Entering Agon Wastes
Image: Nintendo Life

Welcome to our next entry in our full walkthrough of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

This time, we’ll be taking on the Agon Wastes and entering the harmful realm of Dark Aether. We’d best get started because there’s a lot to get through in the Agon Wastes.

Agon Wastes

A sandy area full of pirates. Excellent.

Scan Entry - Agon Bearerpod

After you get out of the elevator, turn around and you’ll see an Agon Bearerpod, scan it to get its logbook entry.

Scan Entry - Lumite

Into Agon Wastes
Image: Nintendo Life

Once you enter the small area before the Agon Wastes, you’ll see Lumites crawling along the wall, scan one to unlock a logbook entry, and then make quick work of them.

Scan Entry - Sandgrass

As you proceed through the area, be sure to scan the sandgrass before going through the door for its logbook entry. After moving on, you have properly entered the Agon Wastes.

Scan Entry - Sandigger

After dropping down into the murky area that is the Agon Waste, a sandigger will spawn in, quickly scan it as it wiggles up to you before dealing with it with your trusty blaster.

Scan Entry - Sandbats

After dealing with the sandigger, look up, and you will see a flock of Sandbats; they’ll flutter around a bit but managing to scan one will secure its logbook entry.

Moving forward, on your right will be another red blast shield door, fire a missile at it to open it, go through, and you will find a save point. After a well-deserved rest, head back outside.

Hop over the clearing and jump up, heading right until you come across a large rock with a crack in it. Shooting a missile at it will cause it to fall and forge a path for you to proceed. Go forward and shoot another rock face to cause it to fall down to continue on your path.

Bridgemaking
Image: Nintendo Life

Going over the bridge you just made, turn left and circle your way around, jumping over the gaps. Cross the bridge under a large vertical system on lenses and go through the door to the next area.

Turn into a ball and roll up the tunnel and over the railing; take note of the odd structure you pass through, as we’ll come back to this when relevant.

Scan Entry - Pirate Trooper

After entering a new area you find yourself ambushed by pirate troopers, make sure you scan one before engaging in a shootout with them.

We'll be coming back through this particular area a lot so keep an eye out whenever we mention, "the area where the pirates first ambushed you in Agon Wastes".

Scan Entry - Brizgee

Among the chaos of the ambush, you'll find a small red creature called a Brizgee; try to scan it while the pirate troopers shoot at you to get its logbook entry. Okay, back to the gunfight. Don't worry, Brizgee is a tough one, it'll still be around even if you do the scan after the fight. If you want to kill Brizgee, hit it with a missile, as this leaves it vulnerable to being shot at.

Turn right and jump over the platforms to proceed. When at the top head left, be wary of the sand waterfalls. They'll knock you back down to the start, where you'll have to jump back up all over again.

Scan Entry - Shriekbat

Fire a missile at another damaged rockface to turn it into a bridge, cross the new platform, go through the red blast door (remember to shoot it with a missile), and proceed through the cave. A gaggle of Shriekbats will fly at your face, but try not to panic so you can scan one for your logbook. After that, continue until you get to a new large area.

Scan Entry - Alpha Sandigger

When you go into the centre of the area, you become locked in a small arena, and this triggers the Alpha Sandigger to spawn. Scanning it immediatley before it changes to earn a new logbook entry.

Scan Entry - Bomb Guardian

After causing some damage, the Sandigger turns into the Bomb Guardian. That's right, it's time for another boss fight - we suggest you scan it immediately, as there's no time to once the fight gets going.

Suit Upgrade - Morph Ball Bombs

Upon defeating the Bomb Guardian, you'll be rewarded with Morph Ball Bombs! The small energy bombs you can use while in your ball form.

Exiting Boss room agon wastes
Image: Nintendo Life

To escape the arena, use a morph ball bomb on the blue gates to destroy them, and jump up the steps until you reach a room with a power bomb slot. Activate it by dropping a bomb into it, turning the room around, and taking you to a new area of the wastes containing another energy controller.

In the same room as the energy controller, there's an orange hologram; scan it for activation so that you can read amber alien text holograms. After acquiring the ability to read amber alien text, head to where you fought the pirates

Collectible - Missile Expansion

In the area where you fought the pirates, at the top of the platforms you jump across, there will be a large door with an orange translation symbol. Scan it to open the door and enter a room containing a Missile Expansion pack.

