The indie games making the jump to the Switch eShop keep on coming thick and fast. Slated for Q1 2018, we have Original Journey, which is described as a sci-fi action-adventure with elaborately detailed pencil art.
Developed by Bonfire Entertainment and to be published by Another Indie, this game has already won five awards, including the prestigious Best Student Game at IGF China 2015.
Original Journey blends an eclectic mix of gameplay elements including shooting, platforming, tower-defense, racing, and puzzles into a cohesive experience with a strong narrative arc, all set on a mysterious and constantly changing world.
The Ato, a race of space faring vegetation, embark on a quest to save their home world. Only the legendary Origin Stone, an artifact of unlimited power and rumored to be on the ominous Planet Shadow, can deliver salvation to their people. By invading the procedurally generated Shadow World, the Ato can hope to survive, but how far will they go to save themselves?
Join the attacking Ato army and control The Rookie. Equip customizable mech armor with buffs that affect his speed, life recovery, fall damage and more. Arm the Rookie with turrets and over a dozen upgradeable weapons, each with a distinct playstyle best suited to certain situations, then explore Planet Shadow and battle its inhabitants.
Take a look at the trailer above and let us know if Original Journey is on your must-have list for early next year.

looks pretty cool I would not mind getting this one.
It looks awesome. I love the pencil art. Stands out really well in a sea of 8-bit and Flash looking games.
It looks great, but I must admit I would find it more appealing with colour. I know that's not the point, but still...
Surprised they aren't worried about being confused with Journey, which I thought Switch was getting when I read the title.
Graphically looks really good, storyline seems pretty cool, but just looks way to hectic for my liking.
Art style is really cool....but I'm afraid it might cause confusion during gameplay as it's hard to make out foreground/background and certain elements when they're all stylized in the same way and with the same color-scheme.
@chiptoon I agree, it's a really cool art style, but I think it would have been made better by color pencil art. I'll need to look into the game a bit more, but I think this may be a case of simply try to be different for difference' sake.
@Bunkerneath I really like this style of game, but I think the lack of color is going to be agitated even more by the lack of color. I think it's going to be hard to tell what's going on at times.
I dig this, will be on my watch. A sequel with pencil color style will be awesome!
It looks like fun but the style just looks as if they slapped a filter on it instead of actually rendering it in a pencil art style.
What is keeping Indie Developers from Creating it's own Indie system and just releasing through that type of Venue. Granted Nintendo is a huge name to be going through. But an Indie System done the right way could seriously be alot of fun. Any thoughts? It also seems that something like this could actually take off. **Wonders what Atari is working on**
I really dislike games like this. We don't like that dark/gray games. Seen it many times on xbox 360 on live arcade as well. Give me some colours please. We ain't living in gameboy black/white era. Stop being lazy!
Too grey - hurts my eyes just looking at it. I'm sorry but I can't just go from playing Splatoon (2) to playing this. It's too jarring.
@Windy Lol, you made me think of the Ouya with that one.
Reminds me of Ballpoint Universe for the Wii U... that was a good one.
Love these games but not buying, everything looks so similar I'm struggling to follow the ship.
My eyesight is really bad so things like this can kill a game for me.
Even gameboy games made it easier to see what was going on as the ship wasn't the same colour as the background.
@PAHTK im actually passing for the same reasons. My eyes are really getting bad. Im actually near sighted so gaming on 3ds is still perfect for me but gaming on the TV is another story. If I dont have my glasses forget it.
@ThatNyteDaez I was actually interested in Ouya when it was first announced but didnt take the chance on it. I guess it was a good thing. But somebody could seriously do a better job. Im glad were getting a bunch on Switch. Its been fun so far.
This game looks like it's right up my alley. The grayscale doesn't bother me, I haven't played many games with a gimmicky artstyle, so to me, it just makes this stand out.
@Windy Thing is, I'm not sure there's really a need for an "indie" system with so many different avenues devs can work with, plus the Big 3 companies (Sony, MS, Nintendo) will just continue to support their own systems because that's what will make them money. The loyalists (and casual gamers) won't want/be able to shell out extra money for a second system.
Besides, Valve (Steam) is really the closest you can get to seeing this vision, but the entry point for a good PC rig is not cheap.
Randomized levels...aaaand I'm off!
@Kilroy Somebody out there will have that urge to build something from the ground up with these indie devs as the driving force. I just hope the next Ouya type system is done right. They had such a opportunity with Ouya. It sounded good from the get go. I guess the execution was poor. Im actually looking forward to what Atari has in store for us.
