I'm done with Nintendo. I'll still play their games and consoles whenever I can, but I see this as an incoming "white flag" on the console race. If Nintendo actually does well on this, then there would be no point in them making consoles anymore. The Wii U is definitely not selling, but I don't think they're interested in making their consoles as powerful (if not more powerful) than its competitors; that's already happened twice.

I can be wrong, I don't know, but I'm done defending Nintendo.

Nintendo has already stated they will continue to focus on consoles. They are combining home console and portable resources and creating a unified platform (something they should have done years ago; but better late than never) with that and now they have resources to make this other venture. A company can focus on more than one thing. Look at Sony, they do not just make video games they make other things. Apple does not only make Macs and making their more successful iDevices has not meant that they have abandoned the Mac platform.

Also, why bother make your systems as powerful as your competitor if your competitor is making huge losses trying to sell the things. Microsoft's gaming division has accumulated more than $3 billion in losses since it started, if Microsoft was not making money elsewhere I assure you the Xbox division would have been cut out years ago. Sony's entire recent existence has been surrounded with making expensive devices with better specs and sold at a loss in the hopes that sometime in the future they could make a profit. This constant push for better specs it also taking its tole on software companies, they have very little room to experiment because like movies games have become increasingly more expensive to produce but unlike movies the audience for them is much smaller, and so a game failing to break even can send shockwaves in a company. Moreover, audiences are starting to stick to well known franchises as opposed to experimenting because of the increasing expense of purchasing video games. This entire business, as it is laid out now, is becoming increasingly unsustainable.

For this reason I think it is good that Nintendo is stepping back and taking a different more unified approach to the console market as well as exploring other technology ventures. There is not point in fighting and copying the strategies of two technology Titans (especially considering how one [Sony] them is in deep financial troubles for following this strategy and the other [Microsoft] has not even made heavy losses in its console business following this strategy).

Then I just hope for the sake Nintendo that they actually do bring something other than a gimmick. I'm not interested in the "Quality of Life" product. I was never interested in Wii Fit, nor do I plan to get anything associated with it. I just want the games, but Nintendo has failed on that (except for first parties, but even they can't do it by themselves).

Nintendo, the ball is in your court now.

well the 3DS has solid third Party and Nintendo has a good relationship with eastern developers(what means more JRPGs whant means I have no complaints especially after Capcom announcing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate)

back to the actual Quality of Life topic, I don't mind maybe everyone becomes fit addicts instead of game addicts then we can look at Microsoft and Sony fanboys and say "look at these muscles you nerds!!!!!"

Oh, I'm not taking a jab at the 3DS; it's obviously doing great. It's the Wii U I'm worried about. Regarding eastern developers, that's great, but the Western market is the bigger of both markets. This is not a jab at the eastern market, but a statistical fact.

Again, I don't believe the QOL product is going to boost Nintendo sales. At least I'm not crossing my fingers about it.

look at the bright side. A lot of indie devs are more positive on Nintendo than with Sony and Microsoft.

Look I may be skeptical about this whole "Quality of life" project but if its something that Nintendo wants to do and try differently compared to Sony and Microsoft( who btw just copy whatever Nintendo does and makes it better.) then we have to appreciate it and give them confidence that it will work.

I'm with you when it comes to their stubbornness but when it comes to quality, they rarely disappoint me unlike SEGA. So just play along with this and see what happens. Even if the Wii U fails, Nintendo isn't doomed.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Guys, Nintendo is losing money, too much, in gaming. This is an HD console now, not the old wii. PS3 really hurt Sony and their developers bad, and. Nintendo is going to get hit by it too.
This QOL thing, when you look at Japan's aging population, makes total sense.

However.... If Nintendo can increase the fit population as is their goal, and they mention that they believe, BELIEVE, their strength as an entertainment company will allow them to do this right, do you know what that means? BABES. BABES EVERYWHERE. For you girls? HOT GUYS FOR GIRLS. HOT BABES FOR GUYS. FINALLY.
Fat girls become babes. Or at least better looking. I support anything that increases the # of babes without decreasing morals. It feels completely wrong to say this as if I realized it first. I got it from seanmalstrom's blog. Good business blog overall.

I think Nintendo should make a sub-brand for the Quality of Life products otherwise it'll get confusing since Nintendo's Videogames don't have a naming pattern....

I want to have your attitude, but reality is pointing the other direction. With the WB dropping the Mr. Freeze DLC from Batman: Arkham Origins, it makes me even more pessimistic about the Wii U's future. If the Wii U fails, it would be a disaster.

I'm sorry to say this, but indie developers aren't worth a dime compared to the AAA companies. They can make the best games in the world, but it needs marketing and a huge install base, in which by definition they don't. And with Nintendo's future up in the air, I'm very hesitant to do that.

^well indies actually make better games than AAA sometimes(especially with the AAA titles being mostly safe sequels nowadays) the only advantage AAA games get are the graphics(and the sales) but cheaper game developing is the future, people are less and less willing to pay much for videogames and the cost to make them should reflect this preference for cheap titles in a few years(and Quantum computers will force all digital technology industries to start all over from scratch so we might see the old arcade era all over again, this part is kind of a joke)

No argument here, but it wouldn't surprise me (I'm not saying this as a fact), that the Wii U could be the first casualty in all of this. Sad, but most likely.

Microsoft maybe but Sonys commitment says otherwise.

You say Microsoft and Don't just copy Nintendo (technically both kinect and move pre date the Wiimote on a software level.).

The problem is both are far bigger companies and are already working on Quality of Life products or are rumored to be working on them.

Attually the game Industry being a billion dollar Market, and last year being the most profitable year for the industry despite the main console sales being down says a lot.

The game industry is like the film one at this point and is too big to fail. For the majority of the world Indie or download games are okay but hold no candle to the Halos, Uncharteds, and Zeldas of the world. Indie games are getting note clout recently but it seems to be only certain indie games get really big .

If i recall correctly, 360's kinect was released after 360 came out which took a few years after the Wii was selling huge. Sony did the same thing and yet both failed to compete with the Wii regardless.

Wii U was released before the PS4 and the PS4 introduced the touchpad which works like the Wii U gamepad except that its slightly different.

If both companies are working on Quality of Life, then it just proves that they are mimicking whatever Nintendo does.

But much of the profitiable games have been from f2p stuff or mega successes from small-ish developers. Or the sane budgets of COD and Mario. As I as I know at least.

I would prefer devices for the home and portable that interact such as SIRI does for Apple with your favorite Nintendo character as a Lifestyle Personal assistant.
