Topic: What controller will you be using for Mario Wonder & other platformers?

I use the pro controller for most of my games unless I need analogue triggers or a solid d-pad then I use the xbox x/s controller via a mayflash so that would be for; tetris (and similar games), platformers and shmups for the d-pad and if there is maybe a racing game which uses the analogue triggers then for that too but for everything else I use the pro controller.

I was using an arcade stick, the Hori RAP V for shmups but honestly I just prefer and I am better on a decent d-pad like the one on the xbox x/s controller.

I have aldo tried out other more minimal controllers for platformers such as nes, snes and mega drive replicas from the likes of 8-bitdo but then ended up settling on the xbox x/s in the end. I dont actually own an xbox (other than an OG 360) but I have always used their controllers on PC.

@BubbleMan Have you looked into 3rd party options such as 8bitdo and hori or use a mayflash to allow you to use something else?

I use joycons always then I play on Switch, because I use it in portable mode only.

i mostly use my pro controller for 2d plattformers. wether i use the d-pad or the analog stick depends on the game. i play most vintage games and modern mario with the d-pad but things like donkey kong with the analog stick. when im playing in handheld mode i mostly just use the joy cons analog stick as the lack of a d-pad really doesnt go well with me. saddly most d-pad joy con mods either arent sold anymore or are hard to do diy afairs(aka modifiyng the shell and finding the parts). and most 3rd party joy cons with an analog stick dont ship hd-rumble wich is a deal breaker for me

SwitchForce

When portable it's the Joy-cons but if I play on my laptop with the Skull adapter then it's the Pro controller.

Although the pro controller d-pad likes giving false inputs which is really annoying, I just love the overall feel of it. I seriously doubt Wonder will require enough precision for the pro controller issues to cause any problems. For some games which have more finicky controls I switch to either joycons or my 8bitdo.

8bitdo is strictly better than pro controller in terms of the basic inputs, but I don't use it as much because it doesn't have vibration or the ability to turn the Switch on/off plus occasionally de-syncs from the Switch. Plus the overall heft doesn't feel quite as good as pro controller. So lots of small annoyances make me not use it as much even though it is better as an actual controller. 😆

If Nintendo made a Pro Controller 2 which was almost exactly the same but matched the best other controllers in having actual functional and consistent inputs, I feel like it would be perfect.

@Ironcore You mentioned Tetris. With the day-one Tetris 99 controls I thought it was literally impossible to play with a Pro controller-- it would just be inadvertent hard drops constantly. Now that they switched hard drop to the trigger button as one of the default configs, I actually really like the Pro controller for Tetris 99.

Eh probably my Zelda joycons.

I’m to cheap to buy new controllers, so I just use my joy cons in the grip you get with the switch.

Currently playing: Pokemon Soul Silver, Mario RPG
Enos 1:15

I'll be using the same Power A wireless controller I bought back when my Joy-Con started to drift back in 2019, which is the only thing I ever use.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

If I'm playing in docked mode, I use 8bitdo Pro 2. It's very much like the Pro Controller but with better control sticks. The only minus is that it doesn't have HD rumble, just regular rumble, but that's not a big deal.

In handheld mode I use the Hori Split Pad Pro. The buttons and sticks on the official Joycons are way too small for my fingers, so having the regular sizes ones + a D-pad on the Split Pad is a blessing. The Split Pad doesn't have rumble at all, but again, it's not a big deal, since in most games rumble is inessential. And in platformers which require very precise movements and quick reactions, like Celeste or Hollow Knight, I find the rumble to be more of a distraction than a benefit, so I turn it off anyway.

I use the xbox x/s controller for tetris 99 not the pro controller. If the game requires a d-pad then I always use the xbox controller and never the pro controller. I use a mayflash adapter. I dont know what the lag on it is but by feel is less than the pro controller or it seems that way anyway.

You can improve the d-pad Pro Controller somewhat with a little bit of electrical tape. Not too hard to do, there are videos that walk you through it. Basically you're just reducing the size of the contacts and raising the pivot slightly

It is kinda stupid that Nintendo's most current controller is the one with the worst d-pad of all the controllers I have. Really dropped the ball there. I never thought I'd see the day where I preferred the split d-pad option

My wire-only Kirby controller. No way I'm using my Joy-Cons unless I'm playing a game that requires gyroscope controls (like some of the shrines in "Breath of the Wild" and all of "Splatoon 3"). I still haven't mastered the art of physically fixing my old ones after they suffered drifting.

Does anyone know if the Gamecube controller (through adapter) would work for this??

Mostly joy-cons for my games, but I’ll probably go pro-controller on wonder

I honestly find the joy-cons pretty nice, just slap a grip on in handheld mode and it’s solid!
Joy-Con drift isn’t really an issue to me too, I’ve had 4 joycons and none have drift (yet), though I probably will get it at some point. (Honestly, DualShock4 Joystick Drift is worse then JCD for me, I’ve had THREES DS4s’ get extreme drift playing non-intense games while I’ve put hundreds of hours on my switch into games like TotK and Celeste and don’t got drift yet)

Pretty much inactive

Joy-cons. They've spoilt me on using a single rigid body controller that shackles your hands together. I never want to not be able to play a game with one hand resting on the arm of the chair while the other scratches my chin. Also, working the gyro in something like BOTW or TOTK feels so good with a joy-con. It's all in the fingers.

That's when I play docked if course, which I don't do a lot of. I do play a lot of tabletop so similar principles apply. Especially good in bed when I have the Switch propped up on the duvet while I rest my hand on one hand that is also holding a joy-con with the other resting on the bed. Can't do that with a pro controller.

Would be nice if they were more robust though.

Yes, exactly. I see a few mentions above of people using the joycon grip... I just don't get why anyone would choose to join them together when you can let your hands and arms go free.

I've never used the joycon grip. Ever since March 3rd 2017 I've either played handheld or with split joycons. I do own a few Pro Controllers for collection purposes but have never felt the need to make use of them - joycons are pretty much perfect for me, except for the lack of analogue triggers and proper D-pad, but I only tend to use the D-pad for navigating menus anyway.

Joycons FTW.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

So far the game feels great with pro controller, although the the game controls in general are both very simple and very smooth, so I suspect almost any controller would be fine
