Thanks a lot! I checked online and see what you mean!

So - do you have anything more specific about the "Nicalis games"? Any examples?? Just curious...

@TalonMan

I think they meant the launch editions. Kind of like the Cave Story launch with the keychain and soundtrack and whatnot

They come with goodies. I deleted it but I stated this...when people start getting more serious about Switch collecting they will want these games with all the goodies they come with. Some people will lose some or all the items, which will "devalue" it to some collectors...it's either all or nothing.

These items are small too, so having each little thing will be important. Those stickers sheets will need every sticker, the keychain will need to be intact and not in someone's pocket for years (which will wear it out over time).

If anyone thinks otherwise I'll be glad to hear your thoughts, but seeing as these have little items, I feel they will be sought after in a complete manner years later. I think a Tiny Barbarian will all items will fetch a higher price than just a game with box version.

Of course, this also brings us to the version of Rime that has a cloth map, which already fetches a high price. Will people also want the Mega Man Legacy Collection with the small cloth that came with it? It's little things like this that make me wonder about the prices down the road.

What about the 2 versions/covers of Has Been Heroes? Was the first edition a EB/Gamestop only print?

I tend to think that the small items won't be a big deal down the road, unless it is a completionist. I am a NES and N64 collector as well, and I am a game only kinda deal. I feel later on that is what Switch lean towards as well. But there still are NES and 64 collectors who need the box and manuals, so what do I know haha that just my preference and thoughts as a collector.

Also love this forum, because I am always buying/wondering if I have the big rare game for Switch ha

Ah - ok, yeah. That definitely makes sense and I agree!

I feel like there will be lower print runs for games of this generation in general, since buying them digitally is becoming more popular, so there's no need to print as many copies compared to 15 years ago when physical was the only option.

I'm also not sure that any current games will become nearly as valuable as NES/SNES stuff was a few years ago. These online services won't be around in 20 years, so a big chunk of these games will be impossible for nostalgic kids to revisit, or in some cases the game will be completely unplayable. This obviously affects PS4 and XBOX more than Switch, but still I feel that the collectors market won't be very big for modern systems since they'll just be a shadow of their former selves once online is killed.

I'm still not 100% convinced that buying digitally vs. physical has completely swung in one direction or the other, yet (at least, as far as "consumer preference" goes).

I'm sure if there was vast and overwhelming majority of users that preferred a "digital only" experience, publishers would quickly stop making physical releases entirely, in an effort to help bring those last remaining consumers on-board with the digital-only distribution model. Publishers would be ALL TOO HAPPY to cease physical production, because creating cartridges/discs, boxes, boxart, etc. - all cuts into their overhead, whereas a digital distribution allows them to collect almost the entire MSRP from a sale!!

And I'm not sure I agree with your second paragraph at all. One of the main reasons for buying a physical product in the first place, is to counter the exact problem you're talking about - the fact that the online servers won't be available in 20yrs or so. Granted, the type of game has to be taken into consideration (a MMO type game will likely be unplayable without "fan support" to create the necessary servers) as well as how many patches are truly needed to enable a playable game (one of the side effects of introducing rewritable storage into the console world with the XBox - enabling developers to release broken games that they can patch later, which I absolutely LOATHE and blame Microsoft for!!!) - but as far as I'm concerned, the whole reason I prefer physical is so that I CAN play a game 20yrs from now!!

I'm playing Harvest Moon: LoH right now (loving the hell out of it, mind you because I have ALWAYS loved Harvest Moon!!!!). Imagine if I had purchased it digitally - there's a very high chance that 20yrs from now (when I pull my dusty Switch out of the closet) there would be no way for me to re-download the copy I had purchased, as the server wouldn't exist... ...but since I bought it physically, I know I can just pop the cartridge in and get right back to farming!!!

I definitely agree with you about all of this!! In fact, I had originally missed out on the Wild Guns launch copy for the Switch (which came with a keychain) - so I went out and purchased a PS4 version of the game as well (which still had launch copies available), kept the keychain, and sold the PS4 copy on eBay!!

Did HBH have two covers? Or, are you referring to BoI? I honestly don't remember where I got my copy of HBH (might have, in fact, been through GameStop!), but I'm very curious about this...???

I have both as well. Bought the second version by an accident ha. After a bit of searching the Orange cover was a EB/Gamestop exclusive.

Just an added note, Gametrust the maker of Has Been Heroes is a developer that works with Gamestop/EB, making the first run, exclusive to the game store.

Here's the differences between the two:

So the orange one (which is what I have) with the sad and completely barren box interior, is the first print... Cool!! I honestly didn't even know they had done that with this one.

At least with Isaac, it was released with all kinds of fanfare and I knew I had to get the first print edition!! I don't remember HBH having any kind of announcement regarding the different covers...

