and one company that gives all of its DLC for free (That, by the way, rakes in the money selling other people's games through its online storefront. Other publishers are focused on selling their own games.) proves what exactly? It doesn't prove me wrong. DLC is not a scam, it's a revenue scheme. You don't have to buy it.

Valve do charge for one thing in TF2 - hats. Some DLC is worth is, some isn't. The vast majority of it is hats, as in you don't have to buy it, you don't need it to enjoy the game, you can ignore it as I do, or froth at the mouth over the very existence of it, like you're doing.

You've allowed your hatred of DLC blind you to sense, reason and reality. There's no arguing with someone like you. Go froth in the corner some more, I'm done with you.

@LEGEND_MARIOID Eh, sometimes they'll go overboard on the DLC a little, like all the ridiculous cosmetic DLC for Saints Row the Third and Sleeping Dogs, but I don't consider it an insult. You know who pushes stuff like that? Publishers in trouble who don't understand how DLC works and think it's free money. I find that funny. Desperation can be amusing. THQ is history now and Squeenix is circling the drain. I can't say I feel sorry for them.

@XCWarrior That's just it, you don't have to pay for anything. You don't lose out on anything by not having the Coin Rush stages in NSMB or the additional content in Fire Emblem, both of which are complete games with a lot of content and in the case of Fire Emblem got a good bit of free DLC on top of the paid stuff. It's completely optional stuff that those who are interested can buy and those who aren't can safely ignore. Honestly, a few companies have been pretty crappy with their DLC policies butfor the most part, I see it done responsibly more than not. I've encountered very little DLC that wasn't obviously additional content on top of a complete game and in most of the cases where it did feel a little like stuff was held back, it was stuff I could do without. Your claims of developers holding back content and lying about it is not supported by reality, but whatever. Enjoy your fantasy world of adolescent cynicism, Captain Emo.

@XCWarrior

No, 90% of people are okay with DLC as long as the game it's released for is complete and doesn't feel compromised for the sake of selling additional content. Either you didn't read the poll results very closely, or you're ignoring what people actually said so you can make a cheap point based on your own prejudices.

Now THAT'S sad.

I'm not against DLC in principle, but it really depends. I won't waste money on cosmetic items for games, but I'll consider map packs, mission packs or additional characters provided the price is fair for the content provided.

To the people wondering how much Nintendo paid for this advertisement, I'm not sure you're aware how late night talk shows work. Half the time is spent talking with people who have something to promote: a new movie, a new tv show, a new book, a new album. When it's a video game, suddenly it's a bad thing? It's promotion, it's clever promotion and no, they didn't pay for it, the ability to promote their product on a popular tv show is the payment. Jeez, people.

I don't necessarily mean as DLC, but this reminds me of how much I'd like to see further expansions of the Mario franchise featuring supporting characters.

Another Princess Peach game would be great, maybe with Daisy and Birdo along for the ride as playable characters as well.

My ultimate dream however is Wicked Wario Bros. a Wario and Waluigi centric platformer that would mix elements of traditional Mario platforming with elements from the Wario Land games.

It would start out seemingly in an alternate version of the Mushroom Kingdom where Wario and Waluigi are the heroes and the Mario Bros. can only look on jealously. Then, after you beat the game in a boss fight against a Mario and Luigi whose jealousy has driven them to extremes, you find out the whole thing was in Wario's head and the two have actually spent the whole time ripping off the Mushroom Kingdom. You then unlock a set of bonus levels about what really happened, with Mario and Luigi chasing after the Wario Bros. and cleaning up their mess.

Donald_M commented on Super Smash Bros. Will Have The Same Character...:

It should be noted that all Sakurai is doing here is acknowledging that tweaks will be necessary to make the game work on 3DS. He's saying nothing about 3DS holding back the Wii U version, that's all on the person writing the article. Relax people, it'll be okay.

Obviously the 3DS version won't look as good as the Wii U, but I don't see how the 3DS hardware would limit the roster. I don't know how good it was, but I do know that one Shonen Jump fighting game had like 50 playable characters and 300 characters all together with support characters factored in and that was on the DS!

Also, great rap and I love how gamer friendly and just geek friendly in general Jimmy's show is. It's awesome that he'll be hosting the Tonight Show soon. I might actually watch is soon.

Down with Leno! Don't let the door hit you on the way out, old man!

Donald_M commented on Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This...:

Currently I'm dividing my time pretty equally between AC: New Leaf and Fire Emblem: Awakening, along with short daily sessions with Crosswords Plus and Brain Age: Concentration Training. Plenty more games just sitting on my SD, I'll get around to them once Fire Emblem's off my plate. The other three are pretty much part of my daily routine for the foreseeable future.

Donald_M commented on Review: Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya (3DS...:

I loved the Shining Force games on the Genesis and never got to play this, so I snatched it right up. Glad to hear it holds up pretty well. Now then, how about Shining Force 1 & 2 for 3DS Virtual Console? They'd be an instant buy for me, not hesitation. Hell, there's a lot of Genesis games I'd like to see on 3DS. Not sure why Nintendo chooses to focus so much on handheld games for 3DS Virtual Console, the 3DS can certainly handle any SNES or Genesis game they throw at it. How about some TurboGrafix 16 games while they're at it?

Really, the Virtual Console scene on the 3DS is pretty disappointing. It could be so much more than it is and there's no good reason why it isn't.

The Wii Fit Trainer is a hilarious character and I think it's awesome that she's in the game, both because she's so out of left field and because it adds another cool female character to the list. I do hope the Animal Crossing Villager has a female option as an alternate costume.

Animal Crossing may be a "casual" game, but these kinds of games tend to attract a pretty hardcore following. There aren't many other games out there that attract as fanatical a devotion, or that are as good at encouraging daily play and long term play.

Gamers who call themselves "hardcore" while sneering at the likes of Animal Crossing and other casual titles are posers. A true gamer knows there's value in all kinds of games and having a wide variety of games that appeals to all kinds of people is of benefit to everyone.

Donald_M commented on Not All Super Smash Bros. Characters Will Make...:

In the modern world of DLC, there's no such thing as "not enough time."

Seriously though, I'd quite happily pay for character DLC for the new Smash Bros. provided it's reasonably priced. Of course, free would be good too.
