Hi, I'm new to GC, and have started playing a few games, but I just can't get used to the control schemes! Up is down, left is right type controls. It's really frustrating!
I only wanted a GC compatible Wii to play Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine, however the controls are really offputting.
Is Luigi's Mansion 3DS better? In terms of controls?
@jay81uk Most of the world would probably agree with you, but it is worth persevering as you will get used to it.
I've been playing Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion recently and I hate inverted controls, but I've gotten used to them again enough to be able to progress in the games and enjoy them.
You guys had me at blood and semen.

Not sure what’s going on but as far as I remember there are no inverted controls on either of those games on the cube.
Sunshine is a fully 3D game so apart from camera controls (which in my experience have always been inverted for most games) nothing else is (Mario turns left and right normally).
Luigi’s mansions control scheme is a little unusual, but that it due to how the analog stick and c stick are used in conjunction. Inverted for up and down but not for the x axis.
I play many games on modern systems and that sort of camera control seems standard and if not I will always invert the y axis (up and down). Do people these days really play non-inverted?🤔

@Gamecuber If I play any game that I can think of, if the R-stick is active for camera control, I want forward to make the camera look upwards and backward to make the camera look downwards.
I'm pretty sure I've always felt that way, and modern games tend to default to that configuration.
The vertical controls in Sunshine and Mansion are what I've always considered 'inverted'/perverted.

I’ve always just thought of the camera stick as the back of my head. If I want to look up, my head tilts back (pull down) and vice versa. Of course, I played a lot of Jane’s and X-Wing as a kid too.

@HobbitGamer Exactly this, and there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with GameCube controls. I haven't played Mario Sunshine or Luigi's Mansion in quite a while, but far as I know, most games have some kind of controller configuration option, so that might offer a solution as well.
@gcunit pushing the stick forward to look up is completely counter-intuitive. Seeing as most of these controls come from 3D platformers or shooters, it makes far more sense to see the left stick as the strafe and move stick, and the right stick as the "view" or "look around" stick, which makes what @HobbitGamer said perfectly plausible.

Great way to explain it. Gold
We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.
I played a lot of x-wing in the past and all FPS shooters where you could look around in (Goldeneye, perfect dark, dark forces etc) had inverted controls on the y axis as standard.
Even using a mouse on pc I would have pulled towards me to look up and pushed away to look down.
Funnily enough I’ve always wondered if anyone ever actually did control games with the axis inverted opposite way. Now I know!
BTW we all agree that the only true way to play Donky Konga is upside down, suspended from the ceiling, right...😁

@ThanosReXXX I'm not suggesting there's no logic, sense or intuitiveness to the other way of doing, only what feels more natural to me and always has done.
But I'm pretty sure Breath of the Wild, The Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed, and pretty much every modern 3D game, has my preferred configuration as the default. Presumably the market as a whole prefers my config for some reason
Note how all the games @GameCuber refers to are about 15-20 years old.
@Gamecuber Upside down from the ceiling? No, man. While swinging from a chandelier, obviously...
As for GameCube controls: indeed. Basically, the camera stick is just airplane controls: stick forward to dive, stick backwards to climb. Totally and utterly natural and logical. People call it inverted, but I just call it native, because besides the airplane format, it is indeed also a mimicking of a person's head, so it's actually completely natural.
@jay81uk I'm honestly surprised, because you'll find these controls in thousands of games, and not just in the two that you mentioned. On a side note: I still don't get the part about your original comment about left and right also being switched around, because that is a move set dedicated to the left stick, and that's also just standard, and definitely not mirrored or anything.
Initially, I actually just thought you had a broken controller or something, but apparently, you're just having difficulties with inverted camera controls, but those can be changed in the menu or just take all of a couple of minutes to get used to. Most modern games also still have these controls, so I honestly don't understand the having an issue with it. No offense, though. Just genuinely surprised about it.

@gcunit Most modern shooters that I've played, still have native, aka anatomically correct camera movements...
3D platformers or third person games often have different or varying control schemes, but the "airplane" controls simply make the most sense in first person view. In real life, when you push your head forwards, it'll tilt towards the ground, and if you want to look up, you'll have to tilt it back, so a head movement (view/camera movement) upwards doesn't translate to a stick movement forwards. That's why so-called inverted controls are actually the most natural.
But of course, having said all that, fair enough if people are used to and/or prefer other means of control. That's probably also the reason why developers put configurable control schemes in games in the first place...

@Gamecuber Yup, even my mouse and keyboard setup had me using inverted for Unreal Tournament. It’s all about wrapping your head around how an axis works.
Pull back (back toward you) and a car throttle plate opens, the car goes forwards and the front tilts up. Let go of the gas, throttle plate pivots away from you (forward), car dives down.
It’s science. Everyone else is bad at science, @gcunit gets an F mark 😜
