Hi! My mother in law loves Dr. Mario on her Nintendo DS. However we are having to buy a new one once a year or so. We looked at getting her a switch and the Dr. Mario game. Does she need to have WIfi constantly to play the Dr. Mario game?
Depends on if Dr. Mario is a physical chip card or a digital game. Any digital games on the switch have to have WiFi to connect, while physical cards/chips you can switch out don’t. If you’re using the Switch online I believe (someone correct me if I’m wrong XD) you have to also have WiFi in order to play.
Happy gaming!

@mcgeeaudrey14 So far, Dr. Mario is only available on the Switch with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Although, I don't know enough about playing games via NSO to know how much internet connection you need to play it.
To play any of the games offered through NSO you have to connect to the internet to play them.
Well, your Switch has to have been connected to the internet at some point in the last week (so it can verify that you have a subscription), but you don't actually have to have a constant internet connection while you're playing the games.
@mcgeeaudrey14 As mentioned above, the only Dr Mario games on Switch are part of the Switch Online service. The original NES Dr Mario is part of the standard subscription ($20 a year) and the Nintendo 64 version is included in the 'expansion' tier ($50 a year). It's up to you whether that's worth it just for Dr Mario. I'm surprised you have to buy a new DS so often, I thought they were pretty durable.
@Kermit1Pineapple@Dogorilla Evertime I try to play an NSO game it I get a message saying that I need to be connected to the internet. Doesn't matter if I play everyday or not.

Not too often because I have to use my phones Hotspot to connect to the internet. But for awhile there I was having to connect everyday to play through Breath of Fire on NSO

Huh, not sure why that is. I checked Nintendo's FAQ and it's not massively informative but it does say
'Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online can by played for up to seven days without an internet connection. If you are unable to launch Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online, then please try connecting to the internet again.'