@TalonMan I wasn't so much referring to digital games being impossible to reobtain as I was referring games that can't be played offline, like Overwatch, Titanfall, or Fortnite. Those are some of the biggest games of this generation, and once the servers go down, these will be completely unplayable, even if you still own them physically or digitally. Would SNES collecting be as popular today if many of its best games were unplayable or had major parts of them impossible to access anymore?

Obviously there are less Switch games that do this compared to other consoles, and stuff like Harvest Moon won't be affected, but online play is still a huge part of games like Splatoon and Mario Kart.

Well yeah, that's why I inserted the caveat about the type of game having to be taken into consideration, as well as broken, buggy, and patch-reliant releases that may have been rushed into production - both of these scenarios would obviously render the physical cartridge/disc useless... ...BUT, you're also making arguments based on your personal preference. I haven't played (nor am I interested in playing) any of those games you just listed - that doesn't make them bad games, it just means I'm not into that genre and I'm sure I'm not alone. I could make the same argument listing some of the "biggest games of the generation", that's DON'T rely on an online service - heck, BoTW alone would make it worthwhile to own a Switch 20-30 years from now!!! LOL!!! So long as you have it on cartridge, that is...

Just because an online service isn't available any longer, doesn't mean it's not worth being able to own and play a game long after the server is down. I'll give you a prime example: Red Dead Redemption.

I've been EXCEPTIONALLY slow in adopting my PS3 to my everyday gaming system - it was parked in my living room for years, until the PS4. Once the PS4 came out, that went into the living room and I was able to relocate the PS3 to my bedroom and finally play some games on it. A few months ago, I got my first chance to play RDR and in case you haven't played or didn't know, the online multi-player service is in shambles and is pretty much a broken mess... ...and it didn't matter ONE BIT!!! I loved that game, I played it for WEEKS!!! Sure, I'm pissed that I can't get some of the trophies because the online service is broken, but the core game is there for me to play - and play it, I did!!!

What happens in 10-20 years for those that bought RDR digitally, have a drive crash on their PS3, and are unable to download the game again? Guess who gets to just pop in his disc and play the game, whenever he feels like it?

Retro City Rampage for Switch the physical edition is really hard to get. Just look at amazon.ca and the cost is outrageous. Apparently they aren't making enough to satisfy demand. Also Axiom Verge for Switch the regular edition is close to impossible to find. It's currently on sale for $142.98 CAN. As for other systems Fortnite is currently going for a couple hundred dollars. Since they only pressed a limited amount it will only increase in price for rarity.

@TalonMan I'm not basing it off my personal preferences, I actually don't play any online only games either, but a PS4 that can't play Overwatch is almost as bad as a SNES that can't play Super Mario World. Even if you don't like the game, there's no denying that it's big part of the system.

I started buying N64 stuff again because I had the urge one day to play Super Mario 64 for the first time since my childhood. It brought me way back and made me want more, which led to me building up a decent collection of N64 stuff. This is one of the most common reasons people start collecting retro games. When the 120 million+ people who played Fortnite want to relive their time playing it and can't, will very many people want to become collectors? If they don't, then not many current games will become valuable down the line.

There are definitely current games that will still be fun when online is down, and there are many people who realize this, but for millions of kids today, it's all about online multiplayer.

But I'm pretty sure people would know full well they can't expect to play a game like Fortnite - just like I know, if I drag my Commodore 64 out of the closet, I can't expect to boot up Quantum Link and start visiting the chat rooms!!! (and for those too young to know what I'm talking about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Link ). But just because I can't use Quantum Link - does that mean my C64 experience is lost???

...what they may be looking at, though is Last Of Us or Uncharted or Days Gone (if it ever comes out!!). There are PLENTY of "single player" games that would justify a PS4 20yrs from now.

I don't think you can define the PS4 as a "MMO machine". Sure, it offers those types of games, but it's certainly not the only definition of the console. For every MMO you mention, I can mention 10-20 single player games...

What about the Japan exclusive Rock Man X Legacy Collection 2? Most reviews I’ve seen find the games on that collection to be the lesser ones of the series, that may lead to few sales for a title that will only be released in one country. I’m thinking about getting one to keep sealed.

Rockman X 2 is cheap on eBay too!! I bought a copy for 50 bucks last week! Can not wait!

Haven't been on in a few days. Question...Cave Story+ is or has a second cover variation. If it hasn't released I'm not sure when it does, but do you think it would be harder to come by than the first? I figured those who wanted the game already have it. Granted new Switch owners might snag it, but do you think there's a chance it could be harder to get than the original?

Also since I haven't been online in a bit does my list look up to date or what should I change? Sorry don't have a lot of time at the moment to deep dive.