Collectible - Energy tank

Energy Tank puzzle

Head back to the beginning tunnel of the Agon Wastes, you'll come across a contraption. While morphed into a ball, drop a bomb inside so you fall into the cannon and launch into a hidden area with the Energy Tank.

Scan Entry - Paradise

Lore Entry
Image: Nintendo Life

Returning to the Agon Wastes' main area, there will be a new lore entry known as Paradise atop the rock formation where you previously made bridges. You will see an orange hologram on the main platform joining the bridges; scan it to unlock a new entry in the logbook.

We recommend running back to the Agon Wastes save point to save your progress.

From the save point, turn right and walk across the gap, jumping up and left until you see a large door with an orange hologram. Scan it to open the door and proceed. After the gate lowers, blow up the rock with a bomb and roll on through. Inside the cave, you will find the map for this area.

Heading back out and proceeding to the top of the area, return to where you initially fought the pirates and jump up the initial platform. On the left, you will see a blue gate, blast through, and proceed through the ball cannon mechanism.

Collectible - Missile Expansion

On the other side will be a dead alien, behind them will be a Missile Expansion pack.

Continuing forward through the door, you enter a large room with pirate troopers inside. Rule one in video games, if you come across enemies, you’re going the right way.

Scan Entry - Dark Pirate Trooper

Fighting Pirate Troopers

After defeating two pirate troopers, dark energy rains down, turning subsequent enemies into dark pirate troopers. Make sure you scan one to get a new log book entry. Once you deal with them, a nearby bomb slot is unlocked at the top of the ramp in the middle of the room.

Scan Entry - Light of Aether

Before you head up the ramp, on the left-hand side, behind a sand waterfall, will be a new lore entry. Scan it to learn all about the Light of Aether.

Next, go up the ramp and perform a bomb jump into the slot to activate the nearby lift. Small red devices will block the way, but you can blow them up with a ball bomb. When exiting the ball tube, do not roll off the platform; turn back into regular form and jump across the gap. Once across, transform into a ball once more to ride the next small lift. Once through, repeat your actions and be wary of the War Wasps.

Scan Entry - Pillbug

Just before jumping over the gap, stop in the middle and turn your scan visor on to look at the small enemies rolling around the large squares inside the walls. If you follow one closely enough, you can successfully scan it for the pillbug logbook entry. Completing the puzzle triggers a cutscene of a beam of light activating a Dark Aether Portal Gate.

Head back up the ramp to the portal, scan the red panel on the left-hand side of the ring, and the Dark Aether portal will be activated. A cutscene will play, sending you through the portal, and this leads you into the Dark Aether section of Agon Wastes.

The Dark Aether

Dark Portal
Image: Nintendo Life

On the planet Aether exists a darker dimension very similar to the regular lighter side of the planet. Inside this Dark Aether the geography will be different so you can access different paths which sometimes will change the layout of the area in the Light Aether accordingly. You'll find portals all over planet Aether so follow our guide and we'll walk you through each dimension.

Scan Entry - Bladepod

After exiting the portal just left to you will see a stationary creature, a Bladepod, scan it to unlock a new log book entry.

Into dark Agon Wastes
Image: Nintendo Life

In the Dark Aether, there are safe light bubbles that keep your health from declining. If you leave them, you will take damage and possibly see that game over screen. Keep an eye on your health and be aware of where the safety bubbles are.

Scan Entry - Light Beacon

Going down the ramp, you will see a small glimmer of light in the middle of the room between you and a door on your left. Scan it, and it will reveal to be a light beacon - shoot these to create a short-term safety bubble. The clock is ticking, so use them wisely.

Scan Entry - Light Crystal

Heading towards the left side of the room, towards a bomb slot on the left of it, will be a light crystal - scan it for its logbook entry. Open the look door through a morph ball bomb and proceed.

Scan Entry - Inglet

As soon as you enter the new room, you will be attacked by Inglets. Living turrets that can stick themselves to most surfaces. Scan one before destroying them to get its logbook entry. Proceed onward, shooting a missile at the red blast door. Continue through the cave, making sure to shoot light beacons to unlock safe areas as you make ground. At the end of the area, you will find a save point, and we have no doubt you will be eternally thankful for it.

