The Tokyo Game Show is well underway, with thousands of eager gamers arriving in the city to sample some of the latest and greatest games. The expo is also home to the Japan Game Awards, and Nintendo was among the big winners that were announced this week.
It was a good outcome for both The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, for starters, with both Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sun and Moon lifting major awards.
Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award
Pokemon GO Project Team
Global Award Japanese Product
Pokemon Sun and Moon
Best Sales Award
Pokemon Sun and Moon
Both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokémon Sun and Moon were also among the 'Award for Excellence' winners, with Monster Hunter XX also making the cut.
Most notably, Breath of the Wild also secured the Grand Award, the top prize to be won in the Japan Game Awards.
We doubt it'll be the last game of the year-style honour that Breath of the Wild receives; it'll surely come up regularly as awards season kicks into gear later this year.

But of course! Easily my fav Zelda game. It stinks that I can't play XX yet though...
Did anyone expect different results??
Well deserved! Breath of the Wild is still keeping me busy six months later!
BotW is one of the major highlights of an all-around amazing year in gaming. Well deserved.
I can't remember when I played a game I loved as much as BotW. Maybe Ocarina. So my all time favorite game was a Zelda game and now it's been replaced by another Zelda game.
Makes sense. Both franchises are enjoyable.
Wow...
I just tamed Ruta at 85 hours played in Zelda BOTW. I do wander for hours at a time, looking for nothing in particular, but my oh my, is it a Huge Wonderful game!
It surpassed any and all expectation I had!* Well deserved Nintendo!
Very well deserved. I can't wait to jump back in to BotW with the upcoming DLC. Absolutely love exploring that world.
Well deserved.
As expected. Can't wait for the GOTY Awards and for Zelda to win most of them!
Well deserved for Zelda: BOTW. I couldn't care less about Pukemon.
Of course. It's Open World Zelda. It's going to battle the GotY awards out with Mario Odyssey.
Words fail me when it comes to describing how in awe I am of A Breath of the Wild. Zelda (NES) > Zelda (SNES) > Ocarina & Majora's Mask (N64) > Wind Waker (GC) > Skyward Sword (Wii) >>>>> A Breath of the Wild (Switch).
Yes, I left out Twilight Princess because (for me) while a solid Action/Adventure title, I feel it fell short of the innovation and experimentation I had selfishly come to expect from the strongest franchise of all time in terms of depth of quality.
@TreesenHauser its a huge game, even after beating ganon, all the main quests , more than 20 side quests, 21 shrine quests and 92 discovered shrines stills got only 23% of the game complete, and with + than 250 hours of gameplay, its a great game, well deserved.
Any game that beats out BOTW this year better be unbelievable. Because BOTW is one of the best games I have played in my life.
I am not suggesting it can't be topped or that it's my all time favorite, but simply anything that bests it must be really incredible!
@Heavyarms55 It better be on the Switch too! (Luckily, Mario Odyssey is O.<)
Much deserved! BotW is without doubt the best, most engrossing game I've played and I've been playing since original game and watch. 180h deep, just got last shrine, 410 seeds, time for Calamity Ganon.
