Topic: Wii-U bandwidth problem

Hello,
I've been browsing the web searching for a solution to my problem for many months now, but unfortunately couldn't find anything helpful.
In fact, it seems that, unlike other people who faced problems, in my case it is not a wifi related problem, but rather an internet one. Let me explain.
I own a aDSL router that is set as DHCP server with mac adress control and wep security.
Every device that I associated so far, any laptop, smartphone, game console (N3D, N3DS, Wii classic) could easily connect and access the net with comfortable bandwidth (801.11/n allows up to 2500 kb/s).
The fact is, my Wii-U has no problem when accessing to the router, but when outgoing to the internet : its bandwidth is only 740 kb/s instead of 2500 as for other devices. Which results in not being able to play online.
Do not misunderstand : it actually is 740 kb/s, which results in 91 kB/s, which in turn is just over the slowest old-fashioned analog 56k modem.
Each and every solution or tutorial that I found so far didn't deal with this kind of problem, but with wifi related, which doesn't apply in my case.
One more information : I own the expensive Nintendo USB to Ethernet moduel, and using it gives me as awful throughput as wifi.
Moreover : a friend of mine owns a Wii-U that connects at 2500 kb/s but, when connected to his router, mine still allows 740 kb/s (remember : 91 kB/s!).
We are going to try his console on my router and see what happens, but I'm quite sure it will fly at 2500 kb/s.
Has someone seen such behaviour so far ?
Thanks in advance,

J.-L.

What exactly have you done to get it working better? I would change the DHCP settings on the system and put them in manually, As well make sure you have set up all the port forwarding and opened the ports on the router. And it would not hurt to run the DMZ fix. If you have done all of that, it sounds like an issue with the WiiU's wifi adapter and I would call Nintendo

Sounds like the Wii U itself. Try http://support.nintendo.com for a list of possible explanations.

@ tebunker : my router is a Netgear DGN 3500. All ports are open and, anyway, all works fine with the Wii Classic (as well as the DS and the 3DS).
DMZ fix ? didn't read anything related to that so far. Will ask google - should he be my friend for once -.
@ ScroogeMcLz : I'm in touch with Nintendo support, but so far the only answer was : "Send back the console". Except that...
I asked a friend to bring his Wii-U this evening. On his box, he runs 4000 kb/s but, when connected to my router, it fell down to 740 kb/s.
So, he ran "most wanted U" on his console. "This game", he said, "loads a huge amount of data, so it will not run with not enough bandwidth". And the game ran online with no problem : smooth motion, no freeze.
Then, back to the bandwidth test (http://mire.ipadsl.net) and, once again, awful results.
So, WTF ? How can a game that needs at least 1500 kb/s manage to deal with only less than half ? And why do all other devices report 2500 kb/s ?
There must be something weird with the Wii-U IP implementation.
Any advice welcome.

Try to update your router, then keep your router settings as simple as possible.

I don't think it's a problem with your Wii U, because otherwise it wouldn't connect to the router or the internet at all.

Your friend's Wii U connected just fine, afterall.

Hello,
Well, the settings on my router are the simplest they could be.

  • gets automatically IP and DNS adress from ISP,
  • NAT active,
  • Access point active, no SSID broadcast, WEP 128, open system,
  • MAC control active',
  • No firewall rule set, Instant Messaging ports open (all default settings)
  • No personnal services set (all default settings)
  • PPPoE relay agent inactive, DoS protection and ports scanning active, no DMZ server, no answer to ping, MTU = 1492, SIP ALG active (all default settings)
  • no Dynamic DNS Service (default settings)
  • RIP version is RIP_1, RIP IN and OUT, router acts as DHCP server (all default settings)
  • No static routes, UPnP active (all default settings - behaves the same if UPnP set to inactive).
My friends console suffers the same awful bandwitdht when connected to my router, as does my console when connected to his box.
this is what puzzles me : if my console was bat on my router and good on my friend's, I could be sure it is my router.
But, my console is bad on both routers, while his one is good on his and bad on mine.
I boorowed another console at a local shop, which gives awfull results on my router as well. this is unbeliveable.
OK, OK...I just find that the problem is related to the throughput test method! (I've been going on searching for almost 2 hours while typing this)
It seems that the one I used so far does some tricky things that fools the Wii-U (but not the other devices!) : I found another one that reports far better results : 5500 kb/s (687 kB/s). Maybe a bit optimistic (WiFi!), but that could explain all!
I am very angry having been fooled for weeks and having believed that my console could be misfunctionning.
I thank everybody here who spent time trying to help me or even who read my post.
I'm sorry I made you waste time uselessly. Please accept my apologize.
    Best regards,

J.-L.