Scan Entry - Nightbarb

Just above your head, next to the save point, will be a flock of Nightbarbs. Make sure you scan one for its logbook entry before moving forward.

Proceeding left through the save point, you will come to a familiar area - the dark version of the Agon Wastes. It’s mostly the same, except the air will try to kill you. Go left from the fork in the road to trigger a cutscene.

Scan Entry - Warrior Ing

Following the cutscene, you go head to head with a Warrior Ing. As intimidating as it may be, make sure you get the scan entry as soon as possible for a logbook entry. After beating these enemies, follow the trail of safety bubbles.

Scan Entry - Lightbringer

Progress through main area
Image: Nintendo Life

Turning right and looking at some platforms, jump up them to see a critter crawling on the wall. This is a Lightbringer, scanning it nets you another logbook entry. They are mobile light bubbles, so use them wisely and follow the path they bless you with.

Following the path that the Lightbringers give you, you'll come across a hole in a wall, turn into a ball, and follow the path through a contraption (we’ll come back to this later). Continue on, and you’ll come into the room where you fought the pirates in the light area of agon wastes.

Scan Entry - Jump Guardian

Returning to the area where you fought the pirate troopers, you’ll come across the Jump Guardian. Yes, it’s time for a boss fight, so make sure you scan this ghastly creature before the fight gets going for a logbook entry.

Jump Guardian
Image: Nintendo Life

Suit Upgrade - Space Jump Boots

After beating the Jump Guardian, proceed upwards, jumping using your new double jump ability. Jump close to the walls, following a path of light beacons. When you reach the red blast door, shoot it with a missile and continue onwards.

Collectible - Dark Temple Key

Continuing on the path through the blast door, you’ll arrive in a large circular room. Hug the wall and go left, keeping an eye out for any life-saving light bubbles until you see a door on your left. Inside will be your first Dark Temple Key, one of the three necessary keys to access the Dark Temple in the Agon Wastes. Collect the key, and head back the way you came to where you fought the Jump Guardian.

Double jump up towards where you found a Missile Expansion in the Light Aether. Head through the door, double jump again over the structure, and proceed into the main room where you initially arrived in Dark Agon Wastes.

Scan Entry - Light Portal

We’re pretty much done here in Dark Agon Wastes. Head up the ramp and activate the portal. Be sure to scan it before walking through to gain the Light Portal logbook entry.

Arriving back in the Light Aether Agon Wastes, you’ll be welcomed by some Pirate Troopers attacking you. After disposing of them, head towards the back left of the room, away from the portal, and proceed through the doorway that was previously blocked.

Collectible - Missile Expansion

Inside this small room, you’ll find a Missile Expansion pack trapped inside a cage; use the Bomb Slot to free it, and another handful of missiles are yours!

Scan Entry - Blueroot Tree

BlueRoot tree
Image: Nintendo Life

Heading forward, you’ll find a Blueroot Tree, give it a quick scan for its logbook entry. Turn into a ball and let yourself be carried by the sandy river, and you’ll end up in the save room you found earlier.

After you've probably saved your game, head out through the door, climb up the structure, and proceed to where you were ambushed by pirates in the area with the platforms.

Scan Entry - Cataclysm

To the pirate headquarters
Image: Nintendo Life

At the top of the room, near another sandy river, will be a statue with a gate behind it. Use the statue to jump up to a small corridor, follow it to the end, and scan the amber alien text for the Cataclysm lore entry for your logbook.

Just left of this will be the control panel for the gate behind the statue. Scan it so the gate will open, and you can proceed. Jump across the gap and enter a new room full of Pirate Troopes, a well-placed missile aimed at an explosive crate will blow them all away.

Scan Entry - Pirate Skiff

Pirate Skiff

Entering into the next area, you’ll again be ambushed by Pirate Troopers arriving on a Pirate Skiff. Quickly scan it before it flies away, then deal with those pesky pirates.

Scan Entry - Vigilance Class Turret

We’re not out of the woods yet. Upon besting the pirates, a pair of Vigilance Class Turrets will activate! Quickly scan them for their logbook entry before engaging. Stay on the move and utilise your misfiled and charged energy beam blasts to take them both down. Upon beating them, a gate on the far side of the area will become accessible to you. Head on through it, and you’ll enter the next area, the Pirates Headquarters.
